OK, so what term should be used? It's VERY real and very relevant (probably more so than any other time in the past half-a-century in the USA).

Are we supposed to get rid of the word and substitute it with something that would sound nicer? Maybe "fluffy" or something? Just can't get rid of a word for something that is becoming more pervasive than it has been in decades (and the word is reasonably-well understood). NATURE ABHORS A VACUUM.

A friend of Dayton shooter has been charged with lying on federal firearms forms, the Department of Justice announced at a press conference on Monday.

The man in question, Ethan Kollie, 24, allegedly bought body armor, an AR-15 accessory and a 100 round drum magazine for the shooter in May, the Department of Justice said...

FBI agents spoke with Kollie again on Aug. 8, when he told them that he had taken "hard drugs" with Betts "four or five times" weekly for a number of years. He also told the agents that he had smoked marijuana almost daily over a period of 10 years.

The FBI then sourced a copy of the ATF form that Kollie filled out to purchase the pistol that the agents saw in his home. Kollie indicated on this form that he did not use any narcotic drugs.

The FBI arrested an 18-year-old from Ohio for making online threats — including against the federal government and Planned Parenthood — and found a large cache of weapons, authorities said.

When agents raided the Boardman, Ohio, house where Justin Olsen was living they recovered 15 rifles, 10 semi-automatic pistols and roughly 10,000 rounds of ammunition, according to a criminal complaint written by FBI Special Agent Themistocles Tsarnas and seen by NBC News.

Olsen, who wrote under the name "ArmyOfChrist," was charged Monday with one count of threatening to assault a federal law enforcement officer.

"ArmyOfChrist discussed supporting mass shootings, and assault and/or targeting of Planned Parenthood," according to Tsarnas.

A college student with a reported plan to 'kill people' is found with guns in his North Carolina dorm, police say [CNN]

A North Carolina college student has been arrested and charged after authorities found two guns in his dorm room and he reportedly confessed to plans to carry out a shooting.

Paul Arnold Steber, a 19-year-old freshman at High Point University, faces two felony counts of weapons on campus or educational property and one count of making a threat of mass violence, High Point Police said. He's being held without bond for 10 days, during which time he must have a mental evaluation, police said.

Steber's attorney did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Steber, of Boston, is one of dozens of suspects arrested over mass attack threats since mass shootings this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. In the week after the shootings, the FBI got more than 38,000 tips, up from the typical 22,000 tips per week this year.

A college student in Nevada was arrested after campus police found a rifle and about 2,000 rounds of ammunition in a vehicle he drove on campus, College of Southern Nevada's president said in a statement.

Shayn Striegel, 27, was arrested Wednesday at the school's Henderson campus, a few miles southeast of Las Vegas, the public community college's spokesman, Richard Lake, said.

Campus police got a report that ammunition was seen in a vehicle parked on campus, the college's president, Federico Zaragoza, said in a statement.
Striegel told officers that he'd forgotten he had the rifle in the vehicle, the statement said.

Just to add a touch of irony, today is 1-September when new laws from the National Laboratory of Bad Government (aka the Texas Legislature) go into effect. As of today, Texans can legally bring more guns into public places like schools, churches and synagogues.
