Ouch! I thought it was just fine. Though closing with Paul McCartney? Zzzzzz. I loved the historical aspects and the British invasion touch. Mr. Bean was a scream and loved loved loved it!!!

The last time I looked at a map, the 'Isles of Wonder' didn't include Canada, Australia, or the United States.

England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales were all represented. They're the 'Isles' mentioned in the 'Isles of Wonder'.

Every four years, the country hosting does something specific to their country. London chose to focus on the Island is resides on, as it had the right to as the Olympics are being hosted there.

Get over it.

Yes, the Olympics are global, but, as both Apollo and I have said, the show was about the British Isles. Not Canada. Not Australia. Not the United States.

The Unites States has hosted the Olympics several times. You can be assured that, despite having British roots, England didn't play a part in the opening ceremonies.

I thought the ceremony was a curate's egg* and I confess I had to turn away and cringe a few times. I recognised Kenneth Branagh, JK Rowling, Dan Craig, the Queen, Mr Bean, Becks and McCartney. Did I miss any other important celebrities?

Indeed. That was the time when Britain was THE international powerhouse of ideas. It produced more geniuses (!) than any other nation!! They made the the best empire in world history.

I thought it was boring, and confusing. I didn't see any "wow" moments, or "water cooler talk" stuff. Just my opinion, and I'm not bashing anyone. Just sayin..........

I don't disagree with you. It was designed for those in the auditorium but you were watching it on tv. Somethings —like concerts, opera, parades and sex— don't translate well through the medium of TV.

The Chinese one was different but that's because it was performed by communist-automatons.

It went on too long, or at least it just seemed that way to me.

I liked the spirit and I got the point... but... ratchet. The opening and the internet portion kind of lost me.

Why, I wondered, do we have these sort of opening ceremonies at all? Why not have the athletes simply march in, plant their flags, and be greeted by the head of state and the president of the IOC? It then occured to me that it was probably primarily about raising revenue, about having a ceremony that was long enough so that there would be time for as many television commercials as possible, so that the television networks could make the profit necessary to pay for the broadcast rights that have helped fund the games ever since Los Angeles in 1984.

I'd prefer that they'd keep it that simple. That being said, the Beijing and Athens productions were at least beautiful.

I thought London was an incoherent, tedious and pretentious mess. And while it had a few moments of visual beauty, on the whole it was ugly. Of a piece with Anish Kapoor's monstrous tower, I'd add, which is worse only because it's going to be around for a while--that is until a more civilized age has the wisdom to demolish it-- whereas this ceremony, which seemed interminable while it lasted, is now but a bad memory.

But then I hate watching Mr Bean. Wouldn't it have been more inspiring and elevating to have simply watched young, beautiful, joyous and exuberant athletes? What would the ancient Greeks have thought?

I loved it! Some of you seem determined not to like it but I thought it was a wonderful celebration of Britain in the 21st century. It didn't need to be political. It was just amazing and inspiring.

And the Queen was clearly having a great time.
