I watch HBO's Looking on a regular basis. I care about what goes on. But, I wish this was a 60- rather than a 30-minute series. (I'm really honing in on the time frame. It could have been varied between 45 to 60 minutes, episode after episode.) Reason is that Looking has more potential than what it delivers. The characters are worth exploring. I find Murray Bartlett's Dom the most interesting of the central characters. But, I want more from a character like Richie (who, as played by Raul Castillo, I think is the overall most mature with depth). And, given that Patrick (Jonathan Groff) is with a man attached to another (referring to Russell Tovey's Kevin having a boyfriend while having sex and a relationship with Patrick), I don't want to be denied the real presence of that man who has been cheated on. (Maybe Looking didn't want us to really like that character…as it would risk our supposed need to love Patrick.) From episode to episode, the tone of Looking is that the characters are drifting through life as if life will come to them. (The getaway episodes! The recent was with a supporting character having lost one's father. That is an example of a change—or, in that case, a death—that came into their lives.) I would like to see a little less drifting to make way for adjusted, sharp focus. (Dom may never get that restaurant. But, I think when all is said and done he will. I want to see him growing even more.)

Rather, they mine situational comedy and dramatic tension out of their characters' specific identities and backgrounds; it's that deeply-personal approach to storytelling that makes the show feel so richly intimate.
By providing such a distinct insider's point-of-view, "Looking" has created characters and stories that feel quite new, and thus quite important, to the television landscape. In that way, it's a part of a fantastic trend happening in TV right now: the explosion of stories about marginalized communities, told by members of those communities who don't soften their edges or broaden their content.

Tonight's episode (3-22, Looking for Home) was excellent. It raised a lot of relationship issues: trust, monogamy, insecurities and commitment. Patrick is loaded with all those insecurities, like many of us all. However, he really pissed me off tonight, because he was so fearful of everything that COULD go wrong. Man up Patrick, make the commitment to Kevin. Stop being a pussy. Does Patrick love Richie, can he really love anyone?
