Attention Malaysia Airlines 777 missing between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing; 239 on board

I have spent a few days watching people present ID cards to me. Some presented two inconsistent cards. We didn't know first names from surnames. And phonetic spelling is NOT reliable if you 拼音是完全不可靠的 if you don't know the language 발음 철자가 완전히 신뢰할 ધ્વન્યાત્મક જોડણી સંપૂર્ણપણે અવિશ્વસનીય છે phonetic spelling is NOT reliable ay ganap na hindi kapani-paniwala if you don't know the language, for example—

Hse

So the basic premise is, if you're ignorant of someone's native language, spoken, written, or othewise, your basic instinct is prejudice and treat them like something stuck on your shoe you stepped in?

The part that intrigues me....

There was supposedly amongst the nationalities on board, 1 Italian and 1 Austrian....

....but then their respective countries' foreign offices/embassies confirmed they were alive, at home, and safe - it turned out that both these people had their passports stolen while on holiday in the region, last August - whether this was in two separate incidents or whether they travelled as a couple, I've no idea....

....so two people were on board that flight using stolen passports.

If presumably they were local criminals or scammers, Malaysian or Chinese (or anywhere around there) wouldn't border security and airport authorities have noticed something VERY odd about two Asian people (even with a fake photo inserted) travelling under an Italian and Austrian passport with an Italian and Austrian name?

Malaysian Airlines did not customarily check passports against the Interpol database.

Additionally, no inquiry was made by Malaysia Airlines to determine if any passengers on the flight were traveling on stolen passports, he said. Many airlines do not check the database, he said.

Obviously, the plane has crashed. As to how and why is a mystery.

My thoughts are with the families.

Well, it's almost 10 PM there and so far nothing is known to have been found today.

From theguardian.com live blog:

No wreckage has been found of the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, 44 hours after the plane disappeared from radar screens while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. A massive search and rescue mission is underway in the South China Sea.

• Interpol confirmed that at least two stolen passports were used to board the flight at Kuala Lumpar’s international airport.

• Immigration officers are being questioned as part of the investigation into the security lapse that failed to spot stolen passports.

WRT the two faked passports, these are the people using them together

Maybe its my faulty gaydar, but, maybe these two were an item and fleeing Iran?

I'm beginning to wonder if the plane even took off. I thought air traffic was more closely monitored than it seems.

How can a plane simply disappear? Quite easily, it seems:

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - In an age when people assume that any bit of information is just a click away, the thought that a jetliner could simply disappear over the ocean for more than two days is staggering. But Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is hardly the first reminder of how big the seas are, and of how agonizing it can be to try to find something lost in them.

It took two years to find the main wreckage of an Air France jet that plunged into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009. Closer to the area between Malaysia and Vietnam where Saturday's flight vanished, it took a week for debris from an Indonesian jet to be spotted in 2007. Today, the mostly intact fuselage still sits on the bottom of the ocean.

"The world is a big place," said Michael Smart, professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Queensland in Australia. "If it happens to come down in the middle of the ocean and it's not near a shipping lane or something, who knows how long it could take them to find?"

Amid the confusion, officials involved in the search say the Malaysian jet may have made a U-turn, adding one more level of uncertainty to the effort to find it. They even suggest that the plane could be hundreds of kilometres from where it was last detected.

Aviation experts say the plane will be found — eventually. Since the start of the jet age in 1958, only a handful of jets have gone missing and not been found.

From what they're reporting today, Interpol and the intelligence agencies are discounting them now.

It's seeming increasingly likely that these two had nothing at all to do with what happened, and they had no involvement whatsoever with the plane's disappearance.

IF they were a gay couple it's a profoundly tragic story - to manage to escape the homophobic oppression of Iran, and to be granted possible asylum in a European country from religious persecution, to start a new life together........ only to then die at the final moment in a plane crash on the journey there. :(

However, from what I heard yesterday, they were bound for different destinations in different countries, so I suspect they might not have been a couple after all. They were booked straight through China and on to Amsterdam, Netherlands - but from there one of them was flying on to Frankfurt, Germany, while the other was flying on to Copenhagen, Denmark.

On the search for the plane itself, it's now thought it could have gone down in the Malacca Strait - if so, they might have been looking in the wrong place. #-o

As I understand it the Malacca Straits theory is coming from the Malaysian military, which is now reporting tracking it at least that far (according to theguardian.com live blog). Why haven't we had this information before now?

So how long has this been "known?"

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Reuters) - Malaysia's military believes a jetliner missing for almost four days turned and flew hundreds of kilometres to the west after it last made contact with civilian air traffic control off the country's east coast, a senior officer told Reuters on Tuesday.
....
"It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait," the senior military officer, who has been briefed on investigations, told Reuters.

I am equally as clueless as what happened to the plane even though I am in Malaysia. Many press conferences have been held but nothing concrete has been shared.

You have to remember the laws of physics. Even if the plane disintegrated at 35,000 feet, it would not fall straight down. It would continue in the direction the plane was flying, and since nobody really knows in which direction it was flying, it could be many, many miles away in any direction from its last known position.

Murdoch's evil empire started screeching terrorist attack about an hour after the random bit of door was found, that turned out not to be door at all. I always wonder why they don't just build planes out the same stuff as they build the black box. Those things survive pretty much anything.

Australian media are now backing away from the "terrorists are blowing up planes" hysteria and saying that people fleeing Iran often go through Malaysia to China and the move on from their to wherever they're trying to seek asylum.

Because of the strength and weakness of materials.
All planes should be made of water !!!
