Mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando Florida: Political Discussion [SPLIT]

May 3, 1994

To Members of the U.S. House of Representatives:

We are writing to urge your support for a ban on the domestic manufacture of military-style assault weapons. This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety. Although assualt weapons account for less than 1% of the guns in circulation, they account for nearly 10% of the guns traced to crime.

Every major law enforcement organization in America and dozens of leading labor, medical, religious, civil rights and civic groups support such a ban. Most importantly, poll after poll shows that the American public overwhelmingly support a ban on assault weapons. A 1993 CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll found that 77% of Americans support a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of semi-automatic assault guns, such as the AK-47.

The 1989 import ban resulted in an impressive 40% drop in imported assault weapons traced to crime between 1989 and 1991, but the killing continues. Last year, a killer armed with two TEC9s killed eight people at a San Francisco law firm and wounded several others. During the past five years, more than 40 law enforcement officers have been killed or wounded in the line of duty by an assault weapon.

While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons.

Sincerely,

Gerald R. Ford

Jimmy Carter

Ronald Reagan

They forgot to write "Or imported military-style assault weapons"

NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

and other countless killings.
When is the NRA going to get sued by class action and make it bankrupted ??

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

When it no longer owns all the politicians.

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

I noticed there were class actions against the tobacco industry, the medical industry,
the car industry ... etc. Now its time to poke the gun industry i would have thought.

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

They are in part responsible for all the mass shootings. They don't want to do anything to help prevent anything, they want to sell more guns and prevent any studies being done when it comes to gun violence.

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

Of all the people got killed,
How many billions of dollars they have to pay to the victims ...?
Where are the lawyers who can do no win no pay thing ?

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

I believe the NRA, as well as Firearm manufacturers, are exempt from lawsuits.

Not the NRA which is the lobbying arm of US gun manufacturers.

But you are correct, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act provides industry exemption to US gun manufacturers for any crimes committed with the products they manufacture, market and sell.

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

I'm sure smart lawyers who can come up with something to sue them for billions
because there are evidence that they are responsible.

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

I assume NRA does not have a huge amount of money or assets in any event, Manufacturers are liable if they produce a defective gun. But the are not liabe for bad acts comitted with their guns. Knives can be used to kill people. Should they be liable? Hammers, acrewdrivers, axes, drain cleaner, rat poison. Laws should be made by Congress in a democracy, not by nonelecred judges.
If guns are responsible, so is our official policy of divisiveness and multiculturalism.

Well,
I've heard they are "very powerful" and bad, therefore why not bankrupt them out of business ?
And NRA is longer exist.

NRA is just an organization. It is demonized by liberals and made to seem like the devil incarnate, but it has far less power than, say, the Anti Christian Litigation Union. NRA collects dues, but probably does not have a lot of savings or assets. It would be bankrupted by a large judgment but the officers and members would probably just start a new organization.

It is not easy to start a new organization.
Also the new organization would be so easily detected and to bankrupt again and again ....
Lets see how many organizations they can come up with.

Re: Florida Gay Club PULSE has been attacked with injuries, and possible hostage situation.

I have even read comments by LGBT people who are now claiming that this was not Jihad or this guy in Orlando was not with ISIS when he was, and so was the guy that wanted to attack the L.A. LGBT pride parade.

It wasn't jihad. It was not an ISIS cell. This was a severly confused, closeted Muslim with mental health issues who was brought up to believe beinbg gay was wrong. He was a loner. He only aligned himself to ISIS to justify his extreme actions. ISIS of course will tag an to anything they think chimes with their extreme views

The founders did not yet realize that they needed to defend against liberals as well as wild animals and attacking Native Americans.

It would be less typing to just put them all in the category of "subhumans." Wild animals, wild Injuns, blacks, immigrant spics, gays, etc. All the things Americans need guns to defend themselves against.

Re: NRA is responsible for the Orlando killings

Just to make sure we're operating in the fact-based world:

During the 2014 election cycle, gun rights advocates gave parties, candidates and outside spending groups nine times more than their opponents ($3.7 million versus $423,750) and spent nearly seven more times on lobbying ($27.3 million versus $4.2 million).
Some of the major gun-rights advocacy groups include the National Rifle Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation and National Association for Gun Rights. In 2015, these groups spent a total of $8.8 million lobbying in Washington, in large part to make sure that the spate of mass shootings didn't bring about more restrictions on individuals' ability to buy, carry and use firearms.
