I respeond with mine, describing myself as "mixed", and asking him for a face pic.

He replies back, "mixed with what", as if he's only willing to send his face pic if I'm of the "right" mixture -- you know, one that doesn't include any black or Asian ancestry.

I would have put my racial background in my ad, but that's just me. I find it speeds things up in the sorting process.

I don't know what conclusions you could draw from the question "mixed with what?" It could have just been a clumsily asked question. Maybe he could be looking for your "mix", but that's moot now since you assumed the worst. Personally, I find it better to be accurate in describing racial background, rather than using vague terms like "mixed".

Well, that 10 minutes was probably the most I've ever watched of 'Jerry Springer' in my life.... Seriously, why on earth do Americans have this propensity for amateur theatre? It is all sooooooo contrived, artificial, and staged. If they are so committed to playing for an audience, then they should just join an acting class or dramatics group, hone their skills, read the classics, get educated, and perform some serious acting at a proper stage and venue. At least they would learn something, expand their horizons, and deliver something with a bit more meaning and class.

I am not going to contribute to this thread too much other than to say, (a) that the internet is hardly conclusive evidence of anything, and (b) an experiment in Texas is hardly indicative of the wider United States.

While I have plenty of friends of color, whom I admire and respect, I just don't seek them out as romantic partners. There are tons of great looking black men and other men out there for you. Why not just seek another black guy or Asian for that matter? I have had a few Asian friends who say with their own mouths, that they will only date whites or Asians but it's not ok to date blacks of Hispanics. So every groupd has prejudices. That is life.

Well, prejudice is a pretty big part of life, so in that way he is right. It's something everyone has to live with, even white hetero people. Not saying prejudice is a good thing, cause it isn't. But it's part of life as one of the shittier things.

Not all of it is prejudice either I'm sure, even though quite a lot is. I mean, you can't help it if a thing turns you off, right? Like with me... uhm... well, any other kind of physical trait? I hate threads like these, not because the topic isn't important but because they tend to lack perspective and quality information and also tend to reflect personal gripes.

Let's begin with the obvious. Each person is free to love and desire who they want. If that choice is in part related to race that is ok because race does factor into appearance. It is simply wrong to suggest that a person is racist or bigoted because of that preference. Its not like hiring someone, which should be a colorless process. For me, I dislike muscular guys and if I wrote a personal ad I would write "thin only" or "no body builders." That might offend some people but its a shorthand way of getting more of what I like. Admittedly, race is a trickier subject, but one should not take offense to someone else's preference.

What is often missing in this discussion is that there are far more same-race couplings than mixed couplings, but what we often get here at JUB is only a discussion of mixed couplings. And that is in part because someone like the thread author has a preference for another race and is getting rejected. Well, statistically that is what one would expect. But let's say my friend Patrick who is African-American authored the thread. His experience would be completely different. He is in his mid 20's and dates mostly other AA's even though he attended college in New Hampshire where there were very few AA's. He has been in a long term relationship and has never ever complained about racial issues in dating. What is ironic, however, is that he probably would have no problem dating someone of another race. Whenever we go out to a club whites are just as likely to cruise or approach him as anyone else. Being smart, charming, handsome and 6'3" seems way more important than his race.

That said, there is real racism in the gay community as in the general community and it goes in all directions. But ultimately it comes down to what kind of person you are. If you are insecure, self-hating, paranoid, or maybe just out of shape you are going to be less attractive to others regardless of your race. But please don't try to put all people of color in the boat with you. Many of us are quite happy with our choices and options and don't depend on the media to tell us whether we are attractive.

We are talking about America, where there is still a white majority, where there is a history of racism, and where the media for eternity has portrayed caucasians as more attractive and desirable while casting minorities as less desirable. If anything we should be surprised that race relations are as good as they are.

As for profiles that express a non-white preference I suggest you visit sites that cater to minorities. Its no different than the videos you would expect to see on BET versus the country music channel.
