So here we are the start of another season and while most have a very low expectations as to how well the team plays I on the other hand have plenty to share with everyone. Thing is ya never know…ya just don’t. What we have is a scrappy team many of whom I know personally who are excited and optimistic as anyone can be or expect. They are going out there with the mind set of winning, they have no interest in proving the critics wrong but to prove to themselves and the fans they can surprise and have a great year. They are scrappy, talented, determined and full of enthusiasm, they have each other’s backs get along like a family of brothers who really like and support each other. While I cannot promise you a winning season, what I can promise is that you will see is hard working tuff team that will play hard and exciting baseball.

Well we need to start the season off with a bang and so we did.
Sure was a fun opening game I never had a doubt they would win it is something they have done something like 75% of the time
Jonathon Niese was so calm and cool just went out there knew what he had to do and got it done no pressure of being put in Johan’s spot, none at all, Loved the way he had his cutter working sorta made up for his so so curveball. I hope you picked up on how sharp a break on the pitch better than I have ever seen. He threw 16 of 20 for strikes and allowed only one base runner which came as a result of hitting the player. Another thrilling moment for me was to see Scott Rice, after spending almost 15 years in the minors a true success story if ever there is one. Hope to see more of him very soon he is one to watch.

All we heard from the press and Alderson himself was WHAT OUTFIELD? Well Cowgill and Buck showed em a bit of what we have. Cowgill became the first Met to hit a grand slam in his first game with the team and Marlon Byrd gave us a pair of singles in his first Mets home, another new kid on the block John Buck had an RBI single. Buck was very impressive behind the plate I loved how he called that game. I was concerned about how the new catching staff would work with our pitchers and so far so god. You had to notice that Niese hardly ever if ever shrugged off any of Bucks pitch selections, hope you noticed that. How great was it to see Niese in the dugout pleading his case to Collins to stay in the game just one more inning and more importantly seeing Terry grant him the chance, and Jon did not disappoint Collins with the next two batters. I love that Collins had the confidence in Niese to let him go back out there. Of course with a nine run lead it was easy for him to do.

But back to the press how quick were they to jump all over Ike Davis for going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, I actually heard a few OH OH’s is Ike in trouble? Good Grief it was his first game, calm the fuck down don’t be so fast to tear him down. If they knew anything about Ike they would know that it is not uncommon for Ike to have a game like that on the first day in fact he even joked and said. “The streak continues,” Ike was just swinging too hard, nerves maybe who knows but the Ike Man will be fine.

Daniel Murphy had a happy birthday opener on his birthday. Even thou he barely played this spring looked smooth with two hits taking eight swings and made contact on every one and handling six plays in the field beautifully. Just so ya know Murph is the second Met to drive in a run in a season gotten a hit on Opening Day. Gary Carter was the first.

Shaun Marcum not doing so well he had some neck pain and did not pitch in a scheduled simulated game Tuesday in St. Lucie, so what that means is he will be unable to be activated from the disabled list to make Sunday's start, he was to be our fifth starter. Dono yet who will pitch but could be Aaron Laffey at least I imagine he is the most probable with Collin McHugh also a possibility cause unlike Laffey Collin is already on the 40-man roster and if the Mets go with Laffey, they can create space on the 40-man roster by moving Johan Santana to the 60-day disabled list. Expect a decision by tonight

Game tonight with the very exciting Matt Harvey making his first start of the year. If/when he wins tonight it will be his first at Citi, he went 3-5 last season

I think this would be more interesting if you posted who you think are the top 5 hottest Mets this season---

No worries I sorta knew that, it's just that we don't go there here ;)
And um, as a Yankee fan your the one who needs luck

Hey to sonny and all Mets fans! Great win on Monday( talked about it in the other thread)

Look forward to a great Mets season of growth and optimism about the future as well as the seeds being planted right now in
young players to look forward to this year...Matt Harvey's first full season....Zach Wheeler sometime by the All Star Break... Travis D'Arnaud along with Wheeler and a number of others knocking at the door soon!:D

Great win by the Mets....tremendous effort by Matt Harvey. Went seven innings, allowing only one hit and struck out ten...was overpowering at times and had all his pitches working. Some bigtime home run power too as Lucas Duda blasted a two run shot in the second, John Buck ripped a solo one in the fourth and Ike Davis slammed a two run shot in the fifth inning as the Mets blasted San Diego 8-4 to start the season at 2-0.

The "Boy of Winter" provided another top notch win last nite with a sensational performance by Matt Harvey. His pitching was off the charts. BIg bats supplied by Duda, Ike, and Buck with 2 run blasts. It's nice to see this type of baseball from the Mets, it went missing after the All Star break last year. Hopefully, we can continue forward with similar games throughout the season. Looks like Aaron Laffey will take Marcum's spot in the rotation next week. Can we say SWEEP, Let's go Mets!!

Oh my gosh how exciting was it to watch Matt Harvey last night, dominant, confident and just plain filthy with 10 strikeouts, he threw 94 pitches, 63 for strikes, and hit 98 mph on the radar gun. He dominated with his fastball, and most impressive was when he made that adjustment half way thru the game and his secondary pitches dominated the Padres as well. An ace is born, and we are in for some great pitching from him in 2013. I noticed he started using that change he had been workin on and it was very effective he has mastered that pitch beautifully not that In had any doubt if he would nice to see him toss that pitch last night. Things got a little sticky after Matt left the game and we went to the pen with Greg Burke and Josh Edgin but it was Latroy Hawkins who really caused some concern giving up three runs but it was our new closer Bobby Parnell who saved the day 1-2-3. Ya have to love our new closer.Francisco still has tingling or some freakin thing in his arm so he is not ready to pitch. Its ok grandma take all the time ya need we will be fine with Bobby...|

Buck once again showed how well he is going to work with the new younger pitchers just as he did with Niese. I think John understands that sometimes Harvey likes to rush his pitches and Buck was able to set the tone slowing Harvey down when needed. I am lovin what I see from Buck.

The Dude continues to improve he’s been patient and selective, and I hope you noticed especially last night how he took advantage of every hittable pitch he saw. Duda has now reached based five times over the first two games of the season. The Dude is here. Of course we were all happy to see Ike Davis break out demolished a flat fastball to the Shea Bridge with a 2 run rocket

Today Dillon Gee returns to the mound for the first time since July 2012, Gee had emergency surgery last year to repair a damaged and obstructed artery in his shoulder after his pitching arm went numb. We are all expecting Dillon to pick up today where he left off. My only concern is the cold Temps even thou the surgery he had restored the feeling in his pitching hand that cold may affect him more than normal. He is taking nitroglycerin tablets which will help expand his blood vessels when the cold weather starts impacting his ability to feel the baseball and he thinks he will be fine.

Lineup for today’s game Collin Cowgill, cf Justin Turner, 2b David Wright, 3b Ike Davis, 1b Marlon Byrd, rf
Lucas Duda, lf John Buck, c Ruben Tejada, ss and Dillon Gee on the mound. Murph gets the day off Collins just wanting to give Turner some playing time at second. Jordany Valdespin also will get a start this weekend not sure where yet

Shawn Marcum is due to be examined in New York today yesterday he still had significant discomfort running from his shoulder up through his neck. We are hoping for only good news for Shawn.

If you are anything like me you are interested in what is going on with our Affiliates which start today
In case you are interested I thought I would post the lineups in AA and AAA

AAA LAS VEGAS 51s

Not so great today as Mets lose 2-1 to the Padres. Dillon Gee was very good over six innings plus allowing only one run but other than John Buck's two hits, including his second homer, and Justin Turner's three hits Mets did absolutely NOTHING at the plate. Too many strikeouts in the heart of the order....DWright and Lucas Duda three times and Ike Davis and Marlon Byrd twice. At least we won the opening season series...can't go 162-0!

All in all I thought Dillon Gee had a pretty good start last night, I had hoped he would pick up where he left off last year. He tossed six and one-third innings with one run and three hits his velocity was down a tad from last year, looked like just under 90, and his control was not always there, and the sharpness of his pitchers needs tom improve. During spring training he struggled a bit with his release point and command but that defiantly improved, it was a very encouraging start. Very important is that he felt healthy.
Yesterday I suggested that the cold weather might affect his pitching but Dillon said the circulation in his hand was not affected by the cold weather.
Not much offense courtesy of great pitching from Padres pitcher but that is going to happen to all teams all year its baseball and sometimes when you come up against really good pitching you lose games no worries by me, so we settle for a series
The exception was Justin Turner who Terry Collins gave a chance to play yesterday, JT answered the call by going 3-4. If you wondered why Turner had a different walk up song for each at bat it was cause he has not yet made up his mind which one to use this year. A lot of other players are stickin with what they have used from the past, Murphy will stay with Dropkick’s “I'm Shipping up To Boston” and Ike will keep The Stones “Start Me Up”. Suggestions to J T for a new song have come from his grandmother and Jeff Wilpons granddaughter but I would not be surprised to see him stick with "Call Me Maybe." JT jokingly credits the Carly Rae Jensen song, which he has been using since last May, for the spike in his batting average.;). Justin is just havin a little fun with all this till he settles on a song or two.

Shaun Marcum was examined in New York, underwent an MRI that revealed inflamed nerves in his neck, Marcum was treated with what they called trigger-point injections which should help him recover. He’s back in Port St. Lucie, and rest for at least two days. Marcum has not pitched in a game since mid March so even if his neck and shoulder pain goes away it would take some time to get ready for a major league game. Looking like Aaron Laffey will be promoted from AAA Las Vegas on Sunday to take Marcum's rotation spot and Darin Gorski will go from AA Binghamton to Las Vegas to fill Laffey's rotation spot.

Next up the Marlins who are kind of a mess now they have lost all three of their games scoring only one run so far this season. After that we go to Philly another team that is a shell of their former self. We should be able to at least win both of those series maybe even sweep one

Tonight Jeremy Hefner will be on the mound for us I am looking forward to see Jeremy and what he can bring us. The rest of the lineup will be: Valdespin, Murphy, Wright, Davis, Byrd, Duda, Buck, Tejada, and Hefner

New blue jerseys tonight

Yesterday was a good win following the weak effort in support of Hefner's nice start on Friday. The Mets were pretty sloppy and seemed a little unfocused Friday nite. Yesterday, even though Tejada still has a case of the yips, turned out much better, in large part to the indispensible Mr John Buck. The whole lineup contributed, but Buck came through each time with men on base. DWright had 3 hits, Murph a big triple, Ike, Cowgill, Capt Kirk, etc. Jon Niese pitched effectively and held the fort until the offense could really put it in gear. Have to hope Laffey comes up with a good effort today, as the Mets seek to take the series. Let's Go Mets!!

Yep, have to agree with syam's take about how important John Buck has been to the lineup, with a two run double and two run scoring sacrifice flies in his times at bat with runners on base. Collin Cowgill delivered a home run off the bench and DWright, Daniel Murphy, and Mike Baxter helped generate the offense, Ike Davis had a solid day at the plate as well in the Met's 7-3 victory over the Miami Marlins. Jon Niese was very effective allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings, but was sabotaged by a little sloppiness in the seventh with the relief and some defensive miscue, but with Buck and Cowgill adding on after that the Mets took care of business to seal the victory.

Sad to see what's happening with Dickey but not a shock either. You can't let one career year blind you to the fact he's getting older and the fact that when he did face AL teams last year,he got clobbered.

Great win for the Mets yesterday, one of those "team wins" that is essential to a winning organization culture. Mets came back from a 3-1 deficit and win in the ninth 4-3. Aaron Laffey struggled in less than five innings but the bullpen was tremendous. Something that I'm sure warms the cockles of sonny's heart was seeing Daniel Murphy pounding his second homer already of the year and even with such a shortened spring training seeing Murph on the ball and driving it much more than last year. And after Ruben Tejada got plunked seeing his buddy Kirk Nieuwenhuis looking so disciplined at bat and lashing a ball to left that with his hustle he made into a double, and exuberantly scoring the winning run when Marlon Byrd against a drawn in infield, slapped a ball down the third base line. Seeing David Wright jumping out of the dugout leading the boys on the field to celebrate with Tejada, Kirk and Byrd was so nice. I was so jazzed I was jumping!!!!!!!!

Marvelous win by the Mets Sunday! Was nice to see this outcome in our favor, all too often in the past, it's been the other way around. Beautiful work by the bullpen shutting down the FISH over the last five innnings. Some big hits by Murph (HR), Capt Kirk, and of course Marlon Byrd. Great base running by Tejada and Kirk in the ninth. Was very surprising to see the Marlins play the infield in with Byrd at the plate, but will take the money and run. Jose Fernandez was awesome for the Marlins, showing a lot of poise for a 20 yr old. We'll be seeing more of him over the years. Mets on to Philly with Matt Harvey against Roy Halliday, should be fun. Lets go Mets!!

Been away a couple of days wanna thank you guys for keeping the thread alive.

Sooo how great was that 9th yesterday I mean come on that was fun or as Syam called it "Marvelous" :D with The Mets winning their first walk-off game of the year thanks to a two-run RBI single by Marlon Byrd. It all started with Ruben Tejada gettin hit by a pitch and then the little devil went first-to-third on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis' single, Rubin remembered that Juan Pierre's has a weak arm and took full advantage if it which then allowed Nieuwenhuis to take second, it was at that point I think the Marlins were “huh What just happened”. But wait it got better when for some crazy reason Marlins manager decided to bring the infield in for Byrd, seriously, What was he thinking, did anyone tell him it was a one run game and a base hit wins it for us? I mean just what did he think Byrd was gonna do there? Amazing! So then Byrd hits that ground ball down the third base line and that’s when Gary Cohen (ya gotta love him) went nutz “Here comes Tejada, here comes Nieuwenhuis and the Mets win it” such excitement in his voice as only Gary can it just made the whole thing that much more exciting I mean if your blood wasn’t pumpin after that call check your pulse ;) But getting back to Rubin he has been struggling at short committed four errors in the first five games of the season, dono what is going on there but yesterday he won back some of our love with that great base running He has continued his successful 3-2 count hits I counted five 3-2 counts where he reached base three times, including twice yesterday. Rubin really needed that yesterday he has been getting the support of all his teammates thru his troubles giving him the love and support. You may have seen Murphy who when he got back to the dugout after that win went up to “Ruby Tuesday“(that what Murph calls Rubin”) and gave him a that-a boy hug. But that’s what those guys do support and love one other, the brothers ya see. Murphy who has shown impressive power to the opposite field and up the middle tripling to center field on Saturday and homering yesterday you should know that homer traveled the same trajectory as the triple but that time it went over the wall

Aaron Laffey had a rough time of it allowing 10 hits just over 4 innings he seemed to run of gas rather early but still Terry Collins said that Aaron would get another start although it could be delayed till we need a fifth starter and because we have Thursday off the Mets can delay using their fifth starter until April 16. Still it was good he got a chance to get stretched out, part of his getting tired ya have to think is it was the first time he ever threw over 80 pitches this year and he is after all as we say yesterday a contact guy, so there will be hits, ya just hope not just so many :(.He did throw strikes problem was he got pounded yesterday with his fastball which I though was so-so although he did threw a lot of em over the middle of the plate and ya have to say he had some pretty nifty movement on his sinker and slider, funny he did not use those pitches much. I have to say I was interested in seeing how Laffey took total control of calling the game even thou Recker sometimes showed better pitch choices only to have Aaron shrug him off and make poor pitch choices. I hope Collins teams him up with Buck next time out and Laffey is smart enough to let John call the game. We shall see.

I had concerns for our bull pen the first couple of games but Burke, Edgin, Atchison, Hawkins and Scott Rice limited the Marlins to just three hits. Atchisonj and Parnell are both looking really good so far.

I have to give credit to that new kid on the Marlins staff Jose Fernandez who totally lived up to the hype. He made us look bad not only sending the first of our guys back to the bench but strike out eight in only five innings. His fastball was flirting with 95 mph and he was throwing all his pitches for strikes, and don’t get me started on that killer curve.:=D:

Also good to see Nieuwenhuis bat come to life yesterday, we know “Newsies” tremendous defense out there in center but we need his bat to give us more hopefully that will start now.

Tonight we start a three game series in Philly with Harvey facing Halladay ought to be a great game can’t wait to see Matt out there again he is so much fun to watch. The game will be on SNY stating at 7:10 but KB has Terry Collins on the 6 o’clock show before the game to sort thru the good and bad of week 1.

A thorough trouncing of the Phillies and Roy Halliday last nite. Roy didn't look like himself at all. Matt Harvey was very good again, with another solid 7 innings. John Buck, with another huge 3 run homer, and most of the rest of the lineup contributed. Murphy continues hot, DWright with a couple of hits, and Reuben Tejada with a big 2 RBI single. It's fun watching this kind of baseball. Let's hope it can continue as the season progresses. Let's go Mets!!

Syam, you said it, we may not win a championship but we are gonnna have a blast watching them this year.

Even when Harvey doesn’t have his best stuff he was better than most pitchers when they do. That changeup is still impressive he threw some nice braking balls, but he wasn’t at his sharpest with that fast ball falling behind too many batters, when he did not have his fastball he went to his slider a lot which was effective especially when he need to make an off sped pitch where he got a lot of swings and misses till he was able to get that fastball goin, he did eventually in the middle of the game, still he managed to show no fear of Howard moving him back off the plate and getting him out with that high fastball, Howard who? Bring him on!.
You can hear more from Harvey tonight on the pregame when KB speaks with him.

As to Murph we all know, Daniel included, how important spring training is but when you are as hardworking dedicated and as Murphy is the result is batting .308 a week into the season after having had almost no spring training. I have heard many times Daniel talk about hitting; it is a science with him often headin back to the video room after an at bat to study and evaluate it and when the at bat did not deliver figuring out why.

Looks like our offense will give us more than most thought, with Wright, Murphy, Buck, Byrd and Cowgill, and still to get it going Davis, Duda and Nieuwenhuis. Our starters have been terrific but whoda thought we would have an effective pen again as well; well it is shaping up nicely thank you very much.

Tejada did it again last night; he owns that 3-2 count

Out in Vegas AAA Jeurys Familia has been named closer and yesterday he picked up his first save in the Vegas 4-3 win. Over the years I had made a lot of trips to Buffalo and reported how things were going with our AAA team but this year with them out in Vegas it will be difficult to make many trips. I will however be there when Matt den Dekker returns from his injury, Dekker is expected to go to Vegas in early June and if he does I will head out there to see how he is doing. The cast on his wrist comes off at the end of this month and he he should be able to resume baseball activity in late May.

Tonight it’s Gee on the mound

I know great pitchers decline as they get olde rbut Halladay seems to have fallen off a cliff faster then many others i've seen.
