In terms of geopolitical objectives, I think the US and UK are closer than the US and Canada. Partly a similarity of perspective. Partly because even when Canada shares the same objectives as the other two, the UK is twice our size and more than twice our capability.

And BostonPirate don't be too glib about trying not to kill your allies. I've been to a packed house of 17 000 for the funeral of four canadian soldiers killed by an american pilot high on speed and ignoring oders not to fire. Despite the difference in our capacity and the pointless over-capacity of the US forces, we take our support of our allies seriously and put a lot of national soul searching into doing the right thing. In that room that day, the soul searching lead to one request: Try harder.

I just don't believe Netanyahu would have proposed a meeting in good faith to discuss bilateral matters, middle east security etc.

And while Israel doesn't shut up about being a beacon of democracy unique in the region, it is really a democratic theocracy, with the crazy religious fringe legally in charge of much of israel's daily life, all to the delight of netanyahu's closest political allies.
