Put this in the stack that is unbelievable and abuse of power.

Time for some heads to roll.

.. and here I thought the press were Obama's friends.

What's going on?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, for general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and for the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. It was not clear if the records also included incoming calls or the duration of the calls.

In all, the government seized the records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown, but more than 100 journalists work in the offices where phone records were targeted, on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.

He was President before Obama -- Obama must just be carrying on Bush's program.

Rough day for Obama .. so what would you do after a rough day? Go collect millions of dollars for his PAC and fellow dems.

What a crock of shit.

Oh so he kept up a planned evolution of making money to keep the other party going... weird... it is almost like they are professional politicians and MONEY is the only thing that talks.

I wanna know more about this before I pull my panties up and scream.

Doesn't the warren court have to authorize such collections before communication companies comply? What was the justification? WHat was the reasoning? I wanna know more. not that I wont be outraged BUT I refuse to jump on the "it sounds bad and he is a democrat so ergo..... bandwagon"

Remember the Patriot Act,the thing Bush signed. This allows Obama the power to do what happened here, just as people warned it would back then.

I was thinking that but , again, want more details on how and what occurred.

I have no doubt that for losing control of his administration Obama may not be personally involved but this is the end of his second term. Lame duck from now on out... it remains to be seen if Hillary or the Dem candidate will be castrated politically by these revelations.

Bush gave us the "USA [STRIKE]PATRIOT[/STRIKE]" End-to-Privacy Act. Obama campaigned against it, then delightedly embraced it.

Somewhere in this country is a person -- probably thousands -- with the sound moral fiber to be President. None of the money movers will ever sign off on them.

Not unless they want to relive the Bush Years when they supported many of the same things.

Good job guys. Put your faith in a guy that you won't defend. How crazy is that?

^^

Most here are blaming Bush instead of being outraged that something like this happened.

The government cannot spy on private citizens and the media without a warrant or people breaking the law.

Have you read the Patriot act?

Like I said I wanna know what the reasoning was behind this... if none then they alll need to be in prison. If there is one then it is simply a legal argument. Bush's justice had this power and So does Obama's.

Dont you get it Jack... you think they balme Bush but they are simply reiterating the warning they gave when it was imposed as law. There is a difference.

Good job guys. Put your faith in a guy that you won't defend. How crazy is that?

What on earth are you talking about?

Good question.

The amount of crap authorized in the USAP Act is sickening. Tragically, there are those who proclaim what a great thing it was for Bush to sign, yet whine when Obama makes use of it.

Have you read the Patriot act?

Or for that matter listened to a prosecutor describe some of the things "law enforcement" could do under it? Like being able to seize people's property merely by stating they have a suspicion of association with terrorist activity, in certain locations, and never having to return that property when the suspicion is shown to be groundless?

Not that such is new -- the Puritan streak in both major parties gave us that practice in the misnamed "War on Drugs".

The Patriot Act was a broad overreach I had criticized a lot when Bush was President. I am no fan of a lot of what GWB /Cheney did. When Democrats get elected, and act in ways just as questionable and insidous while I understand the Bush Administration wasn't held to account(except by progressive groups) there is no justification to circle the wagons and protect your own. That is to a great extent what's happened here, and until now out in the public world. Now the press is starting to wake up,and some of Obama's most fervent defenders out there and here. Hopefully others will follow.Or keep their heads up their asses and keep living in their own Shangri-La "reality", which would be unfortunate.

Stop trying to blame Obama and democrats for something Bush and the Republican party started.

9-11 Happened on Bush's watch, so did the economic meltdown. How many times do we have to remind the American people that Bush is responsible for what he left behind.

I am not convinced that the Patriot Act was needed, nor am I outraged, although I am in favor of anything which might cause the Liberal Press to become less slavishly tied to the Democrat party. The Justice Department did not tap any phones, but obtained copies of telephone company records in attempt to find out who how classified information regarding an foiled bombing attempt was leaked and obtained. The JD always had the power to subpoena documents so it is not clear that the Patriot Act was involved.
The government needs to be able to keep secret is methods of foiling the terrorists. Disclosing the methods may make it easier for terrorists to avoid discovery next time. Freedom of the press does not include the right to solicit or obtain classified info, nor the right of government workers to disclose it.

This is a case of reaping what you sow.

The US loves the Patriot Act. It is now an immutable and un-repealable part of the American socio-political fabric.

Fear is a terrible and insidious thing. Since 9/11, America has allowed fear to guide it rather than confidence. But I guarantee you, that if the unwarranted seizure of records unmasks any useful links to terror or the exposure of moles in the fabric of government, more than half of America will all be out there in their best Joe McCarthy suits, waving the flag and cheering for the limitation of rights and freedoms, praising the Patriot Act for being one of Bush's greatest achievements.

Like Jayhawk though, I feel the need to learn more about this before I get totally frantic about the 'intrusion' into AP's reporters' phone records. Getting a list of calls and the personal numbers of reporters doesn't seem that earth shattering somehow.

The irony is that the US government probably is gathering this information for thousands of other people around the world every day but no one would even question it or care.

I want to know more before I go absolutely crazed but two things stand out:

1. These were not "wiretaps" insofar as we know. The written documents were subpoenaed.

2. Even if the subpoenas were lawfully issued, the seizure was an incredibly stupid and poorly thought out act.

I thought about this last night. Trying to blame this outrageous and illegal violation of federal law by the Obama Administration on the Patriot Act and President Bush is like saying it happened because "my dog ate my homework'.

That defense is a sham. Sorry, but it's time for Obama and his people to take responsibility for their actions -- no one made them do anything -- they did it on their own accord.

They are responsible. Stop blaming other people for your actions.

One good thing may come out of this -- the media got a kick in the butt from their friend in the White House and will start doing their job.
