Occupy Wall Street

picture from boston last night ..

apparently this happened in several other cities, too.

just wondering .. don't you guys have a right to protest and peaceful assembly? why didn't riot police show up for teaparty protests?

and why are things like the egyptian protests called "democratic" but the occupy wall street protesters are "unpatriotic"?

The facts of that elude you. The protestors were warned not to go on that part of the park, because the conservancy group that takes care of it just planted $150,000 worth of new plants.

A conservancy group had planted shrubs worth around $150,000 along the greenway and officials were worried about damage, The Washington Post reported.

Also:
Protesters' tents have been in Dewey Square Park in downtown Boston all month, but on Monday they expanded to a larger section of the nearby Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway.

Many linked arms Monday evening in a show of solidarity on their expanded turf.

In fliers handed out on site in Boston, and in a press release, the police told protesters: "If asked to leave an area, please do so peacefully."

They were asked to leave an area to avoid costly damage, and did not do so, so they were arrested. People do not have the right to protest or assemble in violation of the law without facing the repercussions, which is why they were arrested.

For the possibility of damage to dollars 150,000 worth of new plants the police arrested demonstrators who were making use of their legal right to protest on publicly owned land.

Whereas bankers, financial consultants and their ilk who all but collapsed the world's economic system remain untouched by the judicial system.

Back to the reason the demonstrators were protesting ................

Wait wait wait... they got arrested because of FLOWERS? They really must be hippies!

But no, really... these people have a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT to protest peacefully on PUBLICLY OWNED LAND.

No, they were arrested for trespassing after they were given ample opportunity to leave the area. People are not allowed to camp overnight in the Greenway (where the arrests took place), and the protesters were pushing out of the areas where they previously stayed, blocking traffic, and creating an uncertain situation. THAT's why they were arrested.

NOT if it is in violation of the law. (like, say, a law that makes it illegal to camp overnight in the park they were arrested in) Get your head straight. They have the right to protest, but they will get arrested if said protest violates the law.

But engaging in corrupt practices that enrich the bankers, but crash the world economy, will not get one arrested. I think Anatole France said it best:

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

Separate argument that has nothing to do with what's currently being discussed. But nice try.

If you can call two minutes (120 seconds) "ample" opportunity.

That was their final warning. ..|

They had been warned multiple times not to move into the Greenway, but did so anyways. The police could have stopped them as soon as they started to move into it, but instead they gave the protesters the chance to do it on their own.

Yes. GWB killed tens of thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) of people on the basis of lies.

Wall Street bankers helped GWB crash the world economy in a successful attempt to get richer by cheating others, destroying the lives of countless millions in the process.

Who goes to jail? Some people who are unintentionally threatening to damage some plants.

If that does not demonstrate the need for OWS, then people are blind.

My own opinion is that OWS will become quite a violent movement. Not because of the protesters, but because rich people feel too threatened by it. They will send their police to attack it.

The police denying the right of the public to use a public park to protest on the pretext that some plants might be damaged.

No! Not in Syria. In the United States of America. Wow!

Which, again, has nothing to do with what's being discussed.

The argument you're trying to make is, basically, that because the law was broken by someone else, another group of people shouldn't be arrested for breaking the law as well. Its a nonsensical argument.

No. It is against the law for them to camp overnight in the park, which is what they were doing. THAT is why they were arrested. The plants were the reason why they initially asked them not to move into the greenway. Drop the hyperbole, it doesn't help your weak argument.

Still remains a pretext for the arrest of the demonstrators.

The park is public land.

The real reason for the arrest of the demonstrators was to intimidate them to stop demonstrating.

You don't have the slightest understanding of this, do you? This has everything to do with OWS.

No, the argument we're trying to make is that government now serves the rich only, and that needs to change. America is more than just the top 1% of income earners. The constitution was written for everyone, not just rich people and corporations.

I know you guys don't like to be reminded of who you are and what you're doing to America. But we're going to keep turning out on the streets to remind you. You will attack us, beat us, and throw us in jail. But that won't stop us.

We're not gonna let you destroy this country.

Erm. You think I'm 'one of them'? What planet do you live on?

Nonsense. The mayor of Boston supports them. What he doesn't support is a naked violation of the law, and the damage of public property, during their protests.

Trampling on the grass must really test the resolve of Boston's finest to reduce the crime rate.

I found this pic about the Boston police.

It's kinda hard to see what is happening, but the cop has his hand on this womans throat! OK, that is not violent!
Something needs to be done about the police brutality.
