Re: Oscar (Academy Awards) who's watching tonight?

I thought I would look to see what was released today and 12 Years A Slave was released today. I just started watching it

Matthew McConnaughey's character in Dallas Buyers Club is straight, not gay.

Yes, thank you for pointing this out. I had been told by someone else previously that the character was gay and didn't think to question it. My very bad. :(

That fact aside I still found his entire speech rather bizarre - his noting his future self as a hero is just too narcissistic to comprehend, as far as I'm concerned.

Lupita Nyong'o's speech was the best of the evening, I thought - heartfelt, genuine and delivered with poise and elegance.

Re: Oscar (Academy Awards) who's watching tonight?

Was it inspiring? Did it inspire you to do something?

In 12 Years a Slave, it showed me what it was like for an African American to be a slave, 'to be owned' and how degrading it must have been. Keep in mind, as a Canadian, I dont remember being taught much about slavery in high school.
I was in grade 6 when Roots came out (1976) and I didnt watch it so this was the first movie that Ive seen where slavery was main topic of a movie.
Inspire me to do something? No. Im a bit more educated and aware of the subject.

I think the actor whose name Im not going to pretend I know, did a great job and was Oscar worthy. He really carried the movie and was in much of the movie. But he was up against Matthew and Leo (both favorites for their own reasons)

Fyi: Lupita Nyongo isnt introduced until at least 55+ minutes into the movie.

I think all the winners who did win deserved it. I saw all the nominees except for Gravity and Frozen. This year had some really great movies and performances. I think better than some previous years.

Predictable outcome but overall not bad.
