On my way to the hospital

^ Probably not. The slant and twisted spine are congenital. My back and new hip are still at odds with each other. Who knows what will happen when I don't have to sleep on my back anymore?

Sounds like your mismatched leg lengths are adding to the spine problem. Is it not possible to get orthopedically enhanced shoes to cancel out the length problem and rebalance your hips?

Star Warrior - the surgery canceled out the length problem.
Neil is just so used to listing to one side after a lifetime of being that way, that it's a bit disconcerting for him to have advanced to homo "erectus".

:D

I would still recommend at some time in the future Neil see an orthotist to make sure his posture is as good as it should be.

I've had a lift in my right shoe to even out my legs since the 80s. Now that my legs are the same length, I don't need it anymore.

My spine is twisted in 3 ways: laterally (my shoulders and pelvis do not line up); viewed from the side, I don't have the inward curve at the base; finally, viewed from the back, my spine has a shallow 'C' shape.

As bad as my posture has been these past few decades, not even surgery could have made it better.

I had debilitating knee pain for years. Finally had surgery; surgeon said nothing wrong with my knee. He sent me to an orthotist who watched me walk and then made a set of shoe inserts. Knee problem resolved.

It is worth checking out even if the correction does not resolve all issues.

My first non-medical outing since my visit to the hospital:

This morning, I took a trip to my bank for a bit of business which needed to be taken care of. I didn't even have to wait in line. As soon as the doors were opened, I started to hobble inside with my walker and a teller in the 'business' booth called me over and said she would help me. She updated my bankbook and mentioned how many transactions there were (43). I explained that I had been out of commission for a few weeks because of a broken hip and she told me that her grandmother had recently broken her hip as well. It gave us something to talk about as the printer rattled off my update.

After the bank, my landlord took me to FreshCo to do a bit (actually, quite a lot) of grocery shopping. I'm glad my roommate went with us. It took 3 trips for him to bring everything in from the car.

I'll tell you, though... I was glad to get back home and off my feet. Now I'm worried about tomorrow. My physio guy is coming back and I'm not sure I'll be up to his torture.

On April 6, I'm going to put on my shoes. Beginning on that day, I will be able to bend over and tie them myself. I'm sure my roommate will be happy when that day gets here, too.

Neil,
It's great to hear about your trip - you did a lot - it's expected you're going to feel it - hopefully a few OTC painkillers will help you with the pain and you'll be able to rest OK.

I suspect that, while you may still be sore, you'll do fine (maybe slow, but fine) with your Physio tomorrow.

I'm sure your therapist will be glad to hear what all you did.

I think it is great that you have a few people around you willing to help.

I must admit that when I am ill the biggest struggle is actually asking for help if I am unable to do things.

I'm like that when I'm sick, too, but this is different. I simply cannot do what I've had to ask my roommate to do for me, as humiliating as it might be for me. Sometimes pride must be swallowed.

My physio guy just left. He taught me one more exercise to do on my bed. Basically, it's an exercise I've been doing standing up (that infamous 'to the side' lift except I do it lying down on my side and lifting my leg up.

We shook hands when he left. Today was his final visit.

I'm on my own now.

Wow. You still have the occasional follow up with your doctor, right?

The Physical Therapist must think you're doing well enough not to have to continue seeing you.

I know how hard you've been working to exceed expectations.

Mike,
I don't think that's in Neil's cards - based on his back issues.

I was going to say after March - you can start working out for the Men's Curling Team!

I hope his visit wasn't tortuous. Was it?

Would he return if needed?

Well maybe something less stressful on the back like swimming or aerobics....
