Pastor Rick Warren's son kills himself.

^ No. It isn't. Christ had nothing to say on the subject of Homosexuality. Neither did the 10 Commandments which he exhorted his followers to keep. In fact, find me where Christ tells his followers to pay attention to Leviticus.

It is some old testament nonsense dragged up from the iron age and some Pauline scribblings that got dragged into the doctrine of the modern church by repressed theologians that gets confused with Christianity. It is this talibangelical goat herder mentality from the OT that the Warren's parade around as Christianity...but it isn't. Even the vast majority of Jews...who really are the owners of the OT, aren't confused by the English bible/KJV interpretations on homoism.

Since the Rick Warrens of this world think that homosexuality is a mental illness
IMHO, fundamentalist Christianity is a mental illness.

the iron age gods expect from mankind.
Using "iron age gods" in the same sentence with Rick Warren is doing them an injustice.

My condolences to the Warren family in their grief and loss of a son they loved.

I sincerely hope he doesn't have to deal with people like himself.

When my brother committed suicide I was angry. I am still angry. I am OK with being angry.

At his service the priest talked alot about his sin...I was furious. The priest knew I was furious. I told myself to keep my mouth shut but the lovely religious do gooders couldn't help themselves from inserting themselves into my grief and anger to tell me "the truth"....people like Rick Warren...and I didn't keep my mouth shut though I kept it short and sweet and civil. They told me he was in a "better place" and I told them if that was the case maybe they should join him in that "better place" and leave me alone.

May he not have to face someone like himself while he is grieving....that is my wish for him and his family.

Sorry for your loss. Although I have not suffered the loss a family member due to suicide I have lost several friends & it is indeed hard to understand another's sufferings.

I can understand the vehemence towards Rick Warren like any other decent human being; the things he supports are utter abominations. However, he is still a father, and he his dealing with grief along with his family. Suicide is never a pleasant reality, especially when it happens under your own roof. I may have nothing nice to say about the man, but I will say that I am sorry for the loss of his son.

IMHO, fundamentalist Christianity is a mental illness.

First, the loss of anyone to suicide, especially a family member, is tragic indeed.

Second, I am of the opinion that any ideology professing absolutism is, by its own definition, inherently flawed & such, in again in my opinion, is the case with fundamentalist Christianity.

Not to worry, I'm sure he'll exploit his son's death and write a book about it, reap millions, tax free of course for his "church".

C'mon, Bob. Magic is in every religion's DNA. Without it, religion couldn't exist.

Last year an ex-friend old me I'm gay because I'm full of demons. I could hear a banjo in the background.

Christianity makes no sense.

It's based on a virgin births and resurrections. A God who is not one but three. His son rose from the dead, in other words he's a zombie. You're supposed to talk to this zombie and thank him for everything you and the rest of mankind put on your table. A God who knocked up someone else's wife but didn't actually fuck her. The son spoke radical ideas for the time to so the establishment had him killed. Take care of the poor, greed is bad. Give up your wealth. Peace. Radical ideas then and now. Present day followers wouldn't listen to him. They would kill him now too. Besides, he was a Jew. A true follower of this zombie doesn't like Jews.

This ancient religion's leaders promise you paradise in another life but do not question what they say. It's power over the masses and political struggle. They read a book of morality plays and their followers take it as a historical document.

This two thousand year old religion isn't necessary anymore.

That makes prefect sense.

Religion, seldom has something promised so much, given so little and killed so many.

I had two close friends try to commit suicide in the early 80's. One in my house. I am glad to report they were unsuccessful. However, both suffered from the same malady--they suffered from low self esteem because they were raised by religion-preaching homophopic parents who spewed their anti-gay hatred throughout their childhoods.

Both went into extensive counseling, and finally came out to their families. While neither was "excommunicated" from their families, it was stressful for both.

One guy moved to San Francisco and flourished. Second friend stayed in my life, and I'm so glad he did. Sadly, he has since passed on from AIDS in the late 90's.

...my favorite part..the virgin birth with three men showing up bearing gifts. If that happened today it would be an episode of Jerry Springer...who's the daddy?

Much like public opinion shifting on gay marriage and drowning out the hate

I see some of that here - people showing compassion and empathy rather than proving they have none

And it reads and feels good

Imagine burying your son

That's not an us and them thing

My condolences to the Warren family in their grief and loss of a son they loved.

Do you know them?
If not, i don't know how your sympathy can be genuine.

There are millions of people dying around the world and me/you choose not to give condolences ....

Imagine being the friend of someone's son that you had to bury because that friend's family was too caught up in the teachings of Pastor Rick Warren's message to his followers.

Not the message of Christ, or the Bible, but Rick Warren's message of "Christ's Love."

I think that's what a lot of guys who are posting that they're upset about, that or you either don't or choose to get.

Failing to at least acknowledge some of where their hatred for Rick Warren and his message comes from, and the lack of compassion that they're willing to share toward him and the death of his son, might be where you're finding your disconnect here.

If I'm reading you correctly, you find it disdainful that there's so little empathy and compassion toward a man who lost his son to suicide.

That seems to be where your disdain ends; not that the father, and his actions words and deeds, might have also contributed in his son's death.

I've already stated that it shouldn't be for anyone of us to judge such matters.

And by NOT DOING SO, makes us better than him, and with any hope more empathetic toward his loss.

Though I personally will shed no tears for him.

Perhaps I could encourage you to make a better point in your opinion, as opposed to preaching against proper "manners."

I agree that many of the opinions expressed here are vile and vulgar, but rather than "clutching my pearls," or calling for my "smelling salts," or "passing judgement" because the stones that Rick Warren tossed at us as human beings, are now being tossed back at him, I suggested in my previous post in this thread some scripture and moved along.

Now why can't you?

Art imitating life imitating art. Bobby has bible-wanking mommie who harangues him because he is gay. He so overcome by self-loathing that he kills himself by jumping off an overpass. Mommie is so overcome by guilt that she becomes a caped crusader for LBGT issues - marches in Pride parade. I seriously doubt if "Rev." Warren will be doing likewise any time soon, even if his son hadn't been gay.

Great movie indeed. Should be required viewing for the doubters and Warren defenders.

Now why can't you?

if you'd like to focus on my pov by all means

but it would help if you got it

i've been clear - but i'll do it again

a young man committed suicide - who the father is is irrelevant

one poster here suggested here that if he were warren's son he'd have committed suicide too
then suggested the son was gay and that's why he did it

other dead hearts focused on warren the dad

the good news is that enough people - not you - focused on what's important - and it's not rick warren here

empathy or sympathy for rick warren ? that's up to you

using this thread as a battering ram ?

thanks but no

and frankly your personalization of my posting with your outrageous music choice offering disqualifies you from making any reasonable case

as does your jekyl and hyde moderator/poster/moderator/poster bit

hope that helps

My enemy deserves no sympathy. They will receive none either.

It is sad a young man lost his life. I refuse however to give a pass because one of the normal things that occur in life occurred.

So fuck Rick Warren before this and fuck him after this. He is the lost soul. Not I.

It's been revealed he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I haven't seen where he got the gun.... bought it himself or used his Father's gun. If it's the latter, why did Warren have a gun in the house when he knew his son suffered from life long mental illness. If he bought it a background check would have revealed his problems.

More proof that guns are way to easy to get and need to be strictly controlled.

Amormino said coroner's officials are not releasing the type of weapon used and are still investigating the origins and ownership of the gun.

If it's revealed he used a weapon found in the home then his Father has to explain how his suicidal son got access to it.
