National Public Radio dissuaded one of its most visible gay employees from attending a corporate LGBTQ Pride event, as the Trump administration and congressional Republicans put pressure on the public broadcaster.

“The guidance in our ethics handbook is to ‘avoid appearances at private industry or corporate functions,’” the organization’s managing editor for standards and practices, Tony Cavin, wrote to longtime anchor Ari Shapiro on Wednesday in an email, which was apparently sent by accident to many other NPR journalists.

“Because this is a closed corporate event I think it would be best to politely decline,” Cavin wrote, according to a copy of the email exchange seen by Semafor.

I used to feel that transgender people didn't really belong under the LGBT+ umbrella (being an identity rather than a sexual-orientation), but I was wrong. All people of all sexualities, orientations, and gender identities are under threat from political and religious extremists and and bigots, and we are better off all banding together for protection, defence, and in order to fight back.

The new HHS secretary, Robert "brain worm" Kennedy Jr, adheres to a disproven circa 1981 theory that AIDS isn't caused by HIV. Instead, he maintains that AIDS is caused by the use of poppers by the gay community.
Kennedy is a known spreader of conspiracy theories, including that "HIV does not cause AIDS, that COVID-19 was designed to spare Ashkenazi Jews (those from Eastern Europe) and Chinese people, and that Lyme disease is likely a militarily engineered bioweapon," per The Advocate.

In one video, Kennedy can be seen saying that AIDS was not a virus, but was spread through poppers use among gay men.

"The virus is a passenger virus, and these people are dying mainly because of poppers," he said. "A hundred percent of the people who died in the first thousand [with] AIDS were people who were addicted to poppers, which are known to cause Kaposi sarcoma in rats. And they were people who were part of a gay lifestyle where they were burning the candle at both ends."

The Trump administration has started coming for poppers.

Double Scorpio, a company that sells lube, clothing and accessories, as well as Double Scorpio Cleaner, a popular brand of poppers, has announced that it is stopping all operations following an FDA search and seizure at its offices. The FDA is currently under the purview of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who in the past has said that he believes poppers cause AIDS.

Double Scorpio wiped its social media and website and replaced it with a statement posted on March 13, 2025, saying, "Double Scorpio has stopped all operations following a search and seizure at our offices by the FDA" and that the company believes the FDA has "performed similar actions" towards other manufacturers and sellers of the product.

This reminds me of a very bad joke that was making the rounds in the late 80s:
Q. What is the hardest thing about telling your family you have AIDS?
A. Trying to convince them you're Haitian.

I'm sure that RFK Jr has an explanation and I'm willing to bet that he's going to blame it on mass-vaccination campaigns in Africa where a single needle/syringe was used to inoculate multiple people. There is some truth to the stories of a syringe/needle being used, however usually when we see that practice occurring, it's the more transmissible viruses like hepatitis that result.

It's important to step back for a moment and realign ourselves with "normality". The Republican Senators were warned that this guy was a lunatic with fringe theories, a long history of drug use and questionable behaviors. They voted for him anyway, saying that he assured them that he wouldn't let his fringe beliefs influence his professional conduct. Like all of these Trump nominees, it was all lies.
 
As I understand it, he thinks that Poppers themselves reduced immunity against AIDS and has clung to this idea for years.

An immigrant rights group that represents an LGBTQ asylum seeker from Venezuela says the Trump-Vance administration on March 15 “forcibly removed” him from the U.S. and sent him to El Salvador.

Immigrant Defenders Law Center Litigation and Advocacy Director Alvaro M. Huerta during a telephone interview with the Washington Blade on Tuesday said officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection alleged his organization’s client was a member of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuela-based gang, because of his tattoos and no other information.
