Proposition 8 Has Officially Passed

What is so GREAT about gay marriage? Nothing, except that the revocation of legal gay marriage in California is not just a preservation of the status quo--it's a reactionary measure that takes away rights that have already been granted.

Yes, gay marriage is largely only symbolic. But that's exactly the point! The passing of prop 8 basically communicates to the rest of the country that, even in California, the recognition of gays and lesbians as real, legitimate people might have been a little hasty and needs to be reconsidered.

Absolutely fucking outrageous.

That is exactly how i feel, If marriage is struck down there it sends a message. if we would have won a landslide there states would realise the potential upsides of Gay marriage and thus would lead to wider acceptance and rights, but now thats just a dream.

You know...

now that they've very clearly made a religious definition of marriage into law (again, but this time plainly), my proposed move would be quite appropriate: they're all congratulating themselves on having "kept marriage pure" or something, so it would be perfect to have the state say, "Fine -- keep it. Everyone is doing civil unions now, and you're not so special after all".

I have a question

If we are not being treated with equal rights, how come we have to pay the full taxes?

because I own a home and pay the highest taxes in the country, I'm fucking good to pay all this shit, and school taxes (60% of my taxes) for kids and they don't let my partner share....

my money is good for this....but not to get FUCKING MARRIED & HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS! !

There's a very pointed protest theme in there....

or a political ad, for that matter.

Damn! I wish I had a billion to play with to mount a good campaign on this.

For the Bible Belt:

<resonant voice from off screen> God gave us this Constitution, to give equal rights to all His children. Are we living up to it?

<picture of people paying taxes; but when you come by, a couple of the coupons everyone is getting in return are pulled back; the camera zooms in to show they're labeled "Freedom of Association" and "Freedom of Choice">

I agree with you on some points but I do want to get some clarification. Are you saying that a lot of gay whites that oppress minorities in the gay community do so in terms of dating or in terms of general acceptance or both?

I meant general acceptance but I guess it applies to both. I know so many gay white guys say and do awful things do ethnic minorities. A lot of gay white men assume black men are homophobic and prejudge them. It is also unfair how a lot gay white men try to compare black civil rights and and gay civil rights as if they are exactly the same. There are certain similarities but it is not the same.

Since there is talk about Black homophobia, I wanted to post a funny video of comedian Wanda Sykes on the Ellen show last week. She talks about Blacks and Prop 8

Excuse their funny costumes--it was the Halloween episode.

I'm very confident that California will allow Same-Sex marriage in the future. It's bound to happen. I feel that California is becoming more and more liberal with the passing years. I could be totally wrong... it's just from what I hear.

You guys are always welcome to Canada to marry! The whole country allows Same-Sex marriage.

Yeah, Canada...
where I can't choose how to defend myself or what with...
where I get persecuted at the border for a misdemeanor ten years old that isn't even a crime in Canada...
where the people I know are glad they live near the border, so they can cross over to get decent health care...

Wait, though -- does public nudity out in nature come under freedom of expression, up there?

Okay, we'll try again then - don't say we don't try to please everybody up here. Everybody but Kulindahr is welcome to come to Canada!

ahah wanda sykes makes my life....I remeber one thing she said was "If you support gay marriage, Do not marry someone of the same sex as yourself. it is that simple"

You just keep right on chatterin'. You know damn well what you're doing, what this is about, what these nutcases are about. You're not fooling me with that crap. It's about hate. It's always been about hate and it always will be. Which is fine. I hate Christians too. I guess lucky for them I can't pass laws against them.

Ah, blindness!

Just like the Republicans who can't think that the U.S. has ever done anything that might have offended any Muslims...

Anybody else notice how California voters decided to grant animals extra rights while taking away gay rights?

Never underestimate the evil selfishness of mob-rule.

We've always had these rights. Obama and the State of California never "granted" them to us.

When we do get equal rights, we shouldn't thank anyone for them. We should only say, "It's about fucking time."

I think you are correct on this. Look at the age breakdown.

Old people opposed it with the exact same percentage young people supported it. Middle aged was split. As soon as enough of those old people die off we will get equality.

funny if you count those numbers, you would think 8 didn't pass.

Winston Churchill; Never, never, never give up trying. or if you prefer

Never give in - never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

Not really all that shocking to me, at all.

Most Blacks have a very low tolerance of Gays. I think it all boils down to many Blacks are simply very religious and their Christian beliefs led them to vote this way.

And that really puzzles me about Blacks. Here they have been discriminated against for decades. And yet they are fine discriminating against Gays.

I heard about that earlier on the MSM. All I had to say was...wow, no wonder why this shit went down the drain the way it did. Every black person turned out in huge numbers in California for an Obama win in this election but yet they vote in favor of this when Obama wants to change this country around when he gets sworn into office? Obama may be in big support for civil unions, but he has already opposed to this gay marriage ban so I am happy he will be the first president to make a stand against this when he takes office. I am so proud that I had supported a candidate who was working for the GLBT community before he got elected and now I am proud that I am 100 percent behind my next president!

I really don't know what it is going to take to open up their minds and make them realize that we are human beings and we want change just like they want change in this country. It's sad that intolerance still lingers in this country despite what all of us are still fighting for--equality.

70% of African Americans backed Prop 8 -- that's a substantially higher percentage than old people. Maybe waiting for people who support discrimination to die off isn't the best plan.

LOL
No kidding.

I'd be interested in seeing figures from the AA community on accepting gays having the privileges and benefits without the word "marriage". My experience when interested in the issue has been among whites pretty much exclusively.

Put it in perspective guys. What is so GREAT about marriage when civil unions exist? It's history is filled with strict rules, inequality and arranged marriages, especially where women are concerned...for example, ancient Hebrew law forced a man to marry his brother's widow. Over 50% of heterosexual marriages end in divorce these days, and cheating is rampant. What the hell are we trying to emulate? The roots of marriage come from economic security between two people. Add irrelevant and disgraceful organized religion into the mix. What are you actually left with?

The history of marriage and all it's victimizing sickens me. I couldn't care less if gay marriage is banned. I don't need this disgraceful institution based on inequality to give my relationship worth and meaning, whether it's in the eyes of the law or not.
I could not have said that better!!!....thank you for those words!!!:=D:

This guy, who has produced so many Pro Obama Videos, and criticizing racism and people not voting Obama on the basis of race, produced a scathing commentary against Blacks and Hispanics in California that voted for Proposition 8.

I totally understand his frustration.

Blacks want Equality, and us Gays helped them achieve a milestone on Tuesday. And yet, these two groups threw Gays under the bus on Tuesday.

Whites and Asians were shown to be against Prop 8, and it was clearly Black and Hispanic voters that are responsible for getting it passed.

They're just like most gays, Midnight -- they really don't give a shit about anyone else, so long as they get the goodies from the government that they want.

But he's showing the same ignorance I keep running into on this board, of just what the term "marriage" means to people who are serious church types. If the vote had been to guarantee that all the benefits of marriage granted in the law would also be available to gays, but without the word "marriage", that likely would have passed. But when gays ask to have the word "marriage", many believers see that as a personal invasion worse than walking in on someone taking a dump, worse than someone walking in a peeing on the dinner table when dessert is being served.

Many of them, listening to him, will think he's a stupid ignoramus who is talking nonsense -- and in their world, they'll be right.

He needs to spend some time understanding where they're at.

I call him disrespectful and ignorant.

Oh -- and a liar; if he respected them, he'd understand why they voted as they did.
