Retaining The Ashes 2006/7

C'mon Aussie C'mon C'mon!!

They said those old chappies in Australia's "Dad's Army" couldn't do it. Well they did! And to celebrate a glorious win, I think the barmy army should all stand to attention before play begins in Melbourne whilst every one else joyously sings the Dad's Army theme song

Who do you think you were kidding Mr Flintoff
If you thought we were on the run
We are the boys who stopped your little game
We are the boys who made you think again
Cos, who do you think you were kidding Mr Flintoff?
If you thought Australia's done

With sincere apologies to Bud Flanagan

It's a foregone conclusion England will retain the Ashes in Australia during the 2006/7 tour ..|

It seems the cricketing authorities in OZ are already doing their best to make sure English supporters have a difficult time buying tickets [-X

It seems the Aussies are accepting the fact that the only ashes they will be seeing for a long time will be those on the b-b-q ;)

To which I responded

I hope you have a supply of humble pie in the larder.......

Perhaps along with the humble pie, you might like a feed of crow as well?

Sorry, but I cannot help rubbing it in LOL

Two points to be aware of:
1. England held the Ashes for the shortest time in history - just 15 months.
2. If Australia wins the series 5 - 0 it will be the first time the series has been won 5 zip for 85 years - last occurred in 1920/21.

Aussie Aussie Aussie Oy Oy Oy

Congratulations to the Aussies.:=D: :=D: :=D:

Three wonderful Test matches, every one going into the fifth day.

I'm sure Perth - and the rest of Australia - is partying today.

For me, at the moment, I shall never see that message "cookie deleted" again without seeing that McGrath ball angling across Cook's bat late on the 4th day...

A whitewash possible?

A whitewash is possible. I don't think that the Australian team will drop their intensity, so (barring weather problems) it is up to England to find a way to step up. We have seen that England can have good sessions and days - even in the fourth innings they managed a total which was higher than the highest successful fourth innings chase at the WACA - so there are some positive signs. However, can they actually deliver over five days?

In my view, for England to have any hope, they need to start by making some more changes to the team, and finally select the team that they should have selected in the first place. Then, they need to get Fletcher to take some responsibility for his stuff-ups, and thereby take some pressure off Flintoff.

Then, all they need is a miracle! :p

It is being reported in Australia that Warne and McGrath will be retiring at the end of the Sydney test. Not officially announced yet (that I've seen), but it seems to be coming from Channel 9, for whom Warne will be working as a commentator.

It would make sense for them to retire at the end of this series. With the Ashes returned to their rightful place, what more do they have to prove? Also, Australia's next test match after Sydney will be in November 2007, so it would make sense to go at the end of the season. I wonder if we'll have any opening batsmen retire too?

Why didn't Warnie retire before the Ashes Series.](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Only joking!!! The greatest Australian cricketer of modern times? I think so. He has won so many crucial games for Australia since that "Gatting ball" in 1993. Not only that, he has sent a shiver down the spine of every cricketer and spectator in every match he's played. And provided huge entertainment to friend and foe alike.

He, and all of us, will love whatever he does in the next 2 Tests.:=D: :=D: :=D:

I doubt if Cricket Australia will allow all the Dad's Army guys to go at one time. I think they will go gradually, and some after the next World Cup.

I forgot to say: A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!! to all the cricket-loving JUBbers down under.

Greaves,

The same to you - and to all other Sports nuts and JUBbers everywhere.

Best wishes for the Festive Season!!

Well, its now official that McGrath will be going at the end of the World Cup. In terms of tests, this means that he and Warne retire together in Sydney.

I predict strong interest in the next two Ashes tests! ..|

A lot of people in the UK will be tuning in on Sky for the first day of the 4th Ashes Test at the MCG, as it's the Boxing Day bank holiday.

The first day looks set to be watched by 95,000-100,000 spectators, which would be an official record attendance at a cricket match.:=D: :=D: :=D:

Let's hope it's not a White(wash) Christmas for England.;)

I watched Carols by Candlelight from Melbourne last night. It was raining and more rain is forecast for today. Let's hope the rain puts the bushfires out today and clears for tomorrow.

Terrible performance by England at the MCG.:(

To go from 101 for 2 to 159 all out was woeful to watch. The England fans who stayed up thru' the night to watch on Sky Sports must be - like me - really frustrated by such a pathetic display.](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Congrates to Warnie on his 5 wickets..| Wonder if he is having second thoughts about his retirement from Test cricket?

Hi Greaves:wave:

Yes, sadly, they did rather "fall over" didn't they?

I almost wonder if Warnie has signed some sort of pact with the Devil to get his exit scripted quite this well (he's a great bowler - but something of a wanker, as we all know).

Oh well - that was only the first innings for England. It could still get interesting...

Well the first day's crowd got to a tad over 89000, about 1700 less than the 90800 record attendance set back in 1961. However the attendance today was the second highest ever and the highest for a Boxing Day attendance. Lets hope with warmer weather over the next few days the attendance record may be broken. It is ironic that the Melbourne has had high temperatures and strong north winds, low humidity for the past three weeks, then has its coldest Christmas Day on record, and Boxing Day was pretty chill too.

Farmerrex: I see the wiki article I posted above has been updated already, confirming your stats.:=D:

TriBi: you're right of course. If the previous 3 tests are anything to go by - all going to the final 5th day -this Test could still spring some surprises.

One of the Sky commentators - Botham I think - reminded us the only thing Warnie has not done in his Test career - apart from captain Australia - is score a century. Don't know if you're a betting man...;)
