Retaining The Ashes 2006/7

I had to do a couple of interviews this morning. When I arrived home before lunch and turned the telly on, Australia was 5/84. I said a rude word starting with "F" very loudly. I siad to myself, "At least the Poms got to 2/102 yesterday!"

Anyway, as well all know, things got a little better after that. In fact they got a whole lot better! Hayden and Symonds both passed 150 in a wonderful partnership which netted 279 runs. I really don't think England can win from here.

BTW...what is it with Flintoff's very strange field placements? For most of the day, he had someone standing next to the batsman at the bowlers end./ The only time this fieldsman touched the ball was when the ball was returned to the bowler's end after a run had been scored. At one stage, Flintoff had a mid off, a slightly wide mid off and an even slightly wider mid off...and the bowler was bowling on leg stump! Duh!!!

Only one result in this game now. Ponting could declare overnight if he wanted to: England have no answer to Shane Warne.

Warne - despite all the hoopla - has only taken 5 wickets in each of the previous 3 Ashes Test. But in each match 4 of those wickets have been in England's second innings.

In this test he has already taken 5 wickets during England's FIRST innings!

Of course, Ponting won't declare early. 80,000 at the MCG yesterday.:=D: Presumably the same again tomorrow, many of them hoping/dreaming of a maiden Test century for Warne.:gogirl:

And England be will left with a similar challenge they faced at Perth: having to bat for 2 days to save the game.

Yes - oh dear...it wasn't much of a fight, was it?

Fourth Test all over in three days. Warnie 40 no, stranded before he could make his maiden test century.

It was a pitiful performance by the Poms. Poor Cricket Victoria, got to refund 80000 tickets x 2 days x $80 (avg) each?

Greaves, (probably no other Poms taking much interest to ask this question) did you stay up and watch it or did you go to bed to wake up to hear the Beeb announcer giving you the bad news during the breakfast news bulletins?

5 zip in Sydney? Has not been done since 1920/21 series.(!)

farmerrex: I didn't stay up to watch thru' the night, as I was working today - Thurs 28/12 - so tuned into Sky when I got up. I could not believe the game was over.

I expected - as did the broadcasters, CA, the MCG, the fans - this game to go into the 4th day at least.!oops!

What we must not forget is that this Ashes series has been absolutely riveting to watch. England are 4-0 down, but there have had moments/sessions when England had the Aussies in trouble...

Now the only question remaining is: can the Aussies whitewash England at the 5th Test in Sydney?

5 - 0 then, just accept it!

And Cricket Victoria only has to refund 45000 tickets, they wised up before the event and did not pre-sell the 5th day!

Just to say "Happy New Year!!!" to all the Aussie sport-loving Jubbers. You even beat us Poms there, by getting to it long before we do.;)

"It's a foregone conclusion England will..." win the final Ashes Test in Sydney.;)

Hey - Happy New Year Greaves!

Oh - and sorry - but I think your "foregone conclusion" comment is about as likely as your initial assertion in your first post...but you know that of course :p

Nevertheless - you are a true sporting gentleman :D

Enjoy your celebrations and have a spectacular 2007!

no excuses we will win 4-0 with a washed out test at the scg

I'm looking at this post from Oct.11th - and the weather outside - and the forecast...

...and I'm beginning to wonder if someone is a bloody Psychic...:-)

It dosent look like there will be enough rain

although as i speak England are coming off due to bad light

Happy New Year everyone.

According to the BBC, the weather for Sydney is set fair for the next few days. So CTM, your remarkable prediction - thanks Tribi for reminding us - might not be entirely accurate. But still pretty amazing.:=D: :=D: :=D:

Can England, with two recognised batsmen still at the crease, build a decent total on the 2nd day?

I'm overwhelmed with work for the next few days, so cannot stay up thru' the night.;)

Let's hope the English boys don't have the same problem.:gogirl:

Not enough rain in Sin City today to do any damage, they played through to 6.30pm+ tonight and play will start at 10am AEDST (11pm GMT) to catch up more time.
Stumps Second day
POMS 291
Oz 4/188
Oz trails by 103 runs with 6 wickets in hand.

This game is over. Australia will hammer themselves into a good 1st innings lead tomorrow. England will post another pathetic reply. End of series. 5-0 to the Aussies.

Look at that England 1st innings' score-card. The last 5 batsmen scored 4 - Four!!!- runs between them. I could have done better than that.

If some bright journalist/entrepreneur/JUBber could get hold of the the stumps and bails after this game is over, and burn them...;) ;) ;)

^ Oh greaves - I am rather disappointed - where did that cheery optimism go?

Or is this just a bit of "reverse psychology" (perhaps if I say the Aussies are certain to win, they'll somehow fall apart?)

Well, here we are at the end of Day 3 and the Poms are 5/12! Can the South African save the day? Na, I don't think so. Should be over in the second session of Day 4.

Just a thought.......if Mr Flintoff spent as much time concentrating on being captain as he spends on looking at the replays, maybe he could set some decent fields.

Sadly (for Aussies) your prediction was wrong, Oz will have to bat again. probably straight after lunch. Then it will be all over. So all you Poms can breathe a sigh of relief.

First one dayer next Friday 12 Jan

Farmerrex: Unfortunately for us, my prediction seems to be spot on. I was not saying the the game would end on the 3rd day; just that it would end with an easy Aussie victory.

The Aussie tailenders put on 170 odd runs. England have posted a poor reply. As Warnie - and everyone - has pointed out, England are effectively 12 for 5.

Tribi: In the last over of the day Pieterson should keep the strike. What does he do? Take an early single and leave the poor nightwatchman Panesar to face the remaining balls. Such selfish disregard of the needs of his team is beyond belief.](*,)

I suspect KP is not the most popular person in the England dressing-room tonight. A strong Captain would give him a real bollicking.[-X

KP will probably be out enjoying the wonderful pleasures of Sydney.:(

So its all over!

At 12.18pm AEDST on 5 Jan Hayden hit a four to take the series 5 - 0 for Australia. In the penultimate ball Hayden hit a glorious six. For McGrath's final Test before retirement he took 3/38, snd Warne did excellently with the bat.

Not since 1920/21 - 86 years has a country won the Ashes 5 - 0. Back then it was Australia too - o Australia is the only country to win a series 5 - 0 twice!

Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oy Oy Oy!

BTW, my prediction was wrong, Australia had to bat again BEFORE lunch!
