Retaining The Ashes 2006/7

A must-win game England did win, at last, v the Aussies.:=D:

But if the Kiwis beat the Aussies tomorrow, it seems over for England as far as reaching the final is concerned. Wonder who Australia would prefer to meet in the final games?;)

I would prefer to face England

New Zealand seem consistently more dangerous from what i have seem

It is a foregone conclusion - no wait! - that if a poll were held today, Ricky Ponting would be voted "Best Cricketer in the World". He is totally awesome.:=D: :=D: :=D:

One of the pleasures of having Sky Sports has been to watch Ponting "live" in the Ashes games and the ODI's. Both as captain and player he has excelled.

He showed that brilliance again today v the Kiwis.

So it's all down to the England-Kiwis game in Brisbane on Tuesday as to who will face Australia in the final games.

Any predictions for the Allan Border medal

Test player - Ponting
One Day - Hussey
AB Medal - Ponting

England won the ODI against the Kiwis tonight at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Greaves, where are you? Thought you would be crowing like mad abou this win. Anyway it puts off you travelling to Heathrow to welcome your boys home for a week.

They play Australia in a best of three games, starting Friday night at the MCG. then Sunday at the SCG, and if required a third match in Adelaide on Tuesday 13 Feb.

Greaves, you should be ready to welcome home this fantastic English team at Heathrow on Tuesday morning, because they will be on the first London bound plane out of Sydney on Monday, having lost 2 - 0 to Australia. I hope the Queen is there as well to take back the M.B.E.s she gave to the English team last year. They have shown they are not worthy recipients of such an honour.

Farmerrex: when I left for work this morning the Kiwis were 100+ for 1 wicket. When I clicked on BBC Sports at lunchtime, I was amazed to see England had won.:=D: :=D: :=D:

I'm of the belief that it's not over until the fat lady sings. And as Shanie left the stage a while ago - too early in my opinion; he should have stayed on for the ICC World Cup - then England do have a chance...|

Ramindra: ham and humble pie, washed down with a couple of bottles of Wolf Blass Yellow Label Chardonnay. Delicious...|

Anything is possible in cricket. That's why it's such a wonderful game.

Well if your buying I will have a Grange Hermitage.

Farmerrex, you are obviously a man of exquisite and expensive taste...| This:

is the wine England will be drinking if they can win the ODI's final games.;) If England do win the series, can I expect a case of Penfolds to be winging it's way to the greaves cellar?:D :D :D

As I wait for the first game of the ODI finals to start later this evening - morning in the UK -I note the silence from wine-ing Aussies.;)

In vino veritas?;)

^ Oh - I think it is more a case of "quiet confidence"

Just one small point - the one game that England won against us was when Australia were without captain Ponting.

Seems that England are going to be without captain Vaughn?

Why in the hell wasn't Tait playing?
And why was Watson playing?
he is an average batsman and bowler we dont need a flintoff wannabe we need the best batsmen and bowlers and watson is not it

oh well at least it was entertaining unlike the rest of the games so far
well done to the poms as well

When I left to go to work this morning, England were 15/3. So when an Aussie work colleague told me England had won the the game, I assumed he was winding me up.:p

Well done Collingwood: he will remember this game for the rest of his life. Great in the field, and even greater with the bat.:=D: :=D: :=D:

Sydney on Sunday should be interesting.;)

Yes - I was still working when I caught a glipmse of a TV and saw "3 for 19". Like Greaves my thoughts were "they're toast - it's in the bag" - Whoopee!

Then when I finished work, it was still 3 wickets - for something like 160 odd...and I thought "oh shit - what happened?"

Collingwood happened. Unfortunately. (For us).

It was still a nail biter until the last few overs. Oh well - well done the Poms, it was a magnificant recovery.

Savour it while ye may - hopefully we'll make better selection choices next match.

It's all over. The Poms won the Tri Nations One Day series.

They really found their form at the tail end (where it counted).

Well done.:=D:

Like a phoenix from the Ashes...| England have just won the 2nd ODI in Sydney.:=D: :=D: :=D: Another awesome performance from Collingwood.:=D:

It's only the consolation prize for England after they were humiliated in the Ashes series. Australia are still, of course, the best cricket side in the world at the moment. And I expect them to prove that in the ICC World Cup coming up next month.

But - a big but - they are missing Shane Warne. If there was one cricketer who made any opposition batsmen tremble, it was Shane Warne.

Indeed, I wonder if RP and Australian Cricket might try to persuade SW to postpone his retirement, and join them in the Caribbean? Shane, Australia and the World Cup could only benefit from his presence.

Naturally, as an England supporter, I hope SW continues to prefer slippers to flippers.;)

^ Yes, Collingwood (deservedly) got the "Performer of the Finals" award (tho' Ponting got "Man of the Series").

As for Warne - I think the chances of him "coming out of retirement" are somewhere between nil and zero. :D

Worry not tho' - there is a hell of a lot of depth in Australian cricket. The players are there - it is just a matter of giving them the chance of integrating into the team.

Remember the taunt at the beginning of the Ashes series - that the Aussies were "Dads Army"? Well, "Dads Army" were playing because, regardless of age, they were still the best (and they proved it!)

No matter - there is a lot of talent coming up - all that is required is a little time for them to be able to "settle in" (as the English side have just begun to do at the climax of the One Day series).

Ummm, Tribi et al, I think Sin City's weather won in the end.

Well - even I am prepared to admit that the writing was well and truly on the wall when the rain started (and restarted).

Even with the full fifty overs I don't think I would have been too optimistic.
