Rufus Wainwright Slams Beyonce's Music

To those of you unfamiliar with Rufus Wainwright, here are a couple of his performances:

Hallelujah:

Going to a Town:

One Man Guy:

The Maker Makes:

The first video, "Hallelujah" was written by Leonard Cohen and performed by Rufus. The other three "Going to a Town," "One Man Guy," and "The Maker Makes" are written and performed by Rufus. "Going to a Town" is his commentary on the Bush administration. A talented pianist, Rufus usually accompanies himself on the piano during his performancies.

Wainwright's music is in an entirely different universe than Beyonce's. Rufus has been commissioned to write an opera for the New York Metropolitan Opera. He is writing the music and the libretto himself. He is writing the libretto in French, which I presume he speaks fluently as a result of growing up in Canada. It is hard to imagine Beyonce Knowles writing an opera for the Metropolitan!

I suspect Wainwright's music might be more popular if he wasn't so obviously gay-acting on stage. (That's not a complaint - just an observation). He is fond of making risque and even lewd gay references on stage, such as once relating how he asked a date to "rim" him, etc. I suspect most of his audiences would prefer he leave out details that graphic.

The music business is tanking because of employees like Beyonce. Rufus is one of the few, very few artists in the business who's sales are up over the last album.

I'm sorry the music industry is being kept alive because of artist like Beyonce`, artist who sale out arena's and goes platinum. Not to insult Rufus but please he's not getting Beyonce` numbers and you know it.

So just because Rufus is an artist, he's not allowed to speak freely about what he likes and doesn't like?

I guess not. People I know, and people on this board, and many others say the same thing about Beyonce all the time. I guess you're not allowed to say it in a magazine.

Oh lord. This is turning into a blood bath.

Not really. I have yet to see an intelligent refutation on either side, let alone a coherent understanding of art and why Rufus' music could be quantitatively better than Beyonce's. Oh well.

I suspect you meant qualitatively better. I don't think there's an argument that Beyonce's music is present in greater quantity than Rufus's.

Because there is really no objective way to evaluate music, there can never be any "intelligent refutation on either side". All you will ever get is some people's opinions. A lot of sophisticated music people claim Verdi was a better composer then Puccini. But do I really care what other people think (or even if that claim is true) when I'm listing to a great performance of "O Mio Bambino Caro?"

It's actually pretty common for musicians to diss one another. There is a large underground world of unpublished songs of artists "attacking" each other in music, such as Eminem vs Britney Spears, Eminem vs Mariah Carey, etc. I have always regarded it as "trash talk", like athletes on the field or WWE wrestlers. I'm not sure how much the artists really mean it (I suspect there's always a tiny grain of truth there), but it adds to the fun!

Oh, I wouldn't take any of it too seriously. ;)

We all know that Beyonce doesn't have that much of a voice and her popularity is waning. :p

Isn't she fervently religious?

Yes sir. Poppin' that coochie for Jesus.

Spin: Are you sick of cult success?

Rufus Wainwright: I wouldn’t say that I’m sick of it. I go to the opera three times a week, I hang around in my bathrobe reading Susan Sontag, and I get foot massages from my German boyfriend - I’m going to be fine. That being said, I want to be part of culture. I’m scared of what young people are being force-fed. I’m sick of trash culture.

Anything specifically?

I’m really sick of Beyonce. All of her songs are formulaic and produced in a way that’s utterly mesmerizing in the basest way. There’s no enlightenment. Like most mainstream pop these days, it’s more of a scientific experiment than an artistic experience. But hey, it’s your life, you know?

He is making a very valid point..

As far as what he said, it's just his opinion and he's entitled to it. I just find it odd how he has stated multiple times in the past, including I believe in that same interview that he slammed Beyonce, his adoration for Britney Spears. I don't understand his selective self-righteousness.

Ok... I'm going to become an obscure artist who makes unpopular music that no one buys. Then, for some reason, I have the right to then trash more successful and arguably more talented music artists just because their music is played on the radio and my music isn't.

It's a sad case of jealousy. It's the kick the person at the top type of mentality. You know a lot of people hate Donald Trump just because he's rich. Insecure people like to forget that Donald earned his accolades.

Rufus (who) fell victim to this.

Why cant he have an opinion? I know plenty of people who feel the same way and he is not the only artist to have similar views on music today.

That's your interpretation of his comments. And one that doesn't make sense.

No, I meant quantitatively, as in you can quantify what makes music good. What you like or dislike about something has little to do with your correct thinking. Beyonce does not make quality music. Her producers do.

Methinks Rufus would love to have a piece of Beyonce's "waning" popularity. It would still be more than he's ever been able to grab for himself with his music. :p

What's funny about this whole thing is that Rufus had slight Beyonce in order to get this many people talking about him.

That's assuming he makes music for the purpose of gaining popularity.

But Rufus writes his own music and lyrics and I really do believe he is more talented. That, and the fact that he is openly gay. :p
Beyonce is a hypocrite. She is religious and still gets on stage and on tv looking like a whore. I would be surprised also if she actually plays an instrument or writes anything. She sells because of her image and the talents of "other" people.

That is very true... very true.

She makes me sick too with her ditsy act (maybe it isn't an act).

I do think she is more talented than a lot of people give her credit for.

its one thing to have an opinion but it's another to bash a celebrity publically...nobody said he wasnt allowed to h ave an opinion
