Thad's Hockey Corner

You'll have a whole week-end in Buffalo. Yeah, if your reasons are good enough for you then they are good enough. Have a great time.

The KeyBank Center (formally the HSBC Arena), is a great place to watch a game. I remember when the Sabres played at the Aud In Buffalo. Of course, that's when the Sabres had the "French Connection Line" (Rick Martin, Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert).

Enjoy the game!

I like lots of scoring. So I'm glad I came to Buffalo and saw the Sabres beat the Devils, 7-1

The first period ended with the Sabres holding a 5-0 lead. Poor Louis Domingue, Devils goalie. He wasn't at his best and I was surprised he stayed all the first period. The Devils put Mackenzie Blackwood into goal at the start of the second period. It helped - the Sabres only scored twice in the 2nd, and the Devils got a power play goal. No scoring at all in the third, but lots of good attempts.

It was "Founders Day" at the rink. December 2 was the 50th anniversary of Buffalo receiving an NHL franchise. The team has special golden anniversary jerseys this year with the logo in metallic gold. It's gaudy but looks good. And the Sabres were the white jerseys tonight; although that was the norm when I was a young fan, teams today generally wear colors at home and white on the road. Ah, nostalgia. The founding Knox family was honored (family members in attendance) and the video screens showed lots of memories.

I love Key Bank Center, the Sabres' home. It's the perfect size with great sightlines, easy access, good fans. It was designed by the same architects who did Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

And I like Buffalo. It's having its renaissance. But must it be so cold? 😨

And in front of the TV again...the Flyers lost to Minnesota 4-1. After a slow start the Wild is doing very well, especially at home.

I was flipping channels tonight. The Flyers beat Anaheim, and NBC Sports showed the Maple Leafs beating the Sabres.

I'm probably headed to Newark tomorrow to see the Ducks play the Devils. Tickets are dirt cheap, probably since neither team is doing well this season. I've seen both teams lose this season, although Anaheim lost by shootout in Arizona. The Devils lost in a 7-1 rout in Buffalo

Wednesday's Devils-Ducks game was the most ordinary hockey game I've seen this season. Devils won, 3-1, and it wasn't a bad game...just nothing special. A surprisingly good performance by Mackenzie Blackwood in the Devils' goal...but all the goals were earned on nice shots, none of the "What the heck was THAT?" type I saw on my trip last month.

I'm going to Nashville next week to see the Predators. So they fired their coach today.

OK, the connection there is tenuous.

But the Predators are underachieving this year. I'm listening to the NBC commentators, and even though I dislike Mike Milbury, he's making sense now. He feels there are overpaid Predators players not putting out effort. He's sure the goaltending will improve.

Almost All-Star break time! A lot of the traditional "have-nots" are doing quite well this season.

Some fun stuff during the Skills competition from shooting off platforms in stands to cameo appearances from past stars like Brett Hull, and Wayne Gretzky, who opened the event. Looked like the players were having fun.

True. Who thought up that Shooting Stars challenge? It was like Bingo, sheer luck mostly. But it sure was fun. And since I'm a Matt Barzal fan, it was fun seeing him win fastest skater.

My next game is in 10 days...the LA Kings in Washington Feb. 4

On the spur of the moment, I went to the Predators-Devils game tonight in Newark, NJ.

Both teams are in trouble...neither would make the playoffs if the season ended today. Nashville won in a shootout, 6-5.

It was certainly entertaining, but hardly a defensive battle. I don't think the Devils' goalie is quite ready for prime time. Nashville has two good goalies but has been giving up way too many goals. They won last night and tonight but gave up 9 goals across the two games. Their scoring this season hasn't been consistent enough to cover the defensive gap.

Prudential Center is a nice arena and the Devils drew a good crowd. But tickets on the secondary market were fairly cheap (that's why I went, partly)

Next Tuesday I'm going to Washington, DC to see the Capitals take on the Los Angeles Kings. The Caps are doing well. The Kings are not.

Hello from Capital One Arena in Washington! I like this building. It's big but has great sightlines and good presentation.

But the first period was missing...good hockey. The Capitals looked terrible. They had a power play opportunity and completely wasted it. They spent most of the period noodling around with the puck. In the midst of that, Jeff Carter of the Kings scored on a great shot that better defensive play would not have allowed.

Let's see if the Capitals step it up. Kings lead, 1-0 after one period.

The play was marginally better. The Capitals got one fairly organized play together and defenseman John Carlson put the puck in the net.

The Kings were more organized overall, though. They've outshot the Capitals 18-12 so far. Good goaltending tonight. Braden Holtby in goal has been fine for the Capitals, and Jonathan Quick has done the job when needed for the Kings.

1-1 tied after 2.

This is what I came for.

After Jeff Carter scored a go-ahead goal for the Kings, the Great 8 went to work. He got a natural hat trick. Yup, 3 goals in a row. The third was an empty-net goal, scored when the Kings pulled their goalie to try and score a tying goal with an extra attacker. Sometimes - like tonight - it just doesn't work.

Ovechkin was trying all night, and his appearances were the best thing about the Capitals' first two periods. But, oh. How sweet that his efforts paid off in the last half of the third period.

Final: Capitals 4, Kings 2.

I'm finally going to see my hometown Flyers this season. They play Winnipeg this Saturday in a day game.

I'm home from the Flyers game. They beat Winnipeg today, 4-2.

I wore my Jets hoodie and cap...besides the players, maybe 4 other people there wore any kind of Jets gear. Clearly not many Jets fans made the trip to Philadelphia. I was lonely.

The Flyers looked good. Scott Laughton scored the first two goals. He's having a breakout season. And the Flyers' young goalie, Carter Hart, did his job well

I can't explain why I don't go see the Flyers more. Tickets are on the expensive side, but not nearly in the range of the Rangers or Bruins. I like Wells Fargo Center.

Since I'll be working like mad until March, I'll probably only see TV games for a few weeks.

Look what the AHL Syracuse Crunch wore for their Pride Night. They're Tampa Bay's farm team. And I like Syracuse. Why wasn't I there?

I hate viruses.

I have tickets for two NHL games in March. With the "postponement" of the season as of today, that's in limbo.

Since one game is in Chicago - and I'm in Pennsylvania - I wonder if that game will ever be seen by me.

Since my tickets are bought on StubHub, the secondary market, I fully expect never to be refunded.

And from a less personal point of view...damn. This season has been exciting and unpredictable. I hope it gets to finish.

I hate the idea of the Stanley Cup playoffs in July.

I reluctantly admit health officials do have the public interest at heart.

Hockey's back.

So much is different. No fans. Only two arenas. And it's August...what?

But the NHL has found an expensive but effective work-around coronavirus. The games have been interesting. Nobody's health has been jeopardized. Having all games in Canada surely helps.

The mix of the expected and upsets has been great! Nobody expected Montreal to have any chance against Pittsburgh...but the Penguins have packed for home and the Canadiens will play Philadelphia. Although games are being played in Edmonton, the Oilers are done. And one opening-round series has gone to a fifth game, with Toronto and Columbus playing a deciding game tonight.

I'm living by my TV set (when I'm not working...somehow work has become more time-consuming this month).
