Just heard about it sonny,George was bigger than life and often would be fairly described as a villain but he was more than that, bigger than life and he did bring the Yankees back to being world champions.Especially when he started pulling back as the Yanks had their run with four titles and seven WS appearances Joe Torre at the helm, his image softened some and in recent years it was sad seeing George in such an obviously physically declined state. He was barely able to savor last season's record 27th world championship as much as it clearly meant to him.....so difficult seeing the Boss so weak and dependent even if he was very difficult to like a lot of times, even he said of himself that he could be unreasonable at times,he would have to catch himself.Another Yankee and baseball great loss at All Star time following the passing Sunday of Bob Sheppard, the longtime Yankee public address announcer at 99.

I loved the guy, I loved his temper tantrums and his passion for the game.
Some did say he was unreasonable but I called it an unwavering position on what he belived was right. He ran the team from his gut, he was The Boss and unfortunatly for baseball there probably won't ever be anoher one like him

As for the passing of Bob Sheppard and George Steinbrenner, it's always sad when a giant of any industry died. Sheppard was also the voice of the NY Giants football team. I was at Yankee Stadium last month and remarked to my friend that it's the first time I'm at a Yankee home game without Bob Sheppard announcing the lineup. I've been going to NY games since about 1960. The Boss was always an interesting if not obnoxious individual, who did a damn good job running his team. Sometimes he micromanaged too much and interfered when he shouldn't have, but the results speak for themselves. The team usually did better the less he was involved in day to day stuff, as in the last several years. They'll both be missed by baseball.

Thank you Brian McCann!!! (!)

C'mon NL! :=D:

and I agree with everyone, as well as Razorz's sentence that sums it up: "Baseball lost two icons."

(and I'm watching the game right now in your hood too, Razorz ;) )

Actually glad to see an NL victory after what,15 years?Fucking Big Papi thinking he's Jacob Ellsbury...great reaction by NL right fielder Marlon Byrd to take the ball off a hop and fire to second, easily nailing Big Papi for the seond out.Glad that I got home from work in time to catch the last half inning, though I really would have rather worked my usual earlier shift and watch the whole festivities!:(

Abs,not talking specificallyAll Star game but I had hop[ed the Mets would have picked up Matt Holliday over Jason Bay because he is a much more consistent hitter.Sure he fucked up in the playoffs last year having a ball bounce off his abdomen, but after a slow start he has ripped the cover off of the ball....if St.Louis only had some reliable top of the order guys. What's happened to Skip Schumacker this year?

Thanks syam for your perspective on George Steinbrenner. And Razor, that you had to become a Nats fan beause of what Angelos was doing to the O's....he's got to be one of the worst owners in pro sports, never mind just baseball...that franchise used to be one of the most competitive in the East every year. They're just sad now, though they play in a beautiful ballpark...with that iconic railroad warehouse just behind it still one of the best in baseball.Yep,George was a sumbitch but at least he was a winner sumbitch and love him or hate him or the Yankees,he was an original like Bill Veeck,Charlie Finley and football's Al Davis, they don't come around too often but stamp their will on the game, for good and bad.

That was awesome; finally for the first time since 1996 the National League won the All-Star Game.
Generally, especially now while the Mets are in a race with them, I do not get excited over anything good the Braves do. But yesterday you had to put all that behind you and for just one day root for the All Stars including our rivals. That said I have to give a shout out to Brian McCann hitting that bases clearing double giving the NL the lead, 3-1, and they never turned back. Brian deservedly, won the MVP award.
Now it’s back to baseball and as a Mets fan lemme say to the Braves, we’re on!

Abs, I hope you enjoy Nationals Park if/when you go! I have to admit, the food there isn't that great, but I might have a couple recommendations if you'd like. I just went to Safeco Field, and I'm kind of jealous of Mariners fans now. XD

I wish that I could have made it to Nationals Park! I was in Leesburg, VA (what a crap town that turned out to be) but it was only 15 mins from Dulles, so I consider it your hood ;)

You should come to STL and go to Busch Stadium so you can be jealous of the Cards! (!)

God, I hope we sweep the Dodgers...

Ugh, Leesburg is hardly in my 'hood. Hardly anything in NoVA is. That is indeed a shit town. You should have stayed in D.C.
Thought Northern Virginia was the "progressive" part of the state...which allowed for Obama to win there in 2008.And Southern and Western Virginia were the "Deliverance" parts where no civilized man or woman would show themselves lest never to be heard from again!;)

Well,Abs...Cards did it and swept LA!As it is in heaven, and wherever Abs is wandering today,it shall be done!!!:p

THere were some bad meltdowns by bullpens on Sunday, Chisox, Dodgers, Mets to name a few. There are very few lockdown closers, Mariano Rivera is in a class by himself. It should be a wild finish to several races this summer, lots of close races, not to mention wild card possibilities. Baseball is heating up!! Oh, Lets' go Mets!!

Glad you didn't forget the last part, syam!;)

Seven wins for the Cards in a row....at least they are beating up on the Phillies now,or Mets fans would really be depressed! The bad news....guess who our Mets must first face when they come back home next Tuesday....you guessed it,the Cards!:help::cry:

They've got a foundation....Chris Carpenter,Adam Wainwright on the starting staff....Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday the heart of the order(Mets messed up BIG time picking Bay over trying to get Holliday in the offseason.Holliday hit great going back to the NL last year after he was traded from Oakland)Of course old reliable, manager Tony La Russa as well. You get close to what you expect from them most years, when with the Mets there is always some setback or heartbreak. They are just about ALWAYS in the hunt. The Mets just want to make me puke right now.

SO funny mention that Sausy

I thought about you and sonny tonight whilst we were beating the shit outta the Phillies. I love when the Cards beat the shit outta the Phillies (well, anyone for that matter, especially the Cubs) but it's kinda like we've finally found our stride after the All Star Break. Thank god, because I know this club is better than what they've been playing the first half of the season...

If we, after sweeping the stupid Dodgers, can continue to roll and possibly sweep the Phillies, I would expect us to lose at least one (hopefully no more) to Chicago this weekend. You know you can all see that shit on Fox this weekend I assume ;)

If we do win the series vs. the Phillies and subsequently vs. the Cubs this weekend, I would also be scared if I were a Mets fan. We are on fi-yah! :D

God I love baseball...and the sweep of the Dodgers made me want to play with myself. *|*

I saw your post hoping for a sweep over the Dodgers, think that was the first night...but when I noticed it was a four game series, thought you were getting a little greedy,Abs.They did slump a little going into the break, think they were 50-41 or something, had been in a little ragged streak.

Apparently not anymore!:p

Yea,I think you'll be feeling just a teensy bit sorry for sonny and me next week..it'll pass,of course:lol:But the way the Mets are going now,I ain't gonna brag on anything....they've got to get serious when the play you guys, cause if they lose like this at home....uh oh!:help::cry:Like you said, your guys are on fi-yah!

LOL,I know the Cards ain't going to let the news of Cubs manager Lou Piniella to retire after this season move em one bit except to make sure it's a weekend that Cubs fans will never forget, and ouch, not in a good way!

Oh, I'm a greedy little whore. I'll take a win any day of the week! :D

If the birds on the bat ain't playing the [STRIKE]pond scum[/STRIKE] Mets, then I'll root for you guys....but I still gotta admit that Beltran striking out in '06 vs Wainwright in the NLCS was some of the craziest slash best baseball I've ever seen - and I went batshit all over the place ;)

I kinda like Lou's crazy ass. But, I wish absolutely nothing but the worst for the Cubs. So I'm kinda conflicted in that department ;)

I love seeing Abs in baseball nirvana over your beloved Cards..|...If your guys aren't gentle with us next week,I'll get over it,sure sonny would as well!;)And you ain't seen pond scum like New York area pond scum...that you can take to the bank!:p

Anyway,I've got work in less than six hours and I've got to go to sleepyland and dream of Mets wins:Dbut then again,I'll dream more Met nightmares in living color!

Good night,Abs!

8 in a row! (!)

Screw you Phillies!

(still love ya Scrub)

;)

Aw,ya know Scrub loves the rivalry!:p

Right now the Mets are in extra innings, and despite two home runs tonight,by Angel Pagan and Rod Barajas and an early RBI single by Carlos Beltran,Mets were held in check by Dan Haren and the Arizona relief staff, who look now like All Stars where before the Mets arrived were awful.Coincidence?I think not!Of all people the Mets have been handcuffed the past couple of innings by Aaron Friggin' Heilman!:grrr:

Jonathan Niese is going to be a real good top flight starter and tonight he wasn't sharp, gave up three homers but battled over six.But the way the Mets are playing now they could put Cy Young himself out there he would have to struggle for a "W".David Wright is skidding and striking out again after actually getting into the MVP conversation with a torrid June. But you have to play July,August and September to get to the postseason and he has to really get going again for our boys to have a chance,Jason Bay doesn't look like he will be contributing much for the foreseeable future and Ike Davis is too young to have the pressure fall on him.

Cards are going so well I just don't know how the Mets will do anything with them if they falter in Los Angeles against the Dodgers this weekend. Now permit me to go into a quiet corner and assume the fetal position for awhile!

I loved seeing those Phillies go down (careful Abs)
Too bad the Mets could not take advantage and gain some ground in the NL East
Speaking of Scrub, where is she? hiding under her bed again ?
I do feel bad for any Phillies fan right now as there team disentergrates right befroe their eyes. Welcome to the world of a Met's fan :(

We might do okl against the Dodgers but let's be real, the Cards will eat us for lunch and spit us out. :help:

The Mets are a mess and whoda thought it would be because of the offense instead of pitching.
I think saucy and I both need this (*8*)

I don't know why we play like shit at Wrigley whenever we play the Cubs.

I fucking hate the Cubs more than anything

Hopefully Carp can pitch a win tomorrow and avoid the sweep!
