Of course, this is not Aretha, so it's all what Donald Trump would call "fake news."

Yes, and my point was that Donald Trump would read this and proclaim it "fake news." In other words, missing the point by misreading the print.

This is so lovely and funny. Thank you for bumping. How did I miss this? lol. Nick and Remy have nothing on Aretha.

we are preparing to lose the [other] queen, Aretha is on her way home

she's been dodging rumors about her health for years, denying talk about cancer but in the past it's always been from third-party "a person who knows a person who knows a person who knows her band member's barber said....," now it's being reported on mainstream sites with quotes from her team that the queen of soul is in Detroit on hospice and is gravely ill.

for those of you who have been living under a rock Aretha Franklin is rnb and gospel royalty, quite literally, her father Rev CL Franklin marched with Martin Luther King and a performance at his church as a teenager launched Aretha's voice into the stratosphere, a career that would span several decades and multiple genres. One of her most signature songs was an Otis Redding cover [though if you ask most people they'd call it her song, even redding said so himself] called "Respect" that was an anthem not only for women during a period of liberation but also a civil rights anthem at the height of racial turmoil in the US.

and nobody's got accolades like aretha's got accolades. she has a star on the hollywood walk of fame, her voice was declared a Michigan "natural resource" in the eighties, first woman inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame, recipient of a Grammy legend award, I could go on for days, grammy lifetime achievement award, kennedy center honoree, national medal of arts, presidential medal of freedom, honorary degrees from harvard, berklee, brown, yale, university of michigan, princeton, and any music industry award you can name.

personally I have always had a strong connection to aretha's music, especially her heartbreak songs, there are certain riffs that I will rewind to listen to over and over and over again, the conviction with which she sung is almost unparalleled, she certainly has no peers in contemporary music who could do what she did.

so ladies, looks like we've just got Chaka and Patti left.

sad but it's great to be a legend in life and will be in death---loved her young voice period---:=D:

It's sad but life. She is a great singer and will be missed.

in recent years I saw a clip of a street in detroit being named after her, she started crying and I got the feeling that it wasn't just the beauty of the moment but also that she knew her sun was beginning to set, I believe she's been lying in past years about the state of her health. either way it was a bittersweet moment and since so many colossal talents and instrumental artists never get their recognition it's gratifying that a black woman could be so decorated and honored for her contributions to the arts. it will be a long, long time before we are able to enjoy a talent of her caliber. helluva keyboardist and songwriter as well, a lotta people don't know that.

classic aretha performance, when Pavorotti fell ill just before his grammy performance aretha stepped in and learned the italian aria nessun dorma in 8 minutes... and sang it in pavorotti's tenor key, not the most noteworthy performance in the world of opera but still a stunning moment especially considering it was thrown together at the last minute.

edit ok it's been pulled from youtube, still an interesting factoid

Re: we are preparing to lose the [other] queen, Aretha is on her way home

Like Aretha, my mom had 4 boys. I remember my mom bustin' a move to Chain of Fools. It was infectious and is vivid in my heart. My mom was from Chicago and would always point out that Aretha was a waitress in a Blues Brothers walk on part. I'd love to take this opportunity to thank my mom for the dancing lessons, god rest her soul, to thank Aretha for her inspiration, and I thank god for the both of them.

Never really liked her but hopefully she's had a nice life and the journey out won't be too painful.

Heaven's gain, our loss.

We were lucky to have walked the same time as she did to share her gifts.
