I can't figure out what Mariah was thinking with "Rainbow"....I can't believe this album went 3x platinum.

Of course it did. It had 2 #1 singles and tons of promotion. It also had a lot of controversy because Sony refused to promote it after it's first single because it was to be the final Sony album (with the exclusion of the Greatest Hits). She rushed the record on purpose, and, yeah, so coming off of the massive success of Butterfly, I'm not shocked it sold what it did.

Butterfly is, IMO, definately her best album ever. It's the only only album of hers where I feel there cohesivenss (sp)...sorrry itf there«s spelling mistakes...pretty drunk right now...making a big effort to writet the posts. abAH~!!!

I didn't think "Did I Do That" had all that weird of a sound. It actually sounded like a lot of other crap out at the time. You could virtually hear the producers tweaking around with an already established sound to make it sound slightly different. It was definitely wise for them not to release it as a single.

"Crybaby" was nothing special in the vocals department. I could imagine Rihanna singing it, honestly. I've heard Mariah sing songs with more impressive structure than that without having to go into high pitch mode at all. "Crybaby" will definitely be a forgotten single in her discography. Well, it already is...
I really had no idea that it was even ever a single.

Oooooooooooooooooooh yeah, I remember "Did I Do That." At the time, the Master P sound was really hot and that track was clearly a sample of Silkk The Shocker and Mystikal's "It Ain't My Fault."

Crybaby, another sample, was catchy and it was a wise choice to release it as a single. However, like you said, it is forgettable. I liked the histrionics at the end, but that's about it. There's nothing impressive about the song at all.

I voted 'Rainbow'. I think it has a few good songs but it just feels....odd to listen to. I can't explain it. I mean, every Mariah album has it's moment to me but 'Rainbow' as a whole just fell flat to me.

OK, I'll admit that after listen through the song "Bliss" from the Rainbow album a few times I think it's very good. Probably her sexiest song ever, if nothing else.

I would have loved to hear her perform that song live. I highly doubt she could do it now, but that was one of my favorite songs from Rainbow as well.

We should give some credit for the songwriting, and the ballads.. bought the latest Ballads CD and she could not sing half of them now to save her live... let's face it, Vision of Love Era is done, and she got hand off to JayZ, but least she sings better than J.lo and Madonna.. And face it the ballads now are whispery until the end aka Dont forget about us, and I stay in love until the end.. The power is gone, and here is the ghoetto M!

I'll always love Mariah. I can't think of a single modern artist's voice I'd rather listen to. There isn't much competition today, though, because all you need is a Disney Princess, paper thin voice to get on the radio. It's always either that or some crappy rappers talking at you like they have something worthwhile to say.

Why is it that I find myself agreeing with you a lot lately. Anyway, that be the truth, except for the fact that you forgot about the teenage boy(s) on the radio appealing to prepubescent girls who become closer to a state of dementia everytime they see hear their beloved boys.

How many threads will we have on this? Yes, we all agree. Mariah does not sound the same. But she's still my girl. I'd rather listen to her 'whisper' singing than most of these other bitches sing.

Yes it seems like she lost some power. I like some of her older songs, but lately I don't get impressed that much - coupled to the fact she seems to have an overall annoying attitude in real life.

Mariah is grossly overrated.

Take Whitney Houston, Taylor Dayne, Britney Spears, pseudo-Teena Marie, pseudo-Mary J. Blige...mix it all together with a couple of dog turds, and you have Mariah. Nothing about the woman is original.

Yeah, her voice is shot today...but even if she could still sing like she did in 1992, I still wouldn't like her.

I agree. Add Minnie Ripperton in there too. But Mariah was a Whitney Houston knock-off from the start. Tommy Mottola modeled Mariah and her songs after Whitney after seeing the incredibly massive success Clive Davis had with Whitney.

That's why I think she doesn't get that much love and respect in the industry. If you notice when she performs at award shows or anywhere else, she almost NEVER gets a standing ovation from her peers...

That says a lot to me.

Why are you saying that Disney princesses have weak vocals - Jodi Benson's Ariel was not weak. It's not pop or mainstream but it's not weak.
Unless of course you mean Disney princess as people like Miley Cyrus and Hilary Duff etc?
One thing I've noticed about Mariah is her strange movements, she sort of floats and her head never moves, like her neck doesn't turn. Has anyone else noticed?

Bullsh!t. Tommy modeled Mariah and her songs after the formula Clive Davis used for Whitney Houston. And you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Her first album screamed Whitney Houston. And when "Vision Of Love" came out, a lot of people thought it was a new song by Whitney Houston at first. Mariah was still an unknown at the time and Whitney was really the only female singer out who had a powerhouse voice like that who was hitting crazy high notes and doing all those fancy runs like that, so alot of people jus assumed it was Whitney. She's the one who started and popularized that type of singing.

That Mariah back then wasn't the "real" Mariah anyway. Tommy had her covered up and classy like Whitney was. Singing Whitney-type songs. The "real" Mariah is the Mariah of today who likes to dress like a hoochie while singing more urban music with rappers. Why do you think she changed after leaving him? She started being her "real" self. Tommy had her singing POP diddys like Whitney Houston was.

And Whitney Houston ALWAYS gets her standing ovation, champ. Even when she sounds like sh!t, she still gets her standing ovation. And that's just out of respect that people in the industry have for the woman. She's a legend, they show her respect. She gets her standing ovation just from making an appearance on stage. Watch the BET Honors next Monday and watch her get her standing ovation from all her peers in the room. Whitney and standing ovation go hand-in-hand.
