Those silly pro-High Fructose Corn Syrup commercials are back

I'm kinda scared to spice up my food now with all this talk about MSG. I didn't know about it D: Is it very common in a lot of spices or just certain types?

if you buy spices by name... "Oregano" or "Cumin" or "Star Anise" you're most likely fine. If you buy "Cajun Spices" or "Barbecue seasoning" or "21 Spice blend" then you're about 100% likely to be getting MSG.

If you buy something like "Liquid smoke" or most Soy Sauces, you're getting it there, too.

Most processed cheeses, especially things like "Hot and Spicy" or "smoked" cheese unless it's actually real cheese.

Any cold cuts are assured to have it unless you get it at a place like Whole Foods.

Is it really that bad for you though if you have it in moderation? I don't eat many sweets but I eat cereal all the time and drink soda a couple times a week.

I think if you have a diet with lots of HFCS then it's going to effect you drastically depending on your body type but I haven't completely cut it out of my diet and I'm OK.

I think everything in moderation is OK as long as you are active and don't go nuts.

I'm still going to eat ketchup and other stuff with HFCS and drink a soda every now and then.

Ah, but moderation on HFCS doesn't exist if you consume many items on the supermarket shelves these days. If you make yourself a sandwich, it's in the bread. If you have a soda with your sandwich, it's in the soda. If you have a small dessert...well, you get the picture.

I've never seen it in any bread I've bough.... it's possible to avoid completely if you try hard enough but that would mean giving up lots of my favorite drinks or snacks.

You know, I'm sure HFCS is bad for you but I don't know if it's as bad as Jasun is making it out to be. Of course though if you go overboard with it, yes it is but I've read tons of health articles that say that milk and all meat products are bad for you as well which isn't exactly true. I really do believe it's all about moderation.

Thanks I read the becomehealthynow link and MSG is in almost everything I eat. I don't actually know if I ever had any of the side effects of it though. I even had Parmesan cheese today. I guess there really is not way to get away from it. Some of the things I can't resist.

Many people believe msg is bad for you. I don't. Before you worry too much, I think you should read more. Here's an article to look at which offers a different perspective:

Yum!

Ok except it's not in non-processed foods.

If you like "Parmesan cheese," why not go to a real cheese shop, buy a big hunk of parmegeano and grate it yourself? It'll taste better and won't be full of the shit that Kraft puts in their ... um... "cheese flavored, food-like products."

you're funny.

That hack piece is just so absurd it's scary that there are people who fall for it. Pretty much like the commercials we're talking about.

More expensive and time consuming.

Regarding HFCS in breads, that's one food product that shouldn't be much cause for concern. The sugars that are included in most breads aren't there for sweetening purposes; they're there to feed the yeast. Most of the sugar is consumed by the yeast during the fermentation process, and very little remains in the finished product.

My understanding is that HFCS can't be consumed by the yeast because it's not... well, sugar.. it's just poison that tastes sweet. Like Anti Freeze.

Meh. I shop at stores like Whole Foods that don't sell that odd powdered substance Americans call "Parmesan cheese." I buy it in blocks and grate it as I need it right onto my food. I guess if you're always in such a hurry that grating a little cheese isn't possible, you'll just have to deal with eating stuff that will slowly kill you.

I generally get up early, make my own breakfast (I also crack my own eggs and make real oat meal, real coffee and squeeze juice I pick from the tree in my back yard) and I feel a FUCK of a lot better than I did when I'd stop by 711 and grab a sausage biscuit and nuke it in the store. I'm also a lot healthier, have more energy, sleep better, look better...

What price do you put on your health?

It's the American way....

Wow, I don't remember hearing about this MSG stuff before.

Last year in Sept. I was visiting family and one of my cousins gave me a chicken sandwich. She poured lots of barbecue sauce on the chicken and I don't really ever eat barbecue sauce. Right after I was done with the sandwich the inside of my ears started pulsing. First it was just uncomfortable then it got a little painful. I didn't know what to do so I just went to the bathroom and thought I could cool off my ears with cold water. It did stop, but I still don't know why that happened. I'm not sure if it might have been MSG in the barbecue sauce, but I'm sure I'm not going to eat those barbecue chicken sandwiches anymore.

I shop at my co-op, and I get pre-grated organic cheese. Just as convenient as Kraft, though somewhat more expensive. But then, the cheese from my co-op actually looks and tastes like grated cheese, not clumpy talc.

And my co-op stopped carrying all products with HFCS a couple of years ago, so it's pretty easy for me to avoid.

I bet it tastes a lot better, too.

My Peeve Is Those So-call "Healthy" Products That Use This Stuff! Yogurts, Salad Dressings, Sports Drinks, Waters...

I'm constantly looking at labels, and I avoid it wherever possible. I consider it "the great Satan" of common/popular food ingredients.

Interestingly, I notice that even within a particular brand name, the use of HFCS is inconsistent. For example, Dannon Yogurt - the french vanilla flavor uses sugar but the fruit-on-the-bottom varieties are loaded with HFCS. Who knew?

And don't be drawn in by brand names either. I'm not sure of the brand, but I think it was Healthy Choice - it was one of those brands which sound REALLY, REALLY GREAT - but their whole grain bread has HFCS as the SECOND ingregient! Ouch! Another brand of whole-grain bread in the same area doesn't list HFCS at all.

And, most definitely, salad dressings are VERY commonly just LOADED with this shit. I usually buy Annie's Original brand but I have to travel considerably out of town to find it. No HFCS (or, for that matter, anything else really unhealthy) listed in their ingredients!

If you've ever wondered why so many younger children are morbidly obese, take a look at the amount of soda they consume.

If you wonder why so many are behaviorally out of control take a look at their msg intake.

I can't believe that the world is okay with poisoning children this way.

If more and more of us, as I have done, would quit buying any product with HFCS, then it would soon not even be an option...

They actually DO make lubes with all-natural ingredients. You can order them online.

As someone who knows StationToStation well, I can assure you he knows all about those lubes, and every other product on this planet, and its ingredients.....
