• Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Those silly pro-High Fructose Corn Syrup commercials are back

Uh........ yeah...........and there are other scientists looking who are looking at vaccines and msg as possible factors in autism, given the explosive growth in cases in the last 40 years.

Remember how long it took to get the link between smoking and cancer researched and taken seriously? ...and how many researchers and writers were discredited along the way...........

Read up on msg.

It actually can become addictive, particularly msg, because it is an excitotoxin.

MSG? I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and the fridge. MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper...

The Hostess Doritos ??

I refuse to get flu vaccines, and many others. I don't choose conventional medicine because it does condone this revolving door of eating sickly, unhealthy food to then pump one's body full of meds. let's call it the fast food-medical industrial complex.

The vaccines thing is bullshit.

Can you back this up with some proof ?

I don't know, if I had little kids I'd have to think long and hard about getting them vaccinated. I sure as hell don't trust the FDA, and the CDC is not much better...

Something is responsible for the alarming rise in autism, and I really don't think it's MSG.

Yes, something is responsible for the rise in autism.

It is called "Better recognition of the disease".

Vaccines get a lot of bad rep these days. But without them, we'd still be struggling with diseases like Smallpox or Polio.

Note that Polio is still endemic in certain parts of the world (e.g. Nigeria, Afghanistan). Try telling the parents there that they shouldn't get their kids vaccinated against Polio because it MIGHT make their kids autistic.

The correlation between MSG and autism still need a long way to go, although there is a strong positive correlation between both. About being an excitotoxin, MSG contains a strong excitatory substance, which is glutamate, and therefore can cause serious electrical imbalance in the brain. But since MSG does not readily enter the brain, the effect on brain is minimal (except on elderly and young children, whose brain is easier to be infiltrated). However, that doesn't mean MSG is safe on healthy young people, since it damages the organ and causes several clinical threats, such as obesity, heart diseases, and cancer.

Vaccines, on the other hand, may or may not provoke autism. Some cases, especially live vaccines, can cause these or even exacerbate the disease it was intended to prevent, but only in a small number of cases (most of them are immunodeficient people). This risk is greatly outweighted by the advantages vaccines offers. Thus if it were given carefully, vaccines are proven to be safe.

Now about the the additive yet dangerous substances in food...the main booster is not only about the cost of the food, but more to the efficiency of time. People are getting busier and busier nowadays and to most of them, preparing homemade food are time-consuming and bothersome. They seek for instant food, which are ready all the time and doesn't need much time to be prepared. For example, to make a soup, you must prepare and boil stuff, prepare the stock, and then freeze it when there are leftovers. But with a canned soup, you can cook for only yourself by simply opening the can and cook it for a matter of minutes. The same thing applies to the usage of MSG, HFCS, artificial colourings, etc. Hence the ones which need to be changed is not only the substances, but also the people who utilise these substances (which has proven to be a difficult task since MOST people are too lazy to get out of the snare).

Statements like these truly upset me. Vaccination has saved millions upon millions of lives, and almost totally eradicated several globally-destructive diseases. It's so easy for us, in our rich and comfortable modern lives, to forget that, not so long ago, families used to have ten kids because five of them would usually die before they were adults, from flu, measles, chicken pox, small pox, polio, etc etc.

The modern anti-vaccination movement isn't just harmful to those who don't get vaccinated. Non-vaccination allows diseases to re-propagate, spread and continue. When you refuse vaccination, you endanger your entire community.

A silver tongue has always been an asset to the successful quack. With "excitotoxin" I think they've coined poetry. It makes me giggle.

^Salt,too....but that is another topic in itself!

It's not fine in moderation and too much cabbage doesn't cause obesity, diabetes and liver failure.

I think that what he's trying to say is that, if you eat only cabbage, you'll become sick due to malnutrition. Your reading comprehension leaves a lot to be desired - and English is not even my first language.

Yes, and *I* am trying to say that even having HFCS "in moderation" will make you fat, unhealthy and possibly dead. Nobody said anything about eating "only" high fructose corn syrup.

I know you're desperate to find some angle to attack me (because you're kinda bitter, sad and lame) but really, debating isn't your strong point.

Um... aside from putting your personal short-comings and issues on display.. what IS your strong point?

Someone who only reads comic books apparently and moves their lips when they read them.

Giggle all you want. You and d'duder appear to be a perfect intellectual match.

For all the negative publicity it's had, why is Ac'cent still on the market?

Why can you still buy cigarettes?

You may disagree with my position (please do) but simply calling me dumb does very little to advance your own. In any case if you are going to craft insults including a predicate will make a grander flourish.

Cry me a river. It's not my fault that you can't even graps properly the meaning of sentences in your native tongue. He said that if you eat only cabbage, you won't be healthy either. His statement was pretty straight-forward.

And you are accusing me of being bitter and lame? You suck at sarcasm, but you've found a new way of being humorous.:D

And I don't attack you. Get real. I just find your Big Bad Internet persona hilarious as people like you are usually compensating for humiliating experiences in real life. I pointed this out to you in another thread and you went on a hissy fit to end all hissy fits, which confirmed that my charges are true, I really think you should start acting like the middle aged man that you are and not like some catty junior high girl. Maybe this should be your resolution for this year? As for me exposing my short-comings, I could never match you in that category: that is the one area where you have an edge over me.:-)

What's so bad about salt?
In itself,nothing....in how much is used in commercial products,a lot. It's essential in our diets,BUT supposed to consume no more than around 2,300 millligrams a day.1,500-2,000 may even be preferable for a lot of people. In the foods in supermarkets and in restaurants, you'll get way too much added sodium.Hypertension and the complications arising from it,heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage...it's expensive for all that added taste.

I work in a supermarket...I read labels. There is salt added to stuff you wouldn't think about being salty....300 mg in many cereals. Two slices of bread as well...so you pile on cold cuts and a simple sandwich can have 1,000mg of salt which is nearly half the daily suggested serving amount.

All this anti-MSG stuff is funny.

Just so you know, there is another large body of actual scientific research (not speculative citizens that think they are getting a headache) that has a different take on the subject.

It's popular to jump on the bandwagon with the most people-- ala global warming. That doesn't mean you're right though. (Note: I'm not making any comments about global warming being correct or incorrect, just bringing it up as an example)

Maybe you are right, but I have a different opinion. Know that they are out there :)

Oh God.... Another high volume poster alter-ego avatar appearing to take up the cause of living better chemically...and poohpooh global warming to boot.

What is it with `members`who hardly ever post on any other thread always rushing to the defense of the contrarians.

Doesn`t it get confusing though, trying to decide which nom de plume to use?

It's not my fault that you can't even graps properly the meaning of sentences in your native tongue.

Sometimes the comedy just writes itself.
