the meaningless Greece v Spain game.

This proved to be a very entertaining game.

The Spaniards were forced to earn their money, by a Greek team that at long last displayed some worthwhile football.

Better too late, than never.

Now it gets interesting!

Will Portugal beat Germany tonite?

Virtually everyone watching here in the UK will be supporting Portugal. But Germany have a habit of winning crucial games like this.

Germany are going play upon the insecurities and nervousness of Portugal.

As usual, watch the officials. UEFA wants huge TV audiences for the remainder of Euro2008.

The population of Germany is circa 82 million.

The population of Portugal is circa 10 million.

greaves is pretty sure Germany will go thru' to the next round.

Pity for Portugal.

I wonder how this result will affect Ronaldo's negotiations with Man Utd and Real? Will he be in a stronger, or weaker position?

a game how it should be. greate moves on both sides, and very thrilling til the last minute. i consider soccer often very boring, but tonight even i was cheering and crossing fingers. and now .. there is party in the streets here. too bad i have to work tomorrow :-/

It was quite a nice game and the festivities in my hometown were so frequented by celebrating people that a large contingent of police officers had to be dispatched to keep the streets clear for tram and bus services ;)

Congratulation, Germany.
I still wonder how did they do that. What a wonderful match! No matter what Portugal played their diversified tactics, Germany always stayed calm.
Good match, good goals!

And tonite we have Croatia v Turkey.

If you have a sofa, prepare to hide behind it!!!

Fortunately, we do not have a "top English referee" officiating this game, so there is a chance there will be some players from both sides still on the pitch at the end of of the game. ;)

It's going to be rough, tough and completely unpredictable.

Most people in England want Croatia to win, as it was Croatia who denied England a place in EURO2008. Reflected glory etc...

But greaves is a pragmatist, a cynic. The population of Turkey is 71 million. The population of Croatia is under 5 million.

UEFA know that if Turkey win tonite, it will draw in a huge TV audience from Asian countries for the later stages of the tournament.

So watch the officials - all Italian - and if you have money to spare, put it on Turkey.

Croatia was so close, only a few seconds away from the 1/2 finals.

It sucked that Modric had to miss that penalty, he was playing so well during the whole game, he sure is an excellent player...

I hate to see matches decided on PKs. :(

Was hoping Croatia would go through.

Two great teams. Wonderful entertainment. Life has its way of granting us another try. For Croatia to miss three penalty kicks, should encourage the team to improve their kicking from a fixed position.

So tonite we have Holland v Russia.

Every pundit and betting site will tell you that Holland are 2nd favourites - behind Germany - to win EURO 2008. And Russia are no-hopers.

The added spice is that Russia are coached by a Dutchman - Guus Hiddink.

greaves will continue to go with his population statistics calculator.

The population of Russia is circa 142 million.

The population of Holland is circa 16 million.

Russia to win.

What an exciting match!

Ruud van Goal works his magic... pulls a rabbit out of a hat to save Holland's collective butt!

Can van Persie do the same in extra time?

End game

What a great game by Russia today... and Holland... what happened? That's not the same team we watched in the first 3 games...

Congratulations to Russia, well deserved win today. Holland just didn't play well.
