What’s With Mindy’s White-Guy Obsession on ‘The Mindy Project’?

isn't that the joke? in no universe is she "ugly," but with her overly high self-esteem, she sees herself as a 10 while the guys around her are correctly pegging her as a 6.

That's interesting. Would you rate Aziz Ansari as a 6/10? Because he's more or less the male equivalent of Mindy Kaling.

And by straight male standards, I don't think Kaling is attractive. There are two threads about her on bodybuilding.com and all the guys are ripping her apart.

OMG Thank you for this thread

I'm an Indian-American gay man (same ethnicity as Mindy Kaling). Just like Mindy Kaling's parents, my parents immigrated to the US from India.

OMG, I have a White-Guy obsession too!! I wish White guys would notice me though. :( It's so frustrating!!! I know straight White guys who have told me before how hot & sexy they find Indian women..........but gay White guys only go for other gay White guys.....WHY!?! *%%*

White gay men never notice me..........they only go for White guys, or occasionally Latino or Asian guys. But never Indian guys.....

It's so annoying! White gay men love to talk about "diversity", "inclusion" etc etc, they move to diverse cities like NYC or San Francisco, but then all of their boyfriends are as white as they are.

Life is really hard being an Indian bottom!!

Oh god, it's like clockwork.

I agree that "ugly" was a bit of an over-exaggeration, though. Internet standards, lol.

When I turn on my TV, what I see is the consistent overrepresentation of black people, and the consistent underrepresentation of brown people.

I don't think television has an overrepresentation of black people. I do think it has a severe underrepresentation of other brown people, though, and a severe overrepresentation of white people. Take with grain of salt, because me seeing ethnicity is a bit difficult, but m'pretty damn sure I'm right. Color I can see, to an extent, but ethnicity not so much. I can usually (yes, only usually) tell when someone is white, though. I do however, live in the a city and it doesn't look remotely like those city shows on television. Way too damned many white people.

There's also the roles certain ethnicities tend to play on television. "Strong (read usually angry) black cop" is popular, and my there have been a lot of those lately. It generally doesn't lead to a depth of character.

Generic Chinese/Korean/Japanese Guy Who Knows Tech is another one-sided character. Ugh, there's whole lists. You can put most characters that ain't white on television into a box, it's sad. And doesn't say anything good of the media industry, either.

I've heard the opposite - lots of straight white guys saying that they aren't attracted to Indian women because they're usually darker skinned, with prominent noses and more body hair; pretty much the opposite of the blonde, busty Swedish girls that straight white guys usually put on a pedestal.

This is what typical Indian women in, say, Calcutta look like. They may not be 'blonde, busty Swedish' supermodels but most are still very pretty and feminine by global standards, esp compared to their plasticine neighbors in nose job capital Iran.

Someone on Dailymail commented that the last Miss America winner looked like most Indian women she personally knew, and someone replied with: "You're right, most Indian women (I have personally seen) DO look like her... slim, beautiful, natural hair, natural looks, no plastic surgery, and highly educated and accomplished." I completely agree. Anyway India has won Miss World 5 times so they're definitely known for being beautiful at some level.

Mindy might be ugly by Indian standards but by world standards definitely not. She should be applauded for owning her ethnic look and not getting plastic surgery, and managing to be successful despite her ethnic look. I'm sure plenty of guys would like her because of her personality.

Indian men are often very cute too, so I'm not sure what the other dude is complaining about. If you want fit guys you should probably try getting fit yourself. Just basic sense.

My point was that we can't use our daily experience to judge whether television is representative, because we all live in cities with different ethnic distributions. So if you used my part of the world as an example, for every hundred people on TV, only three would be black. Two would be from Somalia and still speak with an accent. One would have been born in the Caribbean and come here with her parents in the 70s. Anything else is over representation - if I assumed that TV producers owed it to me to reflect my daily experience in my city. I say they have a wider audience.

...Mindy is ugly...

i'm not actually Indian, I'm Iranian
& i apologize for saying this, I was a bit miffed after reading some Indian/Iranian comparisons online:

what do you expect from the land of nose job,and yet they portend to be white ......at least us "Arabs&indians" are proud of our real origin we don't pretend to be something else

What ever... What ever...
Indian women are far more beautiful.

??? they don't look similar at all to me. Persians have a more distinct look - prominent noses, larger jaws - while Indians have darker skin a more blended look. between the two i'd go with indian girls tbh. persian girls tend to be very fake (nose jobs) while indian girls are usually all natural. Sorry if I offended anyone

I am a fair skinned Northern Indian of Kashmiri ethnicity - And Yes Black women are attractive. In particular the African American & Carribean one's, they also have the best bodies in my opinion.
Source(s):
Yeah they are..

@ Lord of The Dogs - Although some other ethnicities in Iran like Azeri's are attractive. Actual Ethnic Persians have nothing special about their looks - infact they have the highest rate of nose jobs in the world..

I am Kashmiri & lighter skinned Punjabi girls (like Preity Zinta) are much better looking than ethnic Persians to be honest

anyway I apologize...

Ugh, you are so painfully transparent when it comes to race...your opinion on race is like listening to a toddler speaking...it is only "cute" to your family but a waste of everyone else's time...

Well, I'm told that behind every successful person lies a pack of haters, so welcome to the pack.

Anyone wanna place bets on how long it'll take this thread to hit 10 pages? I say two and a half days.

3 months later and looks nowhere near 10 pages :) looks like race isn't the hot topic it used to be on JUB.
Cute gay athletes on the other hand get 10 pages in a heartbeat :p

Uh, everytime you point your finger at someone, there are 4 others are pointing right back at you, so you are talking about yourself, dear. Oh yeah, if you spent as much time always attempting to create a situation of false equivalency anytime something involving black people as you did understanding us you wouldn't be such a dumbass. So behind a successful black person (like me) there is always a pack of whitewashed haters and whiny ass bitches (like you). How you like the taste of that...?

Oh yeah, if that was your attempt to come for me then try again...

I've recently become friends with an Indian couple. He's from Bombay, and grew up in one of the Gulf States and England; she grew up in Chicago. They are Bollywood beautiful and extraordinarily charming. Met her parents last week. They're totally charming as well. Were he gay and single and I single I'd have made a pass the first day we met.
