Attention What are you doing at the moment? 2024-25

Recovering from a brutal hike in the woods. I went with a friend/coworker to a park that’s closer to where she lives. We did 9 miles in a little over 2 hours. It was all on uneven ground so it was harder than my normal walk on the paved path.

It rained this morning, ruining my lawn and garden ambitions but then became lovely and sunny while I went and had a short nap...so I just finished picking the next batch of tomatoes for sauce and weeding the vegetable patch.

I find that by Saturday now, I am totally exhausted.

We need to line up a housecleaner again...neither of us have it left in us to tackle at the end of the week now.
 
More tomato sauce today from the pickings of yesterday. We are using a mix of yellow, mid-size red and Roma tomatoes...the sauce is very sweet with a balanced acidity.

The alfalfa is being mown today, but I don't know if they will take off all 100 acres of it this year, The fields are going to be replanted with wheat for one year next year and then re-sown over that with new hay mixture.

After mowing the orchard I took my weather head to bed for a little lay down and now we are making our beef burritos for dinner this evening.

Oh...and we have the sweetest baby rabbit living close to our terrace and it site there and nibbles salad while Mizzy keeps a lazer focus on it at all times. Fun for both of them.
 
Baling alfalfa today!

Before the rain so I think we had a fine crop. After this is off, the fields are being re-sown in wheat for a year before being re-sown in hay and fresh alfalfa.

The big bales are so gorgeous scattered across the fields in the afternoon sunlight.

A couple with hawks perched on them looking for the leftover mice in the fields.

I took some time this afternoon to mow the upper lawns because my head tells me the rain is starting tonight through the weekend.

The bees weren't as bothered by the turning weather as I thought they might be. I took off my hat and black T-shirt while I was mowing around their hives and while some of them lit on me...no stings. Thanks guys.
 
I had to pick up my sister who left her car at a repair shop this morning. On the way home I saw kids standing out waiting for a school bus. Within minutes we got one of those pop-up showers that got the kids wet on their way to school and it stopped raining after 5 minutes after it got them wet. I am going to walk outside for exercise now. It is sunny now, but I will carry an umbrella.

It is now pouring here.

And I am having a perfectly miserable Friday...but at least I finally understand where the origin of a variance comes from that has been plaguing folks all week long.

Well the sun finally came out so harvested another big batch of tomatoes for sauce...only one more round left.

And dug some more potatoes....because of the change in moisture conditions, a number of the varieties of taters have sugar/hollow core this year. Like the tomats they didn't like all the rain we got this summer.

And then it was time to make the corn chowder to freeze for the winter,

And...baking bread for the first time since April this year. I was worried I would have lost my touch, but it went pretty well...honey buttermilk loaves to slice and freeze for toast.

Next week I think I might do bagels since we are out of those as well for several months.

Now to clean the cats' poop boxes and then head for a read and a nap. We are tuckered after being out late at the first evening party we've been to this year. Between accidents and illnesses, social life has been curling up with a glass of wine to watch movies...

Another batch of tomato sauce...mostly with yellow tomatoes, which should be interesting in aqppearance.

And working at home today, partly because of a headache and partly because I can usually manage Mondays better from my office here. Where the cats are here to help me.

It is, of course, raining again.
 
And listening to the rain pouring down this evening....

And desperately trying to find a eavestrough and gutter person that will turn up.

We used to have someone who was the best in copper and galvanized and then they just disappeared. So now, 25 years on it is becoming more urgent that we find someone to do repairs.
 
At the end of another 10 hour work day.

I know I will fall asleep after supper watching TV tonight.
 
Notes from the farm today.

- They have been in to collect the honey and begin the process of getting the hives ready for winter. The bees are all being moved into sanitized new winter hives and soon a barrel of sugar water will be delivered for them to make their winter honey

- Because I worked from home today, I could fuck off after lunch and mow most of the lawn. I didn't even have to wear my bee suit. While they were busy buzzing around, I just took off my shirt and waore shorts and no hat and they were okay.

- The last of the alfalfa crop is being moved to our neighbours to the northwest as winter feed, so the fields are just empty now. They are going to be re-sown with one year of wheat and then re-sown with new hay and alfalfa.

- Last week, our Kale crop was perfect...this week it has been attacked and I think we might get one plant to freeze. The last of the Tomatoes are coming off tomorrow and the Leeks are ready for harvesting too. I have never had a year when 90% of the garden was done by mid September.
 
I just finished breakfast. My stomach has been upset for the last 2 days and I still don't have any appetite at all, but I have to eat somethin, I guess...
Now I'm off to rehearse with a baritone singer (no, not the cute one from my dream ;) )
 
Well...my first meeting for this morning was cancelled because of someone being ill, so I have been able to work at home, and at the kitchen table because it means I could also finish up the last of the tomatoes for sauce while doing work on about ten different projects today.
