In the past decade.... or even longer than that?

I think for me it was Aaliyah. She always came off as a very sweet and innocent person and her death was completely out of the blue and sad when I heard about it.

Michael Jackson's was a shocker but I wasn't a huge fan of his to be honest, probably because I was too young when he was in his prime.

This was probably my favorite song of hers:

I think even though Timbaland produces for many artists she always had a distinct and original style compared to Ciaria, Rihanna, Beyonce or any of the other female RnB singers and they really had a good thing together. I think the best work he's done was with her.

None really made me sad. Several surprised me - Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon, Andy Gibb - but none really hit me hard at all. I did find a local band I liked, and I went to their myspace page to tell them that...when I saw the lead singer had died in a car wreck that morning. That was an odd feeling.

None. Not yet anyway. I become dejected for a short period of time when I find that someone I know or know of passes. I may even reminisce by looking at artifacts that would remind me of the person. However, I'll never be a person who jumps all over someone's casket, pulling at the body, and bawling hysterically.

I know that comes across as callous to some, but I accept that death is a part of life. Entertainer or not, it does not matter. On the other hand, I know when a few relatives to whom I am close die, I will shed a few tears.

Aaliyah's death was so out of the blue, I actually cried when I found out the news. I also felt bad when I heard Luther Vandross died. Who didn't grow up on his music.

^Likewise.

Staley's was even worse because he'd been a recluse for years and it two weeks before someone noticed he was missing and there was the proverbial strange smell coming from his apartment. He was a guy who never quite got rid of all his demons, I feel.

And Shannon Hoon, as mentioned by Lex. The eponymous debut album by Blind Melon is on my 10 Things to Take to a Desert Island list.

John Lennon the most, for sure.

Selena, because it was so shocking (though I knew NOTHING about her music).

Elvis Presley was the one that made me cry, but I think the John Lennon death bothered me more than Elvis or MJ.

Cass 'Mama Cass' Elliot. I adored her voice and her music and I was so sad that I would never hear more of it again.

Aaliyah. My constant ever so changing avatar's of hers speaks for itself. she was amazing and i still am like i can't believe she is gone, that was my girl. just imagine what other things she would've accomplished if still alive.
I think she'd still be succesful in music or acting. Which was your favorite song from her?

Jerry Garcia. I lost a great tax deduction.

Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley

Yup, me too. The others I was either too young to remember or attach informed interest to, or I wasn't enough of a fan to feel more than shock.

Even with Michael Jackson, though I actually cried a little when I heard, I think it was more from shock than sadness. The Michael Jackson I loved the most had already begun to disappear after Thriller.

And maybe in the 10-15 years since Cobain and Staley died, I've become that much more jaded. 15 years ago I was still somewhat within the youthful notion that I was immortal, as was my generation, and had yet to become desensitised to tragic, untimely death. And I loved their music so much.

Staley's was even worse because he'd been a recluse for years and it two weeks before someone noticed he was missing and there was the proverbial strange smell coming from his apartment. He was a guy who never quite got rid of all his demons, I feel.

Yeah. I bought that controversial pseudobiography by the South American woman released around his death just to read what he said in the phone interview they did. His words were fucking chilling. I think it was only a few months before he died. It reinforced my horror that nothing could be done for this guy.

wasn't aware of his music at the time, but Elliott Smith.

all death were sad no matter if they were singers or not.
some were more sad than others depends on your knowledge of that person.

Ella Fitzgerald.....I discovered her near the end of career in the 90's..She was a beautiful person and shes one of those artist you wish you could go back in time to see certain performances and concerts like her Ella in Berlin from 1960 and when she won at the Apollo armature contest in 1935...

Aaliyah and Left Eye are the ones who stand out for me. Left Eye's the one who had me bawling though.
