  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Which singer's death were you most sad about?

Ella Fitzgerald.....I discovered her near the end of career in the 90's..She was a beautiful person and shes one of those artist you wish you could go back in time to see certain performances and concerts like her Ella in Berlin from 1960 and when she won at the Apollo armature contest in 1935...
Me, too... I discovered her too late. I had a chance to see her live in what turned out to be her final tour; but the concert was the same weekend as my Grandmother's 75th birthday, and we were having this big shindig up in the mountains, and it's always "Family First" with me. I figured Ella would tour again, but Grandmother would only turn 75 once. Fifteen years and three big shindig birthdays for Grandmother later, I am filled with regret.

Of course, unlike those who died young at the beginnings of their careers, Ella left us a vast library of fantastic recordings. I admit I feel sad when I hear of these young stars being cut down in their primes, or before they even get started good; but I feel that about anyone who dies young and all their potential going with them.

The amazing Freddie Mercury...... messenger of the gods

Cass Elliot and Karen Carpenter, without a doubt, and not just because of their music. At the times of their deaths - both at the age of 32 - both singers were trying to make their changes in their lives by going solo.

Cass Elliot was appearing in sold out performances in London when she died of a heart attack in her hotel room. Karen Carpenter had attempted to record a solo album, then sought treatment for her anorexia, and was actually supposed to sign her divorce papers the day she died.

I look at clips of both women singing now, and I often wonder what other music they might have recorded and what their voices would have sounded like. Cass Elliot would have been 68 years old this year; Karen Carpenter would have been 59.

Cass Elliot - Dream A Little Dream Of Me

I've uploaded LOTS of Carpenter videos on YouTube. Here's three:

Carpenters - Superstar (LIVE) (Karen was 21 years old.)

Karen Carpenter - Something's Missing (In My Life) (unreleased track from her solo album)

And my personal tribute for her:
Karen In Our Dreams (Remembering Karen Carpenter)

Freddie Mercury. I was little, but me and all the other boys in my class were crazy about Queen...

Hm, John Paul II recorded some songs too...

Celebrity deaths are overrated.

To this day, I truly miss Karen Carpenter. She had the voice of an angel. I wonder today what she would be singing now. Secondly - Ella Fitzgerald. I too found her too late in my life but what a voice. She crossed many boundaries with her musical voice. Thank you God for these two wonderful singers. As for male singers - Nat "King" Cole. What a talented man and that voice !!

Wasn't "My Love Is Your Love" her last hit? Anyway, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Laura Branigan. :(

Ah, yes! Laura Branigan was another of my favorite singers back in the 80's. I posted a thread about her a few years ago:

All the videos I posted there were removed by Viacom shortly afterwards, but several of them have since been reposted. Here's three of my favorites:

GLORIA BRANIGAN - Self Control

GLORIA BRANIGAN - Gloria

GLORIA BRANIGAN - Forever Young
