If Abercrombie & Fitch opens a store in Kansas City with a slew of Caucasian guys, I can understand. Why can't they use a slew of hunky, athletic Asian men when they open a store in Asia, or in a place where practically all of the customers are Asian?

Oh dear .. I have resisted like 20 or so posts now, where one could simply take your post and throw it back at you while pointing fingers at your other posts. But this one almost takes the cake.

First: there are some Asian models, some pretty hot ones. Yeah they almost look like the others .. yep. But that's the Abercrombie style. People who buy their overpriced stuff want to look like that. It's an american chain, no asian chain.

The real implied message here is that White guys who are college-aged, athletic, "jocks" are the paragon of male beauty.

Do I need to dig up a post about you whorshipping athletic white males or can you surprise us and recognize the hypocrisy on your own?

I DO ADMIT that I am attracted to White guys. In fact, I even said so in my post, and I'll quote myself --

I do know that, since I was a kid or young teenager, almost all of the attractive leading men in the movies I saw happened to be White. In the Sunday newspaper advertisements for department stores like Macys or JCPenney, most of the men they showed shirtless (advertising boxers or underwear) were White men. Even the first time I ever saw a photo of a naked man (it was "Ryan Idol" with a smooth chest, from the 1990s), he was White. And most of the guys who are famous or well-known in gay porn are White as well.

And of course, almost all of the shirtless, athletic Abercrombie models at my local shopping mall were college-aged White men. (Abercrombie has started to use Latinos and African-Americans in the advertising, but its still rare and in response to lawsuits. In a group photo of hot guys they took for Christmas advertising, they used all White guys except for a couple Latino guys almost unnoticeable, in the back of the group).

How many times do you see handsome, attractive Asian & Indian men displayed in American & the Western media? How many Asian & Indian guys are well-known in Hollywood, modeling, or even gay porn?

Maybe it's just a coincidence that I find myself attracted to White guys so much. Or I may have been subconsciously primed & influenced by the media, advertising, Hollywood, and even gay porn to believe that White guys are more attractive than guys from other races. That's not right, and that's what I'm railing against.

I think the problem is that we're taking modern-day attitudes of multiculturalism and applying it to 50+ years worth of advertising.

The simple fact is that for many, many years, the overwhelming majority of the U.S. population was caucasian. If you're a company trying to sell a product, you're going to advertise it to the largest possible target market and use models that are as much like that target market as possible.

It's only been in the past 10-20 years, if that, that certain portions of the population, namely Hispanics and African-Americans, have been large enough in numbers and had large enough incomes to have an impact on sales and marketing. And that's why now you're starting to see stores like JCPenney and Wal-Mart print bilingual ads, for example, to appeal to a larger customer base. The last Macy's catalog I looked at had 3 black models on the cover and 1 token white guy, instead of the reverse.

And not that I'm trying to defend A&F necessarily, but, unlike Penney's or Wal-Mart, they are not trying to appeal to a broad demographic. They are targeting a specific niche of upper-middle class to upper class preppy urban trend- and label-conscious young adults with Ivy League aspirations who, statistically, happen to be overwhelmingly white.

So does that mean they shouldn't hire ethnic minority models? Of course not. But when was the last time you saw a skinny, pimple-faced, unattractive sales clerk of any ethnicity working at an A&F store? Rightly or wrongly, they are selling an image and/or a lifestyle to a defined consumer market, just like every other company in America.

All of their bodies look EXACTLY the same. I like guys to look unique, and like real people. . .not Ken dolls who rolled off of an assembly line.

Yes, I will add that this was the point in my life I realized that looks are not all cracked up as they are. I will take an amazing personality over looks any day.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting some A& F clothes as part of my christsmas exchange gift present....but after hearing so much negative comments about A&F, should I buy or not buy or get something else instead???

The image and the intangible brand are horrible but the clothes themselves are fine, particularly the mens. Of course the problem is that A&F likes to plaster their logo on everything (although AE is now a thousand times worse). Seriously, most of the clothes I have bought from when I worked there still are going strong to this day. Buy a nice pair of sweatpants/loungewear pants and you will love them.
