Gay icon definitely seems like a stretch, for sure. His song caught note mostly because while pop has no shortage of gay rights friendly activists, hip hop has a conflicted relationship with gay issues. So far as I know at least, no other hip hop performer had addressed this issue so directly before.

The sad fact about Amerika is that any fly-by-night performer gets labelled as an 'icon'. But I don't know if Macklemore do gay lyrics and I can't be bothered spending 4 minutes to find some.

Macklemore grew up with gay relatives and friends and was tired of hearing hip hop artists demean gays--both in the music and behind the scenes--so he thought he's do something about it and take a stand---should he be a gay icon? Don't know about that but think it's important for str guys in homophobic industries to speak out---think it makes a difference.
