Why Can't JUBers Learn To Speak?

I always enjoy these use of English threads. It is the only time everyone, for and against, takes the effort to write correctly to ensure that they get their message across. ;)

The few underlying themes are also repetative.

People can call us anything under the sun and insults flow implying that they have the right to go into attack mode but we don't have the right to even dare to mention our opinion.

The "I couldn't care less" attitude is rife. Read it or don't what does it matter. Well that works both ways; why bother posting if no one bothers reading it. Has respect for one's reader really disappeared from on-line society?

Finally none of you seem to realise the real underlying concern in our criticisms.

Somethings have an inherent worth and others don't. It is up to you to decide where the correct use of the written word is situated, many of us have already decided on its worth.

Here is some advice:

Don't use ANY internet forums if you really care that much because there are ALWAYS going to be some people who type that way because it's faster and easier for them.

I respect others enough to take the time and effort to see that they can understand what it is I am saying. Why do I deserve less respect?

And really... If you get THAT bothered by it you're kind of a douche anyway.

I don't think anyone has ever called me one of those before.

It's not ABOUT respect... and THAT is the point. It's about how easy/efficient it is to type like that comparatively.

And that is why this world is going to crap. I doubt if most younger people even know what 'respect' means anymore. You might want to look it up in the dictionary before you disrepect more respectful people by calling them douches.

You, sir, are an idiot. What you SHOULD have interpreted from that post was that they do NOT type that way out of disrespect but because it is easier for them to type that way, plain and simple.

Well, now I'm an idiot as well.

You, Sir, do not deserve the respect I am paying you.

(I will not be responding anymore.)

A very convenient course of action when you realize that you have no argument.

Thats a bit disrespectful to 'most younger people' though, innit?
Im a younger person.. I just think "respect" is meant/looked upon differently now, doesnt mean, we as younger humans, do not know what it means..

Not a specific dig directly at you.. just something I felt I should type..

I dont know why actually.. Reading back, doesnt look as clear as how i wanted it to been read./come across #-o

I get what you mean. So along with having no argument he's a hypocrite as well! Lol, this is too good.

Please note the highlighted word in the sentence which you quoted. It is a very important word.

I noted most, hence why i said its a bit disrespectful to most younger people..
i wasnt saying it for all younger people.. i even took trouble to put it in speeeech marks!

Okay. I'm very confused. Is it or is it not 'disrespectful' to call someone a 'douche', an 'idiot', and a 'hypocrite'? If it isn't, then I have a few choice words waiting in the wings.

I'm not a young person but I do think that "respect" is something that needs to be earned, it is not a privilege, nor can it be demanded.
gsxd - you make some very valid points but JUB is an internet site and therefore we should all expect to see the use of abbreviations and slang. As long as someone is able to post a comment that is readable then I see no harm in its use.

I also think that Name Taken and J.Mills have made their points very well - okay referring to someone as a douche may not be the best of terms to use but it wasn't personally aimed at you.

On the whole JUB appears to be used by younger guys so I think that we need to be a bit more accepting of the language used on here and in return show them our respect.

A grade "A" post! :D I CAN see gdsx's POV but was a little irked when he took that comment personally. I think your posts cleared everything up! (*8*)

Of course it isnt respectable to call someone those names.. you know that, just as much as I do!

Btw, nice post Marc.. I should learn to write my POV a little clearer, huh!

Remember that ALL communication is context specific. That is, in the medium of the Internet there are different rules and regulations than there are for written communication in another medium. Very often, I use them because they are easier at times. (EG: One of my favorites is "j/k". That ends many of my posts.)

I have come to terms with the idea that many Internet users (young and old, but the younger among us have grown up always having the internet) choose to use abbreviations and shortcuts that took me a while to figure out. (I finally had to ask someone several years ago what ROFLMAO actually stood for!)

What bothers me, as a teacher, is when I see Internet colloquialisms and shortcuts showing up in other media. A student once turned in a paper that concluded with "IMHO, . . . . " In a formal paper!

What scares me a little bit (although maybe "scares" is too strong a term) is that there may be some who can't make the distinction between what is appropriate for Internet communication and what is appropriate for other forms of written communication.

One final clarification, while not accurate, I'm lumping text-messaging in with Internet communication. Perhaps "electronic communication" would be a better phrase. ("Digital communication"?)

That is, MHO, as it were.

I'm not quite so patient with people who speak no other language than English. If I have to try to translate it into something I can understand, I usually just pass on by, and have done so on many occasions.

As can be seen in a quote from one of my earlier posts (#24), I have no problem with abbreviations and slang. If I have to decipher it, I simply pass it by, and that is unfortunate since the person obviously has something to say, but leave it to me to figure out what it is.

No I disagree. Respect should be given automatically until proven that the recipient does not deserve it.
