I'm just saying that those important to you should know.... And you seem to agree with me.
And so I just don't get how this rather common sense mode of being OUT - no pink shirts with
I'm Gay emblazoned in glitter ... really only known to the people in our lives and the occassional banker when the subject comes up naturally.... how does this engender any
visibility that will supposedly work against gay hatred?
I know all the bromides about how once people see that gay people are normal just like everybody else, they'll chill out with the phobishness. But the truth is that most gay people are
so normal, no one's really noticing they're even
there.
And what about the assertion that the more visible gays are, the more hatred is stirred up? I have a gut reaction that agrees with this. There's another thread around here today about gays making up only 2% of the population. I think that conclusion is crap ... but I also think there'd be less gay hate if we really
were that insignificant a minority.
And do you think those who hate gays hate us simply because it's socially acceptable, and there must always be
some group to direct hatred at? Or is there a real reason that phobics have their phobia? Is it simply what they're
taught, or is there a real, personal source of homo hatred for the people who truly hate queers?
I don't have any answers to
any of this ... but what I find so distressing about the current times of anti-gay backlash is the way it seems to be open season on gay-bashing in most parts of this country. We've got zero political support, and the anti-gay rights frenzy seems to be growing geometrically. Whatever we're doing or
not doing ... it's not working. And I wish we could come up with new angles toward a lasting solution of civil rights and general acceptance as human beings.
