I mentioned this in a PM, but the thing I notice more with Blacks seem to be this sense of "community" and sticking together because of "race". And much of that "community" is held together through religion.
Of all the major racial and ethnic groups in the United States, black Americans are the most likely to report a formal religious affiliation. Even among those blacks who are unaffiliated, three-in-four belong to the "religious unaffiliated" category (that is, they say that religion is either somewhat or very important in their lives), compared with slightly more than one-third of the unaffiliated population overall.
So it seems to me that one of the chief roadblocks for Gays is the amount of Blacks that are religious and hold religious views. It is in higher proportion to both Asians and Whites, and according to this poll, is only 1% higher than Hispanics.
And what I see amongst a lot of Blacks in this thread that are Gay is that this sense of community amongst one's own color of their skin is more important to them than one's sexuality.
Unlike other Blacks in this thread that feel it is EQUALLY important, because they understand that both of these movements are to their benefit, the other side feels that they have to choose one over the other.
Obviously, this would lead me to speculate on whether or not most Blacks are more likely to align with their racial community's views on Homosexuality, and view it as a disgrace and abomination with their fellow Black citizens.
In other words, because there is this belief amongst Blacks where "the Black race must stand together at all cost", are Black Gays more likely to take a laissez-faire approach with Gay Rights, simply because there is loyalty to one's Race? And therefore we don't have as many Black Gays coming out and educating their friends, families, and peers on Homosexuality simply because of this alignment to the philosophies and ideologies of the majority of the Black Race?
I think that explains a lot of things, if that is the case. And also could explain a lot of things amongst Hispanics as well, who were the second largest Religious group identified.
And if that means sacrificing one's fight for rights and equality for being Gay, in favor of how the majority of the Community feels about it, then so be it?
I think Whites are getting less and less religious because we don't have this same sense of "Community" amongst each other and don't feel the need to "stick together because we're White". Instead, we have scattered amongst ourselves and have become free thinkers, as opposed to worrying about what other White's are thinking.
And we want to talk about "Community Leaders"? Quite frankly I don't want any "Community Leaders" for either Whites or Gays. The last thing that I want to see is an Al Sharpton or a Jesse Jackson getting up and shooting their mouths off, stirring the pot, and claiming to speak for me ... especially when I may not agree with the things they are saying, yet it still reflects poorly upon me in public.
I think preserving one's individuality is more important, without us having some mouthpiece up there foaming at the mouth about Gay Rights.
But all I am saying is that if this is the line of thinking amongst Blacks and Hispanics in which one feels the need to have this sense of loyalty to one's Race, simply because they happen to have the same skin color .... and if we don't have enough Blacks and Hispanics doing their part in educating people in their Communities about Homosexuality due to this loyalty, AND the Community making them feel less than human because their religion preaches that "Gays are an Abomination", then this probably explains why there is a lag amongst the Hispanic and Black Communities as a whole, as it pertains to attitudes amongst Homosexuality.
It is ironic, as Cupcake pointed out, that the slave owners were the ones that initially taught Christianity to Blacks. If getting the farthest away from Slavery and those times is truly in the best interest of Blacks, it is peculiar that so many would follow the very same beliefs that were taught to them by "White Christians".
Those same White Christians were such wonderful people when they purchased Blacks from the Black Slave Traders in Africa, weren't they?
