  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Would you rather live in New York City or Los Angeles? Why?

@Jasun & DJ:

The thing is, I dislike sweating with a passion. You get wet from head to toe, and trying to embrace somebody, or even get too close to them, is difficult because of embarrassing smells, embarrassing moisture, and embarrassing stains on clothing. Plus, when it gets too hot, you begin to feel like you're being smothered.

Our summer here in Reno's short: two months, really, or two and a half months in bad years. But after about three weeks, I'm already looking forward to the cold weather.

To each his own, I guess.

It never really gets that hot here in LA. Maybe a few days out of the year. But the nights are always cool. And it never gets very cold, either.

Reno as in Nevada? I'm also a Reno resident. :)

To answer the question, it has to be L.A. hands down. I've been there a few times and have absolutely LOVED it. Sure traffic is kinda bad, but NYC also has bad traffic in some parts. NYC seems like a more business-oriented, rushing, and crowding city which I don't like much. L.A. is spread out and you can pretty much access any kind of place i.e. beach, canyon, national forest, or even Mammoth for skiing. Not to mention the mansions. In NYC all there are are apartments or condos that are big, but are still what they are: condos.

I'm the opposite. I moved to Florida to get away from the snow and cold.

I can get used to the heat. I can never get used to the cold. The winters in a cold climate are dreary and depressing. We also get an extra hour of daylight in the winter since we are closer to the equator. In the Spring to Summer time they get an hour more daylight.

I grew up 15 miles from Manhattan. I would rather live in L.A because the climate in milder.

But then you have all the crazies in Florida!

To me sweating is not that horrible, and my deodorant is really good when I sweat I still smell pretty. It doesn't bother me even though I do sweat a lot.
But people rarely give me dirty looks when they see a lot of sweat, they give me more of a compassionate look...like you poor human.
I sweat during the winter too when I start working a litle...I am the only one who sweats during winter at work lol...it actually makes me look good my managers even tell me to take a little break sometimes they think I'm working hard or something.

Jasun,

STFU.....

You are a transplanted California addict. The posters are right, L.A. and all
the rest of California sucks. We are pretentious. contentious and lest you
forget....austentatious.

We are vapid, self centered weed and wine freaks with no culture or hint of
sophistication. The freeways are actually shooting galleries and pistol ranges
and we barely have minimal 'necessities like power water or indoor toileting
facilities 5 minutes beyond any city limit sign.

Jasun, sit down and STFU before someone believes your lies and the sheep
start trying to move out here with our DIS-contented cows and rubes.

I say Portland!!! Hey the New York Times won't get off our back on how great this city is!!!

And besides, in L.A. you can't have Hot August Nights at places like the once

famous Mustang Sally's outside of Reno, the biggest little city in the world.

But the traffic situation's awful in LA, Jasun. I'm a nervous driver already, and as a passenger get sick to my stomach very easily. I rode on the LA freeways just once, and was sure that my life was in danger. It was horrible.

I think you have to have nerves of steel to navigate the LA freeways, which you must do to get absolutely anywhere.

Not for me.

Don't they also have a subway type of thingy being built even though it's going slowly?
Whenever I watch this video it makes me rethink L.A.

But I can't help notice the cute landscape which attracts me...also makes me wonder why those crazy bastards would build those high overpasses....eventually earthquakes have to fuck them up.
Might as well build a rail or something better that won't get too messed up during an earthquake.

And how many more World Trade Centers are going to be built? Was the

Staten Island Fairy really busted for 'plying' his/her trade intra-coastily?

I like Shake and Bake better than Blam and Scam. lol.

I spent a very short time in both, so clearly I'm well-qualified to answer this question :p.

Pros for New York:
Many of them; too many to list
Major pro - hyper-efficient public transport; perfect for someone like me who's used to driving everywhere and anywhere whenever I want/need to

Cons:
Parking is woefully expensive if you own a car
No decent beaches anywhere

Pros for LA:
Decent beaches, plural, with good weather
Um... that's about it. I was told by a mate who went there "as soon as you arrive in LA, rent a car and drive to Vegas because LA sucks so much." I preferred San Diego by some distance over LA.

Cons for LA:
Sprawl; traffic; smog
Public transport might be efficient, but it is raped by NY and DC's bus/train system

Having said all that, the weather/beaches thing might win out. I could probably find the things I needed in LA, and get by; I can't make nice weather or beaches in New York. I'd probably go to SD rather than LA, though.

Never been to either city, but I have more of an attraction to.... Los Angeles.

I dunno why, I've always been drawn to California as a place in the U.S. I'd love to see one day.

Makes me wish I should have gone there from Minneapolis, instead of flying all the way back home. :(

Today I had to walk up a really big hill and it was annoying...so I decided I like flat landscapes now.

MIAMI it is.

Nah I'm just breaking your balls....maybe....

But the traffic situation's awful in LA, Jasun.

I mean... I guess if your'e taking the free way at rush hour, sure. But just about any city has bad traffic. I mean, you try to get across Manhattan at 5:30 in the afternoon.

I think you have to have nerves of steel to navigate the LA freeways, which you must do to get absolutely anywhere.

Well, and again.. not really. There are plenty of surface streets and like Stacy pointed out, there are plenty of neighbourhoods all over the place. I walk to a lot of places. My favorite bars, my comic store, my coffee shop, a lot of my favorite restaurants.. they're all here in Silverlake and I can either walk or just take my scooter.

But yes... Los Angeles is a huge city and you DO need to be able to drive in busy traffic. It's not for everyone, but the picture painted of it by some people here is more like something from a TV show.

People are mentioning LA traffic because you HAVE to deal with it to get anywhere. NY doesn't have that problem.

Not really true. I hardly deal with LA traffic because I work north of the city in the mountains at the Jake Cruise ranch and live near downtown and I can avoid the 5, the 10 and the 101 at rush hour.

There's a subway that, although not perfect by any means, is great for some people and they're doing a big boost to our public transit all the time.

You'll find a lot of small neighbourhoods popping up all the time. like mine... where you can get around walking quite easily.

Every city and every state has its natural disasters, its pretentious people and its annoying traffic at whatever their "busiest time of day" is.

If you want a warm climate, where it rarely rains, where it's never snowed, where you can get city life 5 minutes one way, and country life 5 minutes the other way, California is for you. There are also mountains, lakes, beaches, beautiful landmarks and two of the gayest cities in the US - West Hollywood and San Francisco.

I don't know a lot about New York and I refuse to judge it based on what I've seen on Law & Order, CSI:NY and NYPD Blue.

But as a Los Angeles native I can tell you that if you want to find pretentious, glitzy, too good for anyone else people, they're here. If you want to find down home, nice people, we're here. Just like any other city in the world.

The best judges for the city are the natives and the ones that were transplanted here but remain in the city for their own reasons. Anyone outside the city who's only seen what it's about on television and in the movies has not seen the real California. Shocking, I know, but movies and television make stuff up. Go figure.

If you want Prop 8, then California is for you too.

Just j/k.

I love LA. But no to live there.... I know too well the dangers of Earthquakes and such.

New York is where it's at if I want to be a playwright. My screenwriting career needs LA, but I'm less interested in that since Hollywood doesn't want my gay-centric writing as much as Broadway does. (But Hollywood does need it more, no?)
