  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Would you rather live in New York City or Los Angeles? Why?

NYC in a heartbeat. LA is plastic, fake, superficial, botox, collagen, spray tanning and smog.

New York is chill, street corner hot dogs, great nightlife, a sense of an older more established culture, and all the sophistication and shopping/restaurants you could possibly want, but without most of the nauseating judgemental attitude of LA.

*tap tap*

Prop 8 is on its way to being repealed. ;)

Yeah, I know Congratulations. :=D:

However there seem to be more MEGA churches in LA than in NY.

Just sayin'

The consensus of all the people I know, is that the most gorgeous US city is San Francisco..... but again, the Earthquakes

You know you can get the best of both worlds () in Paris.

It beats New York in culture, and it beats LA in judgemental attitude too.

oh don't get me wrong. i spent 2 months in paris and fell in love with it. i absolutely love paris but given the choice of LA and NYC, i'll take New York anyday.

To Johanne because I missed him earlier....

And then the naked wusses cavort on the beach and river or pool side

while the well bundled dumb asses shiver and shovel........Okay by me

Naked wussing is a good deal and you never have to worry about being

over dressed either. A pair of flip flops and a towel (you can borrow those)

and of course your own rack or pinion.....

I would prefer Los Angeles.

Having been to NYC and living in Los Angeles all my life, I have to attest that NYC is far nicer than inner city LA. You see, city life is not nearly as glamorous as they capture in the movies. Out there are vagrants and slums and all type of unsightly scenery. NYC is the posterboy bustling international city of finance brimming with "sophistication" and "class". Giuliani has received much praise for cleaning up this city. But there really isn't much in downtown Los Angeles.

You see, the true heart of Los Angeles, as any California native can attest, is in the suburbs. Manicured gardens with flora of all colors abound. A rainbow palette of stucco homes: beige, pink, green, orange. In the morning owners walk their petite dogs. We have the most lovely array of outdoor shopping centers. Quaint boutiques line the street. Each shop has its own unique facade, it own aesthetic. Here there is room for many different styles of architectures whether it be modernistic steel on glass or of a slower time. Coffee shops invite passerbys to comfortably pass their time.

Here in the suburbs there is resounding beauty. We come to escape the plague infested city. No towers of stained concrete or panhandlers sitting on the sidewalk. No eavesdropping crowds or litter. Here we maintain a tranquil civility: not quite like the manure stench countryside and not quite like the tireless city. In the suburbs dignified professional gather to build a community. We are sophisticates as well but of a different breed: not based on worldliness but a subtle refinement.

So romance of the city if you will but when you weary of your youthful lusts for adventure you will come to appreciate metropolitan Los Angeles as well.

Why Elvin?

Espanola immigration has an annual limit on American East Coast bred

Ricans that are even lighter on their feet than they are in peoples pockets.

sex, ethnic, morals, sick humour, politics.....did I leave anything out?

Both wonderful places. But I'm going to have to go with Los Angeles simply because the weather is nicer than New York's.

I live in Southern California, and I have visited New York. Too many people living on top of each other in New York, crowded streets, small apartments, cramped-in high rise buildings, cold winter weather, and I am not impressed with all the Wall Street and corporate trappings.

L. A. such as it is now, and as once was has a better climate, sets national trends, has all the excitement of the entertainment business, and most of all the beach. And, there are always those week end trips to San Francisco!

Come for a visit, but this is not a good time to move here. The State is broke. Unemployment is extremely high. And, illegal aliens are taking over the streets.

i have no defensive attitude towards boston. I just love where I live. if its not for you, you ought to leave as soon as posible.

You know, that's not so easy, especially if you're just a college student. I honestly dislike where I live very much (it's "always" summer, and the humidity is always ~50-70%), but I love where I go to college. I would gladly get an apartment somewhere near my school, but I just don't have the money for it. I am looking forward to it, though.

New York sucks. LA has its problems but it's far superior to New York in a million ways. Major reasons include weather, nicer people, more chill, more greenery space and beauty.

Neither if i had to pick a city it would be either Chicago Or Atlanta and some parts in fl

I been to Nyc a few times i like it but i couldn't picture my self living there its too expensive and crowded. yes the people are extremely rude and they are always in a hurry i like to stand around and have a nice conversation.

And the apartments and housing is expensive apartments the size of a shoe for 2k are you serious?!

La I never been to La before it seems dirty and too many Illegals and Crime and the cost of living is expensive. I wouldn't want to live with roommates forever.

It cracks me up watching House Hunters and the people say OMG i brought a house and it was a steal $750k

Nicer people? What LA have you been to? I found the people in LA falsely polite and deeply uncaring. New Yorkers may not look at you right away, but they won't act like they care if they don't, and if they do they'll really help you.

More greenery space? OK, more space, but most of the year nothing in LA is green except palm trees. Everything is green here now. A lot of things will be green all winter.

And not having (real) seasons may seem like an upside to you, but to me it's a FAIL.

Even if I lived in the States, I wouldn't live in either of them.

Instead of NYC, I think that one of the best places you could live is South Orange, New Jersey. It's no more than a 15 or 20 minute drive into NYC and is the home of a train station route right into the city. I don't live there, but it's a cool town. It is also very gay-friendly and artsy. I would say that it is very diverse and, if you wanted to live in New York, I believe that northern New Jersey it might be the less expensive alternative, regardless of what town exactly.

There are also some very good parts of the city with nice, more quiet communities. One of these is Roosevelt Island, but there are others that are simply more detached from the "hustle and bustle" of things.

I can't speak for whether I'd rather L.A. or NYC, but you can't really go wrong with NYC, because you can get around so efficiently.

I've been to both. NY is crowded, noisy and expensive. Weather is varied, I'd call that a plus. People are actually pretty friendly, at least to me they are.

LA is spread out, air is usually foul. I thought there was something on fire one day. It's just the brown air. Palm trees are pretty filthy too. Rats enjoy nesting in them and they provide no shade. Driving anywhere is a pain, but easier than NY. Parking is marginally better. NY has better public transit by a long shot. LA does have the earthquake issue. It's something most people don't consider, because they are a bit self absorbed. Finally the people are rather cliquish and superficial in my experience.

All in all, I don't see any great reason to live in either location. There are many places that are more beautiful, cleaner and cheaper to live than either city. It all depends on what's important to you.
