When you try to skip school but run into all your relatives on the street and your mom already knows before she gets a call from the school.....
When you go to the hardware store for some touch up paint and they know all your room colors and paint codes...

First off, You have to drive to the city to go to Wal-Mart.
Second, you have to drive to the city to buy new door locks for grandma's place after she died because the new people asked for the keys and nobody remembered what they looked like or where they are.
The new people still call the house the old Gawith place, and she passed on in 1985.
The car keys are in the ignition, they have been there since 1969 when the car was bought new.
The major businesses in town are the Ranch and Home, Sentry Market, and the Bank (which also houses the DMV, and the Post Office).
There are two dealerships in town, John Deere and Ford. And all the Ford dealer stocks is Pick-ups and Trucks.
The new people have been there since 1985.
Town is actually two towns that merged, and one is dry.
You know what a dry town means.
Your uncle gets drunk at the bar, the police chief brings him home and takes you to get the pick up, and you are 10.
You can drive a stick shift before your 8th birthday.
The high school parking lot is Main street and when school is in session, there are pick ups parked on both sides of the road.
Wealth is determined by acreage, and tractor count. If you have your own packing shed and cold storage, ...
You are from one of the wealthier families, because you have cars, pick-ups, and a garage to park them in.
You know what it means to be "from the wrong side of the tracks". Bonus points if the tracks actually are tracks, and are still in service.

I'm not from a small town but my better half and I used to have a summer home in one in North Carolina many years ago...and I remember this exact thing happening one year on the Fourth of July. The Fire Chief was the most embarrassed man in town for months!

OK this is the town I live in:
1600 people
no stop lights in town and we live in the old Sheman place
The previous owners came by to see the place when we had 4 60 foot pines taken down out front. They had heard about it from folks in town.
The local Newspaper comes out monthly and the fire dept and police dept and the town hall all write what has happened in the last month
The General Store ( and really is called the General Store) is our bakery, coffee shop, gas station (2 pumps on the sidewalk outside), deli,hardware store and has the only ATM in town.
During the spring summer and into the fall it's not uncommon to see a tractor drive by my home daily...on a state highway.
During the growing season, roughly 3 times, all manner of pick up trucks go by my house carrying local grown hay.
The annual Labor Day Parade does loop through "down town" twice.
I had been pulled over by the Chief of Police and someone recognized me in the store a couple of months after the fact.
Life in a very small town is not far off from what folks have written here.
