You can tell you live in a small rural town when.....

When visiting said small town you're told to turn left at the light - not the traffic light but the only street light in town!

there is no Starbucks, or so few Starbucks that you don't notice them across the street from each other.
It's more like Starwhats? High falutin city folk. Just shut up and drink your damn coffee.

Sorry, but while in Hutchinson Kansas one of the Anchor stores was TSC. For those who are uninitiated with them, TSC stands for Tractor Supply Company and you could buy all sorts of farm implements as well as seed and live poultry.

I had forgotten about this, Peg!! When I lived there in 2001, it was Orscheln's...and Hobby Lobby! LOL

When you have to pack a lunch to get the mail (or cross the street to get it after waiting on a speeding truck to go by).

When you're young and older people meet you they ask "Who's boy are you?"

The newspaper reports things like Ester Johnstone's son visiting from the city.

...the local newspaper (which only comes out weekly since not much goes on) devotes an entire column to reporting who had out-of-town company including who they were and what they did while in town.

Dude.. in the town I grew up in there were FIVE columns like that.

Scary.

Oh.. oh..

The local newsapaper has on the front page a story about some kid who got a job in another town or city, and it features his high school graduation photo.

When you call a wrong number, the person on the other end politely gives you the proper number off the top of their head.

...you know what an implements store is.

...you buy wedding gifts at the implements store.

the annual parade is so short it loops around twice

You think they don't? Some years ago I was living in Gatton, Queensland, and that's exactly what they did with the "Potato Festival" parade! A friend was driving his tractor in it, and I got to go along for the ride. We drove up one side of Main Street (which was divided by a strip of grass and trees), turned around and went down the other side, then did it all again. We waved to the same folks four times.

Brian 1 reminded me of this one:

You give directions by family names: "You turn by the Johnsons and head over the Smith place. Then, you take the fork between the Browns' and Wilson's . . . "

. . . even long after those families have long since moved away.

Lol, this is so true. After the families move away, the place is refered to as "Ol' Brown's place" or "Ol' Johnson's place."

You know you're in a small rural town when, everyone only gives out the last 4 digits of their phone number.

when your mom is also your school teacher........and if she spanked you at school as "Mrs. B" .......

when your town only gets street names because the 911 emergency number went into effect.

...yes i lived in a town with less than 1K people for the better part of my life. ;)

.... you take pride in the number of generations your family has lived in that same town.

... you either have a grab a shovel or drive four hours to the nearest city to do your banking.

... word of mouth works better than invitations when it's your birthday, wedding, anniversary, etc.

... the sherrif's office and the fire department are the same five guys in the same building.

... you hate country music, but you dance at the country bar because it's the only bar in town.

Twice in one day? You lucky boy!
