A Gay Teen kills himself after being outed on the internet!

it's in german mainstream media now as well. der Spiegel has an article on it, also covering GA Andrew Shirvell's hate campaign in it. they do mention the "posts from a gay message board" but don't name JUB.

Does anyone know if either Ravi or Wei have shown any remorse whatsoever or is their lawyer keeping their mouths zipped too tight?

I know apologising and showing remorse would be admitting their guilt, but they can't really deny involvement with all the proof that has been unveiled.

I've not heard about Wei, but I understand that Ravi is pretty much a wreck at the moment - forget which media outlet reported it (I've read so many news items today).

He should feel regret and remorse for the rest of his pathetic life. Hopefully he gets sentenced to the full sentence. Too bad it's only 5 years. Should be over 10.

Clementi's family needs to get a really good lawyer. Those two assholes can get away with this if they get a hold of a smart lawyer.

This is very sad. He must have felt so humiliated by the thought of his roommate watching him like that.
For what it's worth though. I'm not sure we should be so hard on the roommate. He wouldn't have expected it to turn out like this. He probably thought it was just a bit of a prank and a laugh. The sort of prank that goes on at many a university around the world every day. He's probably hurting right now too.

No. This is a hate crime. A REPEATED hate crime. He broadcast his roommate's privacy to the whole internet to see. That is not a prank. He's also not 10. he's 18. He's old enough to know what kind of consequence his actions will lead to.

I can't imagine any attorney allowing either of them to speak publicly on this issue.

I can't imagine Ravi even being able to go back to attend classes - even if he could keep his mind on the subject matter, he will be harassed (and maybe supported) by others. But he won't ever be able to just get away from it. I suspect he has spent his last days at Rutgers.

What he did was incredibly insensitive, illegal and immature. But he is 18. I know many of you want him to spend the rest of his life in prison. My first impulse was revulsion at him as well.

But when i think of the insensitive things that people did around me at that age. The hazing, the humiliation of others. I wasn't into that kind of thing at that age. I would never had been into it. But when i was a Freshmen - if someone could have created a peephole to view his roommate engaging in private moments, i'll bet many of the Freshmen would had not second thoughts.

18 year olds are adults - but they are often not fully mature. The titillation of his roommate doing something that was exotic to him was probably overpowering.

if i were on the jury of Ravi, i can't honestly say how i would rule. I would want him to be punished. But i don't think i would want to ruin the rest of his life. (and before anyone else says it...just like he ruined someone else's life). I guess a lot would depend on his demeanor - and we probably won't know that until a trial occurs.

I agree with shainski and justaboy. I hope that lessons have been learned from this.

From CNN.. our current position

CNN was unable Thursday to determine whether cit2mo was Clementi, but a laywer for the website, justusboys.com, said the posts were traced back to Rutgers.

"To me, it looks like that's the guy," says Chad Belville, attorney for Colorado-based BluMedia, which owns justusboys.com.

Belville told CNN the company will keep the posts on the site.

"We don't want to cover up what happened. This is a learning experience. This is what gay men are going through," Belville said. "I hope we can reach out to some other isolated kids who really need some place to go."

In a later statement, BluMedia said "JustUsBoys.com mourns the tragic loss of Tyler Clementi and the pain being endured by his friends and family. Tyler's death brings national attention to the fact that anti-gay bigotry is still alive and well, even in our universities. While Tyler's death has brought focus to the abuse gay men face every day, countless others continue to silently suffer. We hope that this tragedy will open the eyes of any who believe anti-gay bigotry causes no harm.

JustUsBoys.com will continue to provide a welcoming forum where gay men can openly discuss their daily lives as a minority.
The original thread can be found in the 'Garden of Memories' forum.

This is just really depressing and bizarre.

Do you think making racist/xenophobic comments helps in any way?

Wtf.

No.

But it kinda makes you wonder if this sort of behaviour would be tolerated at all in their countries of origin, and what kind of sentences they would face there.

They're gonna get off light here.

It's so sad that this happend.

This is why we need to ban together and start fighting each other so we can make it better for ourselves and the people out there who are scared and confused. Then we can mostly stop things like this happening.

Oops I mean STOP fighting each other not start.

I've heard of "hate crimes," but was unfamiliar with the term "bias crime." Basically, it's the same thing.

Of course it's a bias/hate crime - he was singled out and publicly humiliated because he was gay.

Bias crime charges weighed after NJ teen's suicide

Bias-crime charges are possible in the case of a New Jersey college student who committed suicide after a video was streamed online showing him having sex with a man.

Prosecutors say they're examining the motives of whomever hid the camera in the room of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan says that's crucial to determining whether bias charges should be brought.

Bias Crime

Commission of an offense where the person acted, at least in part, with ill will, hatred, or bias toward, and with a purpose to intimidate, an individual or group because of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Offenses such as assault, harassment, intimidation or criminal mischief may have enhanced sentences imposed upon the perpetrator if it is proved that the act was a bias crime. See N.J.S.A. 2C:44-3e. Examples of hate or bias crimes include defacing a Jewish cemetery with symbols of anti-Semitism; throwing rocks through the windows of Chinese restaurants; or attacking persons believed to be gay. The F.B.I. Collects statistics relating to such crimes.

Hate Crime

Hate crimes (also known as bias-motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her perceived membership in a certain social group, usually defined by racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, class, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation.[1]

I've been torn up about this ever since I read about it on Yahoo news last night. I read the articles on Gawker and several other news reports and the original thread here on JUB.

The news reports say, if convicted, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei could get five years. The gay rights group Garden State Equality is trying to get the incident recognized as a hate crime. If so, the penalty will be more severe. Let's hope they succeed.

The original memorial page on Facebook has been deleted, and another one has been posted. I went there to look at it, and it's completely ruined with hate posts as well as a lot of hateful photos. Is there any way to report the abusers there?

hate crime?
Are they against gay people?
Are they homophobic or just make stupid mistake/stupid games like most kids do ?

I'm wondering the same thing myself, Telstra. I'm sure there was some homophobia involved, but I think you have to prove malicious intent or something like that. I'm not a lawyer, so I really don't know.
