Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Hi John!
Mmmm, mangoes. Enjoy! (Isn't life complicated sometimes?)

I'm off to Washington tomorrow for Pride Night at the Capitals. They're playing San Jose so it shouldn't be much of a challenge...but anything can happen. I hate the Sharks, so no.problem for me rooting for the Caps. I'll be home Thursday.

Hello Johnnie , I'm glad you are enjoying your own mangoes , it must be so satisfying and gratificating to eat fruits you've grown and harvested .
I am ok , it's just that I've been with throat and ear issues these past 10 days , the weather here in the highlands is so unpredictable which affects my health

I hope you have a cool Thursday buddy

(*8*) Good afternoon, John

None of the teams I love are playing today. :( Now begins the time of that worst of all sports, Basketball. :bartshock

Parker has a very good country AM station. It has been owned by a great couple for 31 years. They sold the property, and the last day of broadcasting is December 31 to be replace by storage garages. I ran the Christian here for 24 years and we worked together on many things during that time. They are unifying force in the community. In years pasted, I would sit in with the afternoon personality and we would discuss any subject that would come to mind. Our on-air names where the Blacked Ferret, the Luscious Lizard, the Belfast Beaver. I was the Big River Bull. Their closing will be a big loss in the area.

Getting too old is a pain. Everyone and everything I love is dying, closing or move away. :grrr:

Good Sunday evening Gary, Frankie, and Thad! (*8*)

Thad, I hope you enjoyed Pride Night with the Washington Capitals the other night. I suspect that you're already on your way to enjoying some other event or activity by now.

Frankie, I hope you're doing better with your throat and ear issues. Sometimes the weather in the places we live isn't always conducive for our best health.

Gary, I haven't heard the college football playoff rankings yet, but I think your Holy Men should be in. As for basketball, it's too fast-paced and intense for me.

It's a shame that radio stations are shutting down all over the country. In small town and rural areas they especially provide a service for the community. Even in the Palm Beach County area, which was quite a bit smaller when I was growing up than it is now, there were a good number of smaller AM stations. My cousin was a DJ at the local Top 40 station in the 60s and 70s, and my ex worked the boards at a small news/talk station when we were together in the 80s and 90s. His dream was to be a TV news anchor, which didn't work out for him. These days the radio stations are shutting down, or they've been bought up by giant corporations that program crap and run a million car commercials and infomercials. The days of turning on your radio and enjoying listening to what they play is long over.

I finally put up my Christmas tree last night. It's an artificial tree, which I realize that I bought with my ex from Woolworth's 40 years ago, the first year we were together. We broke up a long time ago, Woolworth's is gone, and the mall where the store is located is gone. I enjoyed putting it up, though I still feel a bit tired and rundown from a cold that I caught last week. I think I'm finally pretty much over it, and it was pretty mild compared to colds and flus that have wiped me out in the past.

Well, today they had Hawaiian Day at the local MCC, basically doing a lot of stuff to bring some excitement to the church. So I dressed up in the only clothes I had that could be considered remotely Hawaiian-- a shirt with a blue floral print, and I wore a pair of colorful board shorts over my regular long pants, and my jacket. Hey, the sanctuary is cold, so I couldn't dress like it was a day at the beach. It does seem that attendance is going up, we're getting young straight couples coming in for some reason. I haven't been able to talk with them too much, but I'm guessing that they're refugees from other judgmental churches. Which is a good thing, since membership had dwindled to a small group of elderly lesbian and gay people who were burned out and out of fresh ideas.

Hi John! Hope your Monday went well and Tuesday is even better.

Pride Night at the Capitals was a good event...but a terrible game! The Caps controlled the puck most of the first period but could not score. I hate the Sharks (just because) but their goalie Mackenzie Blackwood who once played for the Devils was on his game. It was 1-1 late in the final period...the Caps got a double minor penalty, and managed not to be scored on in regulation time. But the penalty carried over into overtime, and the Sharks promptly scored.

And last Sunday I saw the Flyers host the Utah Hockey Club. I wore my Utah hat and maybe three of the thousands of fans wore any kind of Utah gear. New team, you know. But I was glad I did. Utah won, 4-2.

I head to Cleveland Wednesday for two plays, a concert by the North Coast Men's Chorus, and a chance to hang out with my friend Rick.

My calendar for January is...empty! Well, one book club meeting. That's all! Maybe I'll just hibernate. I got the book and wonder if I'll even like it. I was out of town for their last meeting, and they read one of my favorites, The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune.

Hello Johnnie , I haven't been doing so fine ... But I have hope that things are getting better someday... sometime

I hope you are fine My Friend

Take care , gthanks for taking time to write to me buddy

Good Thursday morning Loner, Frankie, and Thad! (*8*)

Thad, I see you're getting out and enjoying your hockey games, it looks like the Utah game was good, the Capitals game not so much. Hmm, you're in Cleveland again? I'm getting the feeling you like to go there, that it's sort of a home away from home for you. Hope you enjoyed the plays and the Men's Chorus, and getting a chance to hang out with your friend Rick.

Frankie, I'm sorry things aren't going better for you. I hope things turn up for you soon. :therethere:

I went with a couple of friends to a Christmas concert the other night, one of whom is in the band. It was a nice and enjoyable presentation, but it seemed to have a bit too much patriotic music for Christmas. OK, I'll give them the Pearl Harbor remembrance piece, since it was close to that anniversary, but what concert band starts out their performance with the Star Spangled Banner? And for their encore they did a medley of America the Beautiful and God Bless America. As I remarked to my friend, it seems they did everything but the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I know the band is in one of the more conservative enclaves in the area, but still...

The other day I got a strange phone call from a friend, saying that he had heard I was sick, which was funny, because I don't recall broadcasting it too much. I've been having a cold, but it's been rather mild, and it hasn't made me change my plans or anything. But he was worried about me, and saying stuff like he was concerned that I might be in the hospital or something (where did that come from?). Well, this guy seems to be a worrywart, consuming all these YouTube videos of all the things that could happen, from sun flares hitting the earth to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to the economy collapsing and bad things happening in the government, etc. I reassured him that I was fine, and I'm getting over my cold.

I'm finally mailing out Christmas cards to my friends and relatives, which is about all I do for the holiday these days. It's nice to think about them, and some of them respond to me, letting me know what's happening in their lives. I've got a couple of holiday dinners Friday night and Saturday, with the Rare Fruit Council and the Old Farts Club, and really that's going to be the high point of the season for me.

Hi Johnnie , I can relate , too much patriotism can be "tacky "
It's nice that you've got a Chrismas Spirit and that you take time to send cards to your friends and relatives
Doing nice things for others feels rewarding even though not all people are grateful

Have a nice Friday buddy

Hi John! Hope your weekend is going well and that you're feeling OK

I'm in cold Cleveland. But little wind, so a warm jacket makes it tolerable. Getting here was literally "a trip" - I planned to take the bus vis Buffalo but Greyhound cancelled! Apparently there was really bad weather. So I was able to rebook going via Pittsburgh. But, oh, it started pretty badly. Getting out of NYC took forever...traffic to the Lincoln Tunnel was awful at 11 PM. There must have been some closure or detour. We stopped in Newark, NJ, and somehow the driver went on narrow city streets and came to a corner where there was no room to turn. He had to back up two blocks. What?!?
Once we got out of Newark things went better, only stopping in Harrisburg and a snack stop in Bedford, PA before arriving in Pittsburgh an hour late. But I allowed plenty of time for a change of bus in Pittsburgh and nonstop to Cleveland with a great driver.

But I'm here and having a great time!

Hi, John.

Long time no post. I am tired all the time and mostly sleep.

Winter is doing well here, 43F right now (8:30AM)

My doctor closed up shop and most of the other doctors are not taking new patients. Found one who is well regarded and have my first appointment February 2. Only thing he is well into his 70s. Hope he doesn't die on me.

Only have a few cards or ecards to send. Will see to it today.

Too much basketball, need more football.

Good Tuesday afternoon Gary, Thad, and Frankie! (*8*)

Gary, it's good to see you on here. If you want to see some football, the Gators are playing Tulane this Friday in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa. The game starts at 3:30 PM our time, that will be 12:30 for you. It's listed on ESPN2, hope you can get it out there. Hope your new doctor works out for you, I suspect doctors are hard to find in your area. Weatherwise, it sounds like you're having nice chilly mornings. The temps went up here, it's breezy and rainy and humid with lows in the 70s and highs in the low 80s. We're supposed to get between 1 and 2 inches of rain tonight and tomorrow. But it will clear up and become cooler over the weekend, with lows in the 50s and highs in the low 70s.

Thad, I hope you enjoyed your time in Cleveland, with the Men's chorus and the plays, and spending time with Rick. Travel can be a pain sometimes, when you have delays and cancellations, and bus drivers that don't know how to drive, etc. I suspect you're back home, hopefully all warmed up after that chilly weather up there.

Frankie, I hope you're doing well, and that all is right with you. I find that I really do like the Christmas season, with the decorating, the cards, and everything. I took over sending out cards after my parents died. They had been the ones keeping in touch with the family, but with them gone, I realized that I had to take on the communication with my cousins, or otherwise it wouldn't get done. I'm glad I did.

Hi John! I'm safely home after a long train ride via Alexandria, VA and Washington, DC. Going to Alexandria was cheaper than going to Washington even though the train goes thru Washington to get to Alexandria. I guess they're like the airlines where you pay hundreds of dollars to fly to Cleveland but can find cut-rate airfares to California. But I enjoyed a stroll through Old Town Alexandria despite gray gloomy weather - it was only almost raining. It's actually one of my favorite cities.

How are you?

(*8*) Hi, John

I will for sure be watching the 🐊s. Looks like the Gators will have no trouble with Tulane. The Swamp is a good place to dissipate the "Green Wave". (*@*)

Right after that game will be Indiana and the Holy Men.

I live on the west bank of the Colorado in California, while Parker, AZ is the only nearby town and sits right across form us. Two time zones where very confusing, so many years ago we switched to Mountain Standard Time. I'll be watching at 1:30.

Ready for Christmas?

I almost forgot, no more PornHub in Florida!!

Florida did good today. gator.gif

I liked watching #21, Watson. No stopping a 450-pound battle tank

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing to me

Have a Nice Weekend My Friend

The Holy Men have moved on from this good victory only to be headed into the arms of Georgia which will probably make a large pot of Irish stew.

Hi John! Merry Christmas!
Hope you like this. Pandora popped it into my feed and I've been smiling all day.
I'm getting up early tomorrow for breakfast out and some shopping.
