I propose that every single gay person in the state of California uses uniforms like the ones in metta´s siggie as a form of protest.

And use that uniform en every aspect of their life (to work, to church, to everything) as a way of showing others how they are second class citizens.

I plan to do just that!

When Obama starts his term in January can he somehow overturn prop 8?

There are a lot of lawsuits being started in California, cause of this prop 8.

BTW: Does this mean that all the same sex couples that just got married in California marriage licenses become invalid?

No. The ban is not retroactive. Those marriages are valid independent of the results.

If you live in California of have access to the nononprop8 campaign, please forward this humble idea of mine... that would make quite a stand...

Imagine every gay men or woman (or bi) showing up at work, at school, at the market, at the church dressed like that... it would make quite an impact.

I posted this before, but I feel it is very important for people to know.

When the professional signature gatherers were out getting signatures, I suggested the following technique to disrupt the process. This was in response to what I felt was a silly method to convince people not to sign the petitions that Equality California suggested. It was to have gay people stand next to the signature gatherer and try to talk people out of signing the petitions in front of grocery stores. There was no way that method would have worked.

The facts:

Most of the people gathering signatures for the anti-gay marriage proposition were not volunteers, but being paid per signature.

The signature gatherers could care less about any of the propositions. They are doing it for the money. That is their motivation -- money.

The signature forms can not be photocopied per state law -- they have to be professionally printed. This of course, takes time and money to do. To have to print more petitions is costly.

What I proposed was this:

Encourage every person by email to use their personal cash and buy the signatures and blank forms from the signature gatherers. Ask them how much they are being paid per signature. Most will tell you. Pull out your wallet and tell them you'll buy the signatures with cash at the same rate they are getting paid. Then offer like $5 for each blank petition they have. I tried this out, and it totally worked.

No forms equals no signatures. A very active effort to do this would have killed this proposition before it got to the voters.

women, and blacks had a hard fight too. obama's victory proves with time and hope, this nation still is the best country in the world. it'll be a long time coming, but one step at a time.
Yeah, kind of slow on the learning curve...So long as citizens in the wrong never have to feel like there's a standard to live up to, things will work out at the rate they feel comfortable about...minorities be damned. The power dynamic continues...

I refuse to accept the "long time coming, but slowly but surely" argument. This is the 21st century. Shouldn't there be a shorter period of doing what's right as progression advances? Or will we all have to wait another century until we're "equal citizens."

^^On the whole, straight women, particularly those under 40, are far more supportive of gay rights than straight men are.

Isn't there a way to get people from all the states that have passed these hateful laws to get together and form a class action type lawsuit to take to the U.S. Supreme Court and get all of these discriminatory laws removed?

If I'm not mistaken the US constitution will always overrule any state constitution. If the US constitution is not seen to directly grant equal marriage rights, then there is another legal strategy to argue that you can't have allowed some people legal marriages, and then deny it to the rest. An equality & due process thing...

Anyway, still some hope. By the way did this turd of a proposition say anything about denying recognition of out-of-state marriages?

There are a handful of straight women here who would appreciate not being called teases and anti-gay.

We don't lump any of you into any categories and we'd appreciate it if you afforded us the same courtesy.

Alpha has provided very useful information in this thread. I understand that you might not know that there are straight women among you but please show some respect.

My apologies to Alpha then. I'm sorry if I offended her or any other person on this site.

So what are the courses of action now???

Can they collect signatures for another petition to overrule this one, to vote on the next of in 8 years elections???

I bet in 8 years we will win

I believe a proposition to repeal Proposition 8 would need either 60 or 68 percent approval by the electorate.

But yes, people could try to put such a proposition on the ballot. However it takes a lot of money to do so, and it's unlikely to pass with a supermajority like that.

Can we actually trust the Supreme Court to be on the appropriate side of this issue...yet?

I wouldn't hold my breath, even if Obama appoints a "liberal" judge to the court in 1.5 - 2 years.
