Glee! [merged]

I'd make a comment on his "wooden acting", but, uh....

31 is still too young. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an enlarged heart from substance abuse, and it just gave out (or a relapse, but I like to think the best of people). Guess we'll know tomorrow.

He did just get out of rehab recently I believe. It seems reasonable to assume it was an overdose.
It really sucks I really liked him.

I am shocked by his sudden death! It is so sad to see another Hollywood star dead probably from overdose of drugs. We will know the truth about how he died soon. So sad for his family, friends, castmates, and for Lea Michele, Rachel, his onscreen and real life g/f.

I really, really enjoyed Glee the first season, but have struggled with it ever since. And I think that I've FINALLY figured out what has bothered me.

First, Glee was set up to be a show about a high school glee club. I have noticed over and over again, very few shows about high school do well after the first couple of seasons. Why? Because the show tend to focus on the students, and invariably, those students SHOULD graduate. That's the natural progression of students in high school. And the issues that students deal with are truly cyclical. What I mean by that is that all students need to learn to deal with drugs and alcohol, sexuality (and teen pregnancy), peer pressure, bullying, etc. But on a tv show, if you revisit the same issue multiple times, it gets old and boring.

Not only that, but when kids graduate, they LEAVE THE DAMN SCHOOL!!! How many times have people come back to the school? Seriously this was crazily unrealistic. Maybe once or twice to say hi to their old teachers, but not every other week.

And secondly, I can't remember the last school-oriented show that I saw where people liked the new characters as much as they did the first characters. Most shows are essentially character-driven show where we fall in love with the characters and we want to know what happens to them. But when characters are leaving the show every couple of years, I naturally don't want to get attached to them.

I really, really wish that they had a Glee NY spinoff and just allowed Kurt and Rachel go to NYC and do their thing. Trying to do half the show in NYC and the other half in Ohio is a fiasco.

This was sad and unfortunate news to hear today. :( R.I.P. Cory Monteith.

Finn was never really one of my favorite characters, but I am nervous how these incompetent show-runners will handle him. Killing Finn off seems to be the only logical option, which will hopefully be done in a respectful manner, and have zero ties to CM's personal struggles.

I heard that they are writing off Finn's character in the third episode of the new season. The new season starts up on Sept. 26. It will be interesting to see how they deal with it.

I'd split the blame for unevenness of the show between the extreme fans and the creators/writers. It's a common problem when writing that you should always give the fans what they want because they have essentially made your brand, the problem occurs when it's not right for the story but you have to do it anyway. I feel Ryan Murphy only kept the characters on because the fans said they wanted to see them again. When they graduated they should have had maybe one come back and be a teacher/student teacher (like Finn was going to do) and then have very rare guest appearances from the others. As it ended up, they focused too much on Rachel's character when she had no ties to the school other than the friendship with Kurt but ultimately it was a separate story that would have suited a spin-off much better than a separate story arch.

Not looking forward too much to the new season of Glee. The first two episodes are Beatles tributes (I don't like the Beatles and got tired of tribute episodes around season two) but I am intrigued to see how Glee handles the Finn/Cory Monteith situation. This could either be seen as a respectful homage to a great friend or it could be seen to be playing for ratings, it all depends on how they handle it.

Am I the only one still watching, lol?!

The first episode suffered the same problem as last season: way too many rushed plots, cast of characters, and all without any real narrative. It's almost not even fun to hate-watch anymore. Most of the cliffhangers from last season were quickly mentioned or not even at all. Kitty jokes about the cat fishing story arc, Sue is back at McK, Ryder's back without any explanation, and no mention of Dreads or Sugar.

Anyway, more random thoughts:

  • I thought Lea did a good job throughout this one and there was never a moment where I thought she was phoning it in. I liked her rendition of "Yesterday," clearly foreshadowing what's to come...
  • Rachel getting a "2nd chance" is a very tired plot (along with anything involving Figgin's/Sue/Will) but I like the idea of the diner the NYC side will work at and didn't hate any of the scenes there.
  • Artie & Kitty? I don't care, and Bree was only on for 5 secs and is already annoying. Another bitchy cheerleader?
  • Tina doing the absolute most for whatever reason.
  • I like Jake & Marley better when they don't talk, their reactions to everything was spot on to how I was feeling.
  • Only in glee universe can a couple go from getting back together to an engagement within a week. I actually liked "Got To Get You Into My Life" performance (which maybe the best duet this couple has ever had) and the conversation proceeding it wasn't too bad. It was probably because it's the first time I can actually believe the great Klaine chemistry this show tries to sell so much. Kurt's POV was expressed but quickly shut down with Blaine blaming him for cheating and later when Burt compares his own 1st marriage to Kurt's impending marriage proposal. "All You Need is Love" was as over the top as one could expect, it was sweet, but the writers should have had them rebuild their relationship and had this proposal happen right before their 1st long hiatus instead.

I watched it - but the writing was still weak.

The big Kurt / Blaine proposal - well Blaine is still in high school - and as you say - they were not even "back together" and now they are engaged.

Sue becoming principal - how stupid. She should be in jail for all her stunts....

I have never been a fan of Artie's singing - and he gets a major storyline and Sam was hardly in the show...

And as you say - they got rid of last years plot threads in 5 minutes....

The show continues to suffer from poor writing and the ratings are showing it - I think the Finn tribute show will do well but after that we will see the ratings slide even further.

I've given up- all the best parts of the show- pics of shirtless Chord, etc are posted on line- so there's no need to suffer throught the horrible dialogue/plot bs....I did hear Blaine proposed- saw a clip of it on you tube- it was nauseately sappy! Just because we can marry now- doesn't mean we all should-especially teenagers!

I agree, why deprive yourself of your early twenties and be all slutty and have as much sex with as many people possible ;)

Yep. I know that Thursday night is a very competitive night for TV but I thought glee would pull in decent numbers. But nope, the ratings were bad with only 5.2 million viewers (along with dismal iTunes sales). With all the buzz that was planned (Klaine's proposal/reunion), and unplanned (Cory's death), viewers simply don't care anymore. I think the tribute episode may see a small increase, but after that the show goes on a short hiatus for baseball for a few weeks. Based on what I've read for the two followup episodes... this show would be best just to stay off.

Chord needs a haircut stat, he looks like he smells, and I can't look past that. :##:

I've always liked Glee but last season lost me. The show should have been renamed Misery. I read earlier in the thread the 2 shows should have been split and I absolutely agree. Keep Glee as the high school Glee group and a spin off in NY with the older characters.

I've not seen the new season yet, it's been shunted to one of the digital channels in Australia I didn't even know existed until last week.

Seriously @ Misery.

I thought I was too hard on the last season so earlier this summer I actually went back and watched seasons 1-3 again. My opinion remains (with some different views on some of the characters, singing voices, etc, which I won't bore with): season 1 was a really good solid season excluding the focus on Will and his wife faking her pregnancy, season 2 was the show at it's peak and kept me invested, season 3 was a snooze fest but had some of the best over all performances. Season 4 is just a mess and, yeah, they should have just done a whole new show with the graduates in NY. It looks like this split narrative is here to stay for awhile.

oh my god, I was swooning when Sam (my favorite character) sang my favorite Beatles song: "Something" (he needs to cut his hair though)

Am I the only one that likes Sam's hair? I'm not sure why, I just do. He's the only reason I watch it any more although they don't know what they're doing with his character at all. All they know to do with him is give him girls to chase. Personally I would much rather see Sam with Blaine than Kurt with Blaine.

But yeah, Glee hasn't improved. The tribute episode will pull high figures because everyone wants to see if they'll handle it well or not. The season so far has just introduced more characters and not solved anything that we were supposed to care about last season. We don't need the Cheerio's anymore, it's become such a cliché that all the cheerleaders there hate the Glee kids, that's four years ago and they needed to have developed a new storyline, not just redoing ones they've done a hundred times already.

Why can Glee not hold a storyline for longer than like two episodes (I'm being generous there)? Klaine get back together and get engaged within one episode. Kitty and Artie aren't together, then they're secret, then they're public all in one episode. Tina's mini diva moments only for her to be "grounded" every now and again are getting sick of it. Her character has just been a kind of "what the fuck do we do with her" since the others started leaving. I will say they've improved the NYC storyline though by not focusing so much on NYADA (because we don't need another school to follow with the same stereotypes and clichés). Hoping the diner situation will bring newer storylines (although are we betting at some point a new waiter will join and Rachel will fall madly in love with him?). Also Santana's scenes with Demi Lovato were far too rushed, they got together far too quickly too. Also, what happened to Ryder not being in Glee because of what Unique did? They referenced it in the opening episode but didn't explain why he's totally backtracked on his profound statement and hatred for Unique.

Very reluctant to say this but Sue has run her course. I still found moments where I laughed, a lot, at things she said but they just need a fresh character or to revisit her character because at the moment no one would be surprised if she did actually get away with murder. Also Glee has plot holes, major plot holes. This woman has been suspended for bringing a gun into school (a storyline that was dismissed very quickly) and yet she's the first one they go to when they need an interim principle? Wouldn't you appoint someone who wasn't already working at the school? I think people are getting sick of her never having any sort of repercussions, one of the best episodes for her was the funeral episode for her sister and we actually saw a real side to Sue.

Yeah Chord is a heavy chain smoker and if you've been around one before, they have that "tobacco film" which is a huge turnoff.

I just don't care for Glee anymore. I'll read the "reviews" on AVClub and maybe watch the Finn tribute episode but season 4 killed anything I loved about the show. I feel that once Finn "left" because the writers wanted him and Rachel to be "endgame", they dumped that on Kurt and Blaine who are clearly not good for each other.

I think many people were in shock that Glee got renewed for 2 more seasons when many people thought it was gonna get canceled. At this rate, season 5 should end the show especially with the numbers they are pulling in now.

Are you going watch Glee Tonight?

I will because I lost so many friends to substance abuse and this might be a nice closure.

Re: Are you going watch Glee Tonight?

I just noticed that they already selling the itunes songs of this.

so sad all around and I hoped better from the producers.

Re: Are you going watch Glee Tonight?

In all honesty, I didn't know who Cory was until he died. I've never watched a single episode of Glee, and I've only watched one YouTube clip which was posted here.

I won't be watching tonight.
