Wow...this thread is proof that no subject is too trivial for people to argue over and be nasty to each other. I'm fascinated by this obsession with comparisons and the whole "either/or mentality" that seems to have infected the western mind (and particularly America these days). Something is either the best ever or sucks royally. "You are either with me or against me". etc etc. Three pages into this and the only thing that has been proven is that "who's better" is entirely subjective. Like 'em or not Mariah and Madonna or both successful, talented, provocative, and (at least to many) attractive artists. Each has their worshipful fans and rabid detractors. There are people who actually like both or don't care for either of them. When did reality get reduced to an episode of MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch?

actually i agree janis joplin probs does have the best female voice ever... but for those saying madonna's more successful than mariah...how many no.1s has madonna had in her own country - the toughest market to break in the world...and how many has mariah had??? to be successful in europe is really not all that as in britain especially we have very shit taste in music, with dance being the most popular genre.

Boy, you know long this back-and-forth between MC and Madonna fans has been going on? I love them both. They're very different from each other, but it's great to appreciate differences. I just wish they'd do a duet so they could laugh at all of the fans that insist on pitting them against eachother.

To end this thread, both artists are good at DIFFERENT things, and they both have had massive success. They both look different, they both sound different THEY BOTH ARE DIFFERENT. Some poeple like both, some people love Madge, but hate MC, and vice versa.
My point? This is never gonna get settled, so let's just leave it like it is.

Not only are they good at different things...they're TRYING to do different things...how can we compare...and why should we? If listening to Madonna makes you happy, do that...if it's Mariah...do that...neither are better.
As for measuring their success...that depends how you measure it..in popularity, in vocal quality, in number of records, in number of varied records, reinvention, staying true to oneself, etc.
If you want to hear the best voice ever then I wouldn't suggest Madonna OR Mariah...(or any other pop singer really).

I agree with everything you've said, except the last sentence. Both Mariah (thought it pains me to say it) and Madonna have really pretty faces. Madge's just needs to be lightly pumped full of botox.

I agree. I have to give Madonna a lot of credit for doing it the hard way and not caving into the trend of keeping up a youthful appearance via a surgeon's knife. She looks fuckin fab for an almost 48-year-old woman. I can only hope I will look that good when I'm her age. Hell, I hope I look that good when I'm 40!
Madonna has freely admitted in interviews that she will not rule out the option of plastic surgery in the future. But as the most famous and talked about female celebrity in the history of mankind, I think she's setting a good standard by showing that exercise and healthy living can go a lot further than taking the "easy" route and having a surgeon carve up your face until you look like a circus sideshow freak. It really distresses me to see so many once fantastically beautiful female celebrities ruining their looks with all this nipping and tucking in a desperate and ill-conceived effort to look 20 years younger than they are.
