On Topic Discussion Monkeypox Outbreak

Re: Monkeypox cases as per July 27th 2022

if you break it down to the number of citizens in each country - Spain has 8 times more cases per 100k inhabitants than the US...
True but per capita data in communicable diseases doesn't really give us the full picture.

Spain has 4,300+ cases but the initial outbreak was about 50% centered in Madrid, so there wasn't as much dissemination of monkeypox into the other regions of Spain. I haven't seen a recent breakdown but my guess is that the concentration of cases is going to be in Madrid and Catalonia.

We're in peak vacation time in the northern hemisphere so that concentration of cases may change as international travelers descend upon Ibiza, Barcelona and other travel destinations where they will return from their vacation with a case of monkeypox.

What am I worried about? The US has over 5,000 cases but we have reported cases in 47 out of 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Only Montana, Vermont and Wyoming have not any cases of monkeypox (yet).

That means that it's everywhere, all over the US.

And we're going to spread it from the U.S. to the countries where we travel to for vacations over the next month.

Exactly: like when covid started and it was nothing in America, just some Asian or European thing, and it would disappear like a miracle; the cases of "the US" are mainly today those in SF and NYC, which has declared public health emergency, unlike anywhere in Spain (Madrid or Barcelona, their equivalent, to which you might be more right to compare, instead of pitting a 9M km2 "country" of wide deserted plains against a 0.5M km2 nation of one single deserted plain).

Like with covid-19, the US is a bigger pond that would need more time and exposure for cases to start really showing up.
The last update that I saw was that Spain had purchased about 5,000 doses of monkeypox vaccine. The vaccine is a 2 dose regimen, so that's only enough for about 2,500 people. That will not be sufficient to stop the escalation in cases.

Cases are spread all over Spain too: the higher concentration is in Madrid and Catalonia, but the two deaths (so far) were in Andalusia and Comunidad Valenciana, although it seems that they have been related to underlying conditions.

I haven't found a website tracking the cases in Spain by region or province. I would be interested in seeing the distribution if you find a tracking website for Spain.

Re: Monkeypox in London

Update on the US: now over 7,500 cases. Over 400 new cases are diagnosed every day. The current rate of infection is that cases double every 7 days.

Re: Monkeypox in London

Once again New York City is disease central. Now we have polio, too.

With all the rats it will be the Black Plague next

Re: Monkeypox in London

If that were true, I imagine the Balearic Islands would be shown in a deeper shade of brown on the map KaraBulut posted above.

Not enough shepherds in the Mediterranean kraut pie. God bless Germany.

Oh, and this is the reason why Benidorm's numbers are also lower than one would expect:

Not sure about the Canary: maybe it's breeder high season there, and the homs have been parading and shopping in Madrid and Barcelona.

I'd be willing to bet that the rats live happier healthier lives than two thirds of the city's population.

Re: Monkeypox in London

yup circuit parties was mentioned ---was actually a really informative show---METRO FOCUS---a PBS program in NYC. Also said disease needed a name change. You can't get it from a hand shake or breathing on someone ---it's not an STD per se but gay men are getting it on their ass hole and cocks and mouths more then cases seen in Africa. Once the sores dry up it's not contagious anymore. It is Very very painful and you need pain medication--doc mentioned a nerve pain treatment .:##:
