Sandy did say the trade with Buck had nothing to do with the Harvey thing, really Sandy, Really?? Cabrera will go to Savannah, den Decker will play mostly enter field. Juan Lagares in RF. Den Dekker/Brown may be L/R platoon. Other than that just a lot of mombo jumbo about why trades were made now.
All I know is that the middle of the lineup is gone and myself and a few players not so thrilled right now.

I'm not going to get upset over the trade, because those guys traded brought back a valuable young piece who has the potential and tools to be a solid major league regular for years to come. Alderson if anything has shown he can get back quality in his trading of veterans. It's a business, and it was something the Mets really were working on from before the Matt Harvey elbow injury. We're going to see a lot of Juan Lagares, Andrew Brown and Matt den Dekker in the outfield and the Mets weren't keeping John Buck anyway and Byrd playing so well helped get us a pretty damn good prospect in this Herrera kid... 19 and has good upside, developing power as a middle infielder. Not a bad consolation prize for the Mets to get from a club like Pittsburgh that was tasting the possibility of its first playoff action in over 20 years, so they overpaid some to get a free agent to be in Marlon Byrd they aren't even sure they will re-sign.

Jonathon Niese gave the Mets a great reason not to get down and dejected with the turn of recent events... Hefner and now Harvey facing Tommy John surgery on their wounded elbows and trading their RBI leader in Byrd and a power hitting, strong defensive catcher in John Buck.. he led the Mets to victory NOT just with his arm but took matters into his wn hands with the bat. Highlighted the Met's offense tonight with a ringing bases loaded, bases clearing double. Pitched an outstanding game, too... complete game three hit 5-0 shutout allowing just one walk and had five strikeouts. Coming back from his own arm injury woes earlier this year, the slight tear in his rotator cuff is now healed and hopefully with rest and certain exercises it won't recur. Certainly after all the glum news of recent days, and the Mets poor play recently culminating in the sweep by the Mets of the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers the effort by Niese tonight reminds us he still is a high quality arm and is very much a strong part of the Mets rotation even in the future. He's still pretty young, only 27 and has three more very affordable years on his contract, with the possibility of a club option in 2017. Yea, things haven't looked up for our boys in recent days but nobody's quitting on the season, at least if Jon Niese helped prove tonight and there still is a lot to be said for ending the season on a positive note heading into next year. I know sonny will, once others he trusts have weighed in and he considers everything he will be a lot less cynical and glum over the recent roster moves as I would hope all Mets fans, those here at JUB reading this and in general will as well.

Oh Saucy, poor misinformed Saucy, it’s ok I forgive you your misguiding opinion on the trade

Looking forward to today when my boy Matt den Dekker takes center field he’s not nervous just really excited it has been a whirlwind of a last couple of days for Matt the kid is ready to make us all proud. It will be great if Collins decides to play Lagares at right, the boys are no strangers to playing together having done in for a while in the minors. They know each other well know how to play off one another and will make a heck of a double punch for us in the outfield. In case you have forgotten along with great defensive plays you can expect speed on the bases plenty of power at the plate including his ability to hit homers. Matty was warmly greeting by his new teammates all wishing him great success. He also learned early that you always have to be aware of Justin Turner when he is nearby. Justin is, well….nutz, I have often commented about that here. Always a good time when you are with JT and no one knows that better than Burkhardt, watch here as Kevin tries to interview Matt yesterday before the game

So Wilmer Flores got a chance to show us what he can do at second base last night it is his natural position and the Mets want to see how he handles it. It did not go all that great but it was his first time in the majors so he needs more time to sharpen it up. It went a Hell of a lot better than the disaster when Valderspin tried it earlier this year. If you are wondering what happens to Murph if Wilber does well keep in mind that he is not exactly auditioning to replace Daniel next year but with Murph arbitration and a big salary increase next year ya never know what will happen there. Flores showed a lack of range which is exactly what we saw in the minors and then committed an error after moving back to third. To be fair Wilmer is still nagged by that ankle injury and when he gets and feels better we should see improvement. Murph is still going to get the majority of the plying time till the end of this season.

The other day I went on and on about how I did not want to address the surgery thing regarding Matt Harvey I told you guys that Matt is very much against the idea and is committed to get thru without Tommy John. I also said we will wait and see how he felt the next day when he woke up and if his feelings changed. Well when he woke up he felt even committed than ever to get thru his without surgery. If you run into Matt take my advice and do not ask him about the surgery cause he aint gonna talk about it anymore. About the only thing he will say is he will be back next year for April 1.

OMG is Daisuke Matsuzaka a slow pitcher, good grief it’s like watching paint dry just excruciatingly slow and almost painful to watch. Fortunately I could not see the game live so I was able to fast forward by DVR which I just had to do after yelling “throw the freakin ball, already”
I loved KB’s thoughts “This game is moving with the alacrity of a dead snail.”

Also in the game today will be Anthony Recker who celebrated his birthday yesterday, D'Arnaud will get the day off and ne back Friday in D.C.

Marlon Byrd (you remember him dontcha Saucy) batted cleanup and had a three-run homer in his Pirates debut

Great night for the Cyclones last night John Gant pitched a complete game shutout going 9 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out six batters. This is only the fourth time in Cyclones history that a starting pitcher went 9 and he did it with just 91 pitches.
Plus because the Aberdeen Iron Birds lost to the Lowell Spinners, we are in first place by 1/2 a game.

Sonny, we just have to agree to disagree... til you come around to my unquestionably sensible position Hey, it's KB's too. Maybe you are simply having a delayed eye opening moment of undisputable clarity! I remember Carlos Beltran, too... and though he got a WS ring last year(going to the Cards as a free agent after his trade from the Mets to the San Francisco Giants) I know having Zack Wheeler is a very nice consolation prize! Also, yep we lost RA Dickey( who has not done well going to the AL in the Toronto Blue-Jays/ Mets trade last winter... but we got not only Travis d'arnaud but also Noah Syndergaard, yet another potential ace type pitcher. You lose guys, some who are very close to their teammates but it's a business and as much as I don't like a lot of what the Wilpons have done the management team led by Sandy Alderson seems to have a very sensible, coherent plan. We will see this offseason if that assumption is correct since several areas have to be addressed, and not merely on the cheap.

That was a priceless piece with KB, Matt den Dekker and JT. So funny Matt didn't miss a beat and barely reacted until he finished the KB interview while being wrapped up by JT!

Regarding Matt Harvey it's great to hear that before a surgical option he is doing everything he can to avoid it.. talking to Roy Halladay who ten years ago also had a partially torn ligament but decided against surgery, rested, rehabbed and the injury healed and he went on to have a host of dominating seasons. It also has occurred with other pitchers.... Matt owes it to himself to try to get back as quickly as he can without aggravating his injury and risking further damage. If in a couple of weeks the new MRI shows a much less inflamed, relatively minimal tear in his elbow ligament no doubt he'll work with the Mets on a program for rest, than rehab to increase the likelihood of healing and strengthening the ligament . A recurring incident with tearing is still a possibility, but unless the damage to the elbow ligament is serious and he really would risk his career doing any other non- surgical treatment why not really look into the way Halladay and others have made it back fully without invasive surgery that while has a very high rate of recovery is STILL risky.

God this Dice-K experiment isn't working.... and though I've had to work while he's pitched the thought of rather watching paint dry than be subject to his epically time consuming efforts is not particularly pleasant to contemplate.

Carlos Torres was magnificent today.... six and two thirds innings, only four hits, no walks, one run allowed and six strikeouts replacing Matt Harvey in the rotation helping the Mets to a 11-3 thrashing of the Phillies. Birthday boy Anthony Recker celebrated #30 in style with a two run homer that helped pull the Mets away and also had two walks and scored three times. Eric Young had three hits and three RBI, including a bases loaded triple... Daniel Murphy tied a career high with four hits and added two RBI and Andrew Brown and two hits and two RBI including a solo homer. Any time we keep the Phils from winning a series is good news for Mets players and fans alike!

The player to be later in the Byrd/ Buck trade that landed us Dilson Herrera is another high ceiling player, a potential closer or set up man with high regard in Vic Black, who had an outstanding season this year and is very close to making an impact in the majors. More and more I'm liking this trade... hey sonny, I can wait til hell freezes over but you're gonna at least like this trade eventually!

Another young pitcher who is tearing up the Mets system is Gabriel Ynoa,a 20 year old Dominican hurler who is among the top players in Savannah, won the best pitcher in the South Atlantic League award with a 15-4 record and 2.72 ERA and who has as pitching coach a gem of a talent... former St. John's, Minnesota Twins and Mets star hurler Frank Viola. Great control and good stuff, if not as explosive as Harvey, Wheeler or Syndegaard. Could be another Rafael Montero type if they decide they do have to trade at least one high ceiling arm(and a quality bat like Wilmer Flores) to get a solid bat via trade. Their young first round pick from the June draft though, Andrew Church, has had a rough introduction to the pros and though the Mets love his arm and make up he will take some time... Ynoa though has come very rapidly through the system and is particularly impressive with near pinpoint control.. only 16 walks in just under 136 innings pitched.

Very good win against those pesky Phillies foes 3-2 with Dillon Gee continuing to pitch really well getting a lot of harmless ground balls too, using his sinker more. When he's working on all cylinders like this Dillon looks like a master artist at the plate. Another impressive outing for Gee going seven and two thirds innings allowing two runs on six hits, only one walk and three strikeouts. Mets powered by Ike Davis' two run homer scoring Daniel Murphy who had two hits, and two runs scored. Andrew Brown had the other RBI with a infield single scoring Murph. Young Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud also had two hits today.

So with Harvey out it is so great to see other than that Dice-K guy the rest of pitching staff playing so well. We had a terrific start from Niese the other day and yesterday Gee was on his game, the best news for Dillon is that he’s getting better with each start. If you wanna point out the best in Gee it would have to be his slider and change-up which are basically the best it can be.

How sweet to see Ike Ike’s home run which really changed the pace of the game and made me see the power just might be coming back.

Then there was of course as usual Murphy hustling around the bases like he was on fire or something and that’s the second time this week he has scored from second in a situation like that. The kid is something else I tell you. Murph is also so good in the clubhouse taking on a more leadership role while DWright is away; the guys love and respect the hard work he puts in to the game and his hustle when he is on base. Yesterday he showed once again his goofy side when Ike jumped up to catch that ball from Desmond there was Daniel also jumping when Ike went up for that line drive. Dono if you saw it on TV but it was Murph doin what we are now lovingly calling “The Murphy Deek” He usually does one of those every couple of games or so very entertaining and very much the funny kid that is the Irish Hammer.

There is some bad pitching news although it is not official yet it is looking like Bobby Parnell is done for the season although we are still not sure if he will require surgery on the herniated disc in his neck. So it will be LaTroy Hawkins who will continue in that closing role maybe Gonzalez Germen will get a shot as well.

September call ups will bring Ruben Tejada back finally he has been lost for a while now but he will play pretty often in September over Omar Quintanilla. But as the case with some of the other guys being called up from AAA Tejada's call-up will wait until AAA Vegas is entirely done with its playoffs. We will however see Vic Black, the kid we just got in that trade with the Pirates, Sunday in Washington once rosters expand. The word on him is he's got a good arm with a really good slider.

I am on Wright watch as David starts his rehab in Port St. Lucie. David has made it very clear he wants to get back and play as he said “It’s pretty much against everything I believe in to shut it down,”
I just hope that David is careful about that I would not want to see him overtaxing the muscle as he works back. He needs to be sure he doesn’t push himself and come back not 100 percent healed and he injures the hamstring again, which could even make it worse. But as we know that’s our David we know it is important for him to hustle, work, and fight his way back. It’s just who he is and always has been.

Can someone tell that hot dog guy at Citi who barks all afternoon that while it was mildly amusing back in April now it has become old tired and he needs to give it a rest.

The interesting thing about Murph is though his brother has the speed in his family, he's got 18 stolen bases! But the best thing is he is smarter about advancing an extra base than he used to be...remember him just trying to make something happen and getting thrown out and you just KNEW that would happen!Only thing Murph needs is to be a little more consistent...goes into those periods where he's scorching hot, then he slumps for a week before getting scorching hot again. nonetheless, Like you said sonny, he works so hard and gives such a great example and is so loved by the guys Murph is a key part of this club and I want him to remain at second for the foreseeable future... not everyone can remain fixtures with the club they start with but I hope Murph can be a Met for years to come,. I know he wants to gain consistency defensively and offensively, as sonny attests few work harder or care more.

Great to see Ike swatting his mighty lefty wallops.... his case is more problematic than Murph's. Can Ike be the dependable middle of the lineup force he shows tantalizing signs of but hasn't been able to showcase consistently? I hope Ike gets one more chance to prove he's the first base answer but he has to take advantage of it if he returns next year( as I hope and I KNOW sonny hopes). Goodness knows Ike is a respected, loved, goofy and endearing and it would be great to see him over a full year healthy and confident... .275-.285 with 40 homers and 110-130 RBI is in his capabilities if he just believes in himself.


Quintanilla did a good job especially defensively but Ruben really got the club souring on him... as much for the unexpected lack of intensity and hustle as his setback both offensively and defensively. Wouldn't surprise me if one of the targets of the Mets this offseason is shortstop... no superstars needed but someone who'll make the plays and show enough stick to deepen the lineup. I really think Tejada has lost his luster and is one of those like Lucas Duda the Mets aren't counting on for next year.

Tough break for Bobby Parnell, just as he has established himself as a legitimate closer he has the neck disc issues but hopefully he can through surgery or rehab come in fresh as new and healthy next spring.

Hoping David Wright does come back but like you said sonny, don't want to see him risking his health going into next season overtaxing that hamstring. He's gotta make sure it's 100% and he doesn't aggravate it in his determination to get back for the last weeks of the season. It is in keeping with David and his character, his dedication and professionalism and leadership even with nothing to gain from playing again he feels he owes it to himself, his teammates and everyone to return to the lineup before the end of the season. You're spot on sonny, we never want that to change about our DWright.

Well, bad news about Ike Davis.. just as he is getting comfortable at the plate he's likely out for the season with the strained oblique muscle curse. Hopefully this isn't the end of Ike in a Met uniform, though the Mets do have to wonder if they will accept even a modest raise for arbitration eligible Ike. It's frustrating, with his personality, talent, the chemistry and love he has with his teammates and hopefully the Mets will sufficiently upgrade elsewhere and give Ike one more opportunity to become a core to the future of the Mets. Hope sonny can update us on his spirits, got to be tough right now he can't build on his improved plate results and end the seson on an optimistic note.

Looks like the Mets will bring back manager Terry Collins for next season.... reading inn ESPN.com how his players really are going to bat for TC in enthusiastic support for a return, and I'm glad because this guy bleeds baseball and really has grown and matured as a manager. As tough and demanding he may be, Terry also really cares about his players and supports them and has become very good at communicating and getting them to play hard for him(hell, NOBODY blames him for Valdespin... who was in his own universe, lol!)


Mets thrashed the Nats Saturday 11-3, scorching at the plate with 17 hits and riding another very strong performance from Zack Wheeler who went six and two thirds innings allowing five hits, two runs striking out three and most importantly for his development continuing to work on his command and control allowing only one walk. What really pleases TC is how quickly Zack's mindest has gone from trying to beat the opponent with throwing it by them to using his pitches intelligently and just getting outs any way he can...trusting his fielders while of course when the need arises he can take it another notch. That's got to be the most heartening development of all, his maturity and willingness to adapt rather than be the young macho stud blowing everyone away, risking walking a ton in the process. He's becoming already a pitcher, not just a thrower and while not as outwardly fiery as Matt Harvey no doubt he's showing an icy "silent assassin" quality that compliments Harvey's very well.

Mets lineup up and down was getting the job done yesterday... Eric Young, Daniel Murphy, Josh Satin and Juan Lagares had three hits apiece leading the balanced onslaught.

A bullpen meltdown by the bogus law firm of Atchison, Rice and Germen allowing for four runs to score(three in the eighth, allowed by Germen giving up hits with inherited runners on base) after starter Jon Niese was pulled after five and two thirds innings after suffering from leg cramping prevented a Mets weekend sweep at Citi over the Nationals. Instead the Nats came back 6-5 and took the final game of the series. Thankfully after all the injury woes to Mets players lately, pitchers in particular, it does appear that it was just mild cramping and there is no damage to Niese that would curtail the remainder of his season, fortunately.

Young centerfielder Matt den Dekker had his first major league home run, a shot that was estimated at 438 feet.... definitely memorable having the first home run of your major league career be an impressive moon launch. Matt also had another hit and other offensive stars were Eric Young with two hits and two runs scored, Daniel Murphy with two hits and two RBI, and Lucas Duda also with two hits and two runs plated. Lucas playing first in the absence of Ike Davis due to apparent season ending oblique muscle tightness. Like I mentioned in my previous post, hoping sonny can update about Ike's situation...it definitely has to be frustrating for the young man with all the problems he's had getting on track this season, and just when it appeared the bat was finally coming around some crappy news.

There is no sugar coating it Ike is bummed. Why do these things keep happening to one of the nicest guys you would ever hope to know just a sweetheart of a guy if ever there was one he just does not deserve the bad breaks he keeps getting. That oblique actually started bothering him a little on the west coast trip but it was not all that bad, then when he came back home all thru the home stand he felt fine. Then when he went to Washington it started acting up again. I joked that maybe his body did not like sleeping in all those hotel beds and missed his comfy mattress at home. In any event he said he expected to travel with the team to Atlanta last night and then fly back to get an MRI tomorrow here in NY and then we will know what’s next. Just like with Harvey I am not going to speculate on what is next for Ike or how it will affect his career with the Mets until he hears more from the doctors tomorrow. Yesterday he was Comfortable although he did feel some discomfort making certain kinds of moves and especially when he sneezed or coughed. After Ike sees the doctor I will update you guys. I’m thinkin Ike prolly won’t go on the disabled list because rosters expanded yesterday.

So how happy was I to see Matt den Dekker hit his first major league homer. a Second Level Dekker
And of course the guys all givin him the silent treatment when he came in always love when they do that, this time started buy Murphy who has really bonded with Matt the two boys found a common ground in their love for watching and following college football and better yet Matt is a Gaters fan which is a team Murphy pretty much worships. Daniel Murphy is 12-for-21 with 6 RBI and 7 R in his last 5 games

Someone at MLB has to take ESPN to task for the scheduling of the games they televise. Why do they always insist that a game be played late on a Sunday. In this case it’s even worse for the Guys cause they played last night had a plane ride to Atlanta with at least a couple of players not getting to sleep till 4am so basically a nap till they play another game this afternoon on little rest. Horwitz quipped the team wore PJs on the flight this morning, Oh Jay To make it worse Dice-K is on the mound and the way he snail’s pace thru a game I hope some of the boys don’t fall asleep out there between pitches.

Update, Ike has now resolved himself to the idea that his season is over, oblique is really bothering him now again and expects no good news today at the doctors. Ike expects to head on home to Arizona, he still needs permission to do that but I hardly expect that if the news from the doctor is as bad as Ike expects it to be the team will insist that he remain in NY. I will let you guys know how it ends up later today when Ike gets back from the doctor and talks to Collins. He already made his good buys to the team last night that's how sure he is that it's over

The only thing I really want over..okay, two things... Dice-K....rolled the dice and the Mets crapped out. Three unimpressive starts in a row and since watching him take forever to pitch is torture, no need to subject the Mets or their fans to this washed up act any longer. And Germen Gonzalez I don't want to see in another close game at all this year. He's got stuff but every time he's out there recently he seems to accomplish little but get banged around and take the Mets out of games that are winnable. A lot of off performances from Aardsma and Atchison too. Yesterday was pitiful and I'm glad I had to work instead of tuning in... 13-5 and seemed from the descriptions and news even worse.

Thanks sonny for the Ike update, and it does suck that Ike's season is over just as he was starting to get himself going. Appreciating you keeping us updated and just wish for the best for Ike, that he can come back next year and prove he's the real deal and not just a guy who never was able to get his act together at the plate.

Another solid itching effort gone to waste as Carlos Torres( who while not being a world beater I'd take any day over the horrid Dice-K these days) goes seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.. his major mistake was giving up a two run homer in the seventh to Adrelton Simmons of Atlanta after giving up a solo shot earlier in the inning to Atlanta catcher Evan Gattis. Final score was 3-1, Mets only run scored by Eric Young on an RBI double by Daniel Murphy. Pitching very well for Atlanta was Kris Medlen who went seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out nine.

Ike Davis will now rest and recoup in Arizona and yes he does plan on some winter baseball activity more on that later. So what’s next for Ike with the Mets; well I have my thoughts as you can imagine. First of all let me start by saying I fully expect Ike back in a Mets uniform at first base in 2014. Yeah yeah I know you have read stuff about how his Mets days are over and even some who have suggested his baseball career is over, please. He will be fine in about 3 weeks and back to 100%; right now still in a little discomfit but hopefully as he heals that will dissipate. He does have a little trouble sleeping casue if he rolls on that side it wakes him but he will be fine. As to the “evaluation” by Alderson I don’t think this time away will make any difference simply put Sandy has already seen enough and knows Ike well enough to move on to a decision about next year nothing Ike could have done in the few weeks left in baseball would have changed much and his injury won’t affect Sandy’s decision. This just gives Lucas Duda a chance to how what he can do and there is nothing wrong with that but trust me thou I love Lucas but he is no Ike Davis. Ike’s average and on-base percentage have been positives since his return, but he knows and has himself disappointed with his power production which he is determined to improve. As to the salary thing Ike is now eligible for arbitration (as is Murph) Ike made just over $3million this season, now according to the rules if he goes to arbitration Ike must make at least 80% of what he is making now keep in mind Arbitration-eligible players like never receive a pay cut and almost always receive a raise. So what are we looking at here maybe $4 million which is not a lot of money for the Mets and he would certainly deserve at least that. Oh sure the Mets could take another look at a player who might turn out to be a valuable cleanup hitter but why? Better they should for that kind of money they should just stick with Ike.
No, the money thing will not factor in here just sandy weighing all the options and coming up with the right answer which is Ike Davis at first next year. What I expect to happen is that both Ike and Lucas will come to spring training next year and compete for the job with Ike clearly winning. Just my opinion and besides it helps me get thru the cold winter knowing Ike will be just fine next year.

Not much news on Matt Harvey that swelling has not gone down at all so still no idea when he will get back to the doctor, The swelling has got to subside in order got the doctor to get a better look as to make an opinion on Tommy John surgery which as I have told toy guys Matt is in dead set against.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is not going away anytime soon (sorry Saucy) As Terry Collins put it “we need him” that mostly because because Wheeler may be shut down soon; the thinking is that Zack may have only about 25-30 more innings before they shut him down.

With the sad news about Ike at least something good happened as well with Daniel Murphy have been named NL Player of the Week. Murph hit .448 (13-for-29) with a league-leading five doubles. He tied a career high with four hits Thursday against the Phillies last week, he led the National League with five doubles and tying for first in runs scored (7) and hits (13).His five doubles last week gave him 30 for the season, good for 10th in the N.L, while his 158 hits rank fifth.

Also in the feel good news department as I told you guys last week Kevin Burkhardt has landed a play by play gig with FOX for this year’s NL football games. Soooooooo proud of Kevin so deserving a very talented kid and now a National audience will get to see what we have known for years and that is the outstanding play by play he does . His awesome voice, humor, awesome personality and knowledge of the game is so well suited for that job My best to KB and the only advice will be try and not confuse ERA and completion percentage
KBs first game will be this Sunday with the Jets/Bucks along with John Lynch and won’t that be a great combo to listen to. Not to worry about Kevin and SNY he will continue to do Mets coverage as well juggling both assignments whenever he can; that will include returning to do most of Mets Hot stove when it begins in mid November.
