NY Mets 2013

Lemme just add a thought to my Ike post above ^, I wanted to add to it but ya know there is that annoying 10 minute edit rule so I had to make another post. I love JUB and respect the heck out of the administrators (*8*) but why they want give us at least an hour to add/change posts is beyond me; but I digress…
The Mets have too many other needs to spend money on first baseman. AND if the Mets are stupid enough to let Ike go and then he becomes “IKe Davis” again they are going to wish they had not let him go. Finally I would hope that there is little doubt that both Alderson and Collins would choose Ike over Lucas

Was happy to see Daniel Murphy get player of the week in the NL, some good news amidst the misery of injuries and losses. I'm in a quandary over Ike. Would love to see him succeed as a Met, but some days he just drove me nuts with his futility. I think I want the Mets to give him another shot. Need a win this afternoon vs the Braves, lets go Mets!!

Great win in Atlanta for our boys preventing getting swept...5-2 win featuring another great performance by Dillon Gee who went seven innings allowing just four hits , one walk and striking out five. He also helped his cause knocking in a run with an RBI single. Offensive stars today were Andrew Brown with a two run homer early, Lucas Duda who launched a homer and had three hits on the day, and Daniel Murphy with two hits including a triple and who scored on Brown's homer. Gee has done a magnificent job after a rocky start this year and looks like he's a master out there with his command and control.

Nice summary, Saucy! A solid win with contributions from all quarters, big hits, masterful starting pitching and a good bullpen performance. Ah, to have this most days.....coming soon to a Mets team near you.

Today's summary... Wheeler wild, left after five innings giving up five hits, three runs( two earned) and five walks with three strikeouts in a dreary 8-1 throbbing in a late season interleague game playing the Cleveland Indians. Mets were muzzled for six innings by ex-Met farm stud Scott Kazmir, who after a few good years with Tampa has been trying to regain at least some of the stuff and command that made him such a promising young arm.. with the Indians being his latest stop in his attempt to salvage his career. Cleveland's bullpen did the rest, the Mets bullpen assured our boys would be done in. Gonzalez Germen, Scott Atchison and Aardsma just couldn't handle it. The bullpen has become a real concern, the ineffectiveness has become more than an occasional hiccup and Aardsma and Germen are two of the most ineffective recently.

Wheeler realized quickly his shoulder was flying open and release was off, not hitting spots but often missing wide. After showing so much improvement in his mechanics and efficiency, he reverted to his earlier appearances with the Mets and was pissed off about it. Matt Harvey may show more emotion while on the mound but Zack is quietly confident and intense and definitely bent on working hard to rein in his control, and pitch more efficiently. In recent outings he has noted he would rather go deeper into games, mix his pitches and use his fielders more than to go max effort and throw 98,99 all the time and not have command and only last five innings. No doubt Zack will make it a point as he approaches likely his last four starts of the season to end the season on a high note, becoming more of a pitcher and not just a thrower and making him even deadlier when he uses his heater.... opposing batters won't know what the hell is coming.

I guess it's nice to let Marlon Byrd and John Buck go to a team still in contention. Hey, the Phils did it with Michael Young...and before that, with Hunter Pence.

So which of them gets an NL Championship ring? Based on my happy experiences at their beautiful ballpark, I like the Pirates.

I would like to see the Pirates go far into the playoffs... such a great history and after two decades of mostly falling to the depths due to the rise of big money and big budgets that a middle sized market like Pittsburgh could not adjust to, they finally are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of futility. Never been to their park, always remembered on the Mets games with the Pirates the location of the city being on the confluence of three rivers. Not much reason to watch the Pirates in recent years but their new home is a beauty... how often do you get there, clear across the state, Thad?

UGH. Just UGH!!! Yesterday was bad, today wasn't any better as Jon Niese got hit around for six runs on nine hits in six innings after looking so good in recent starts after his recovery from the partial rotator cuff scare. Scott Atchison relieved and on cue allowed three more runs to score effectively blowing the game away final score 9-4 for the Indians. One nice thing as at least Dave Aardsma made it through unscathed, for once!

Justin Turner had a couple of hits and drove in two runs. Matt den Dekker added two hits and an RBI. Scary thing is as bad as this weekend has been so far, we have Daisuke Matsuzaka, aka Sliced and Diced-K, going in the series finale tomorrow afternoon!:(

Well, I was a little premature writing off Dice-K while talking up Carlos Torres as Daisuke Matsuzaka was actually very good Sunday giving up just one run and three hits in five and two thirds innings before leaving the game after getting struck by a line drive for precautionary reasons. Eric Young had the game winner late knocking in Matt den Dekker. Justin Turner had his second homer and is on something of a tear, and Daniel Murphy got on five times going 2-2 with a double and three walks.

Monday and Carlos Torres was a different story as he gave up four home runs and Gio Gonzalez one hit the Mets for a complete game 9-0 victory at Citi Field. Only other blemish for Gonzalez was a couple of walks spread out but he was dealing, and the Mets nearly were no hit in their own ballpark. It looks like Ruben Tejada is joining the call ups (mostly held back procedurally to delay free agency from 2016 to 2017) for September and also Bobby Parnell will need to undergo surgery for the disk problem in his neck that has sidelined him over the last month. Oh yeah... Frank Francisco FINALLY made it back to the Mets on Sunday in relief of Dice-K and didn't fuck up!!!

Really, the season can not end soon enough. It appears that without some of our regulars like DWright, Harvey, Parnell, et al, the rest of the rotation and lineup are getting a bit overmatched. This is especially true if guys like Murph have an off day or two. Will just have to watch as the youngsters get some seasoning for next year. Perhaps we can spoil someone else's dance. Lets go Mets!!

A little scare yesterday with Justin Turner who felt tightness or as he described “cramping” in his hammy I sure hope it’s nothing much cause he was finally getting to play on a fairly regular basis and was performing really well having great at bats bringin em home and handling defense beautifully. JT like so many Mets are playing really hard right now trying to finish respectfully. I know first hand how hard those guys all worked and how much finishing strong means to them. Justin especially hard he is such a great kid I mean a seriously great kid and does not deserve to have his season interrupted now. Turner is going to get an MRI today on that hamstring, he is not expecting it to be all that bad it only felt a little tight after rounding the bases but trainer Ray Ramerez said “your done for today” and shut him down. JT experienced any kind of problem like that his whole life he said it only felt like a cramp or something not anything serious, so we will see how it looks after they take the picture and find out what exactly is going on in there. He really thinks it’s no biggie and be back in the game in a couple of days Your lips to Gods ears JT.

David Wright continues his quest to get in a few games before the season sends, it really mean a lot to him to play a bit before the season ends he needs to prove to himself he is good to go. He has been in NY since the minor league season pretty much ended in Florida and he had “nobody to play with” David has been doing all baseball activities except run the bases. He is running however and has done some cutting and arcs while running which will prepare him for base running. A big part of all this is that he is with his boys cheering em on motivating them and being there for them and that means a lot to David and his boys.

Matt Harvey still thinks he will avoid undergoing Tommy John surgery the last few days he has felt great and is now more confident than ever he will not need the surgery He will visit the doctor next week, I think he said Monday, and will know more then. But if the news is not as good as he expects it won’t end there he is going to get as many opinions as he can. As of yesterday Harvey is just icing the elbow doin a little bike riding.

Ike Davis doing pretty good should be 100% soon. Sleeping well not much discomfort now making plans for some sort of off season baseball activity soon fully returning to baseball in spring

Bobby Parnell should be ready for the start of spring training after having surgery yesterday to repair a herniated disk.
Scott Rice also had surgery yesterday to repair a sports hernia it went very well.

So kiddies that your injury updates for the day I leave all the game analysis in the very capable hands of my boys Saucy and Syam.

Wanted to share this adorable shot of Recker who took his new puppy on the road with him. Dogs name is Sheya

Nice pic and thanks for the personal injury updates, sonny... hopefully the Mets injury bug won't screw up JT's remainder of the season as he's been playing some of his best ball of the season especially at the plate. Hoping whatever Matt decides after the MRI it will put him in the best position to heal as fast as he can...if Dr. Andrews( and he's the best) tells Matt surgery is the best option, Matt should really consider Dr. Andrew's record in getting pitchers back good as new. If Dr. Andrews finds that the elbow ligament tear was limited and could heal like Roy Halladay( and a few others) with rest and an exercise program he obviously has to consider that, and as you have written prefers going that route anyway which gets him back on the field next spring instead of waiting til at least August to do any baseball activity because of the longer healing process from any Tommy John surgery.

Gotta love DWright and his determination to get back to playing even if it's only for the last week of the season. Mets aren't going anywhere and another disappointing losing season is obviously frustrating to him but he wants to be on the field and end the season on a positive note. He loves the guys and playing baseball and they love him, and seeing him out there will be a comforting sight to Mets fans looking for things to be positive about as we head into another uncertain, but this time hopefully productive, winter in terms of really getting the Mets back on track to being serious players in the NL East.

Glad Ike is doing better and happy to be reading that the Mets will not non-tender him making him a free agent and don't feel even if they have to go to arbitration paying upwards of 3 mil is too much at this point. Obviously they have a decision to make between Ike and Lucas Duda and it appears more certain than ever if Ike does get traded, Lucas would be the first baseman as he really is much more comfortable there than in the outfield. I do think there is a strong pull in the Mets organization though to see if they can get something out of Ike at first base, that he should get one more opportunity to establish himself as the Mets long-term answer at first base but Ike must show renewed confidence defensively and he has to have a swing that won't produce exceptionally long funks that make him a black hole essentially in the lineup as he has suffered through the last couple of seasons. In the end, I think the Mets will keep one and it will be Ike but I'm a little more confident at least hitting wise in Lucas as seems much more comfortable when he plays first at the plate. I hope sonny doesn't mind my being torn on the subject as Ike is such a great guy loved by everyone I would love it if he could prove all the doubters wrong and emerge next season.

As for the game, Dillon Gee was as we Italians say mezza mezza... not too good, not too bad but gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings, much less crisp and effective as he has been in the past couple of months. Met lose to Washington at CitiField 6-4... best Met performances were by JT with two hits and an RBI before being pulled, Matt den Dekker with two RBI and a hit, and Travis d'Arnaud had two hits. Washington powered by the scorching Jayson Werth with a home run and two doubles, and homers by Adam LaRoche and old friend Scott Hairston.

Turner was right has only a slight strain of his hamstring, he should be able to playing again in a couple of days
DWright felt good after running the bases this morning and will go at it again tomorrow looks like he may be back in the lineup next week

Thanks again sonny for the update... good news on both the JT and DWright fronts, hope things continue to go well and we soon see them both on the field.

A really nice game by Zack Wheeler, MUCH more efficient and in control though the Mets lost 3-0. Zack goes seven innings, allowing just one run on eight hits but importantly allows only one walk and strikes out six. When he uses all his pitches and maintains his command he young man is very tough to rattle and score on. Only real mistake was a homer in the sixth allowed to Ryan Zimmermann but very deftly got out of a couple of jams. Rookie reliever Vin Black, acquired in the trade with Pittsburgh of Marlon Byrd and John Buck, got roughed some in he eighth allowing a couple of runs on three hits. Mets highlight offensively was rookie outfielder Juan Lagares with two hits.

Daniel Murphy will bat 3rd again this afternoon, I wish Collins would Stop fucking with Murphy’s lineup position he needs to bat second in case Terry has not noticed Murphy has his best at bats there. Why does he keep moving him to the three spot where he struggles???? Hey Terry! Ever heard the expression if it ain’t broke…..? Well Murph ain’t broke so don’t fix him, don’t make me come over there

BTW is it just me or has D’Arnaud been a big disappointment; he played well in AAA but not now against the big boys; I mean Just how many times did he visit Zack on the mound yesterday to get the signs straight anyway. Sure wish Recker, who will catch the Thursday game this afternoon, would get more time behind the plate or bring Buck back although I am still not sure where Vic “Mohawk” Black is gonna fit in, closer? And cause I dono what Dilson Herrera is supposed to do for us, I still say trading Buck was a dumb ass move. I do love our new outfield however and not missin Byrd all that much….yet

So far Flores has not shown me much I understand he is still hurtin a bit, but still.

How exciting is it whenever den Decker comes to the plate or goes after a ball, nice!

Really pissed that the Mets did not promote Kirk Nieuwenhuis for the September call ups he had been playing really well in AAA so what’s up with that? Doubt you will see Wally Backman either, I don’t think you will see Backman and hitting Coach Dave Hudgens on the same team anytime soon. Wally’s “I will fix Ike” comment ruffled Dave’s pride a bit. Actually a couple of Mets people including Alderson got their panties all in a bunch over Wally’s comment. Wally Backman is an outstanding knowledgeable baseball man and The Mets are lucky to have him. seriously, those ladies need to grow up. Sadly I don’t think Wally will be a part of the Mets next year even thou he would make an excellent coach. I also firmly believe that Collins will return to manage in 2014

Nah Saucy I don’t mind you calling Ike a “Black Hole” at first but clearly the choice between Ike and Lucas needs to be Ike, love the Dude but he aint no Davis especially his defense. I will admit Ike has his problems but he continues to get it all figured out he has to he just works so darn hard at it. Hopefully he will still be a Met in 2014 but whatever team he plays for next year will reap the rewards of the Ike Man.

So many good points, sonny... believe me I'm not calling Ike a "black hole" but just talking about how frustrating and hopeless his first couple of months were at the plate the past two seasons( though to be fair last year he was coming off the ankle injury followed by the Valley Fever scare, with precious little time to really work off the rust). I'm a big booster, and though I would be happy to have Ike or Lucas establish themselves as the Mets core guy at first I agree that Ike's defense gives him te edge and I really do hope he can show everyone he's worth being patient with.

It does look unfortunately like the Mets organization just doesn't want Wally Backman as future manager... guess they see too much Bobby Valentine in him, too headstrong and eager to butt heads if pissed off. Terry has learned to be a better corporate guy, though I love him and he does have the respect of the guys and tries to get the best out of them while retaining his old passion and dedication. He learned to subordinate his ego and unfortunately while we all love Wally he's just not Sandy Alderson's ideal guy to manage the club.

I don't know about Kirk... he was erratic finishing up the year in Las Vegas but he does seem to not be in the Mets organization's plans as they look more to Matt den Dekker to fill the hustle/defense/speed/power role.

Mets lost today 7-4 getting swept at home by the Nats 7-2 despite a solid effort by just recalled Aaron Harang, another grizzled veteran acquired and called up to give the Mets some innings. Harang pitched six innings giving up three runs, four hits and walked three while striking out ten. Unfortunately as Mets starters have been doing in this series he gave up three home runs tto Washington hitters and the relief effort could not keep the Mets in it lowlighted by a stinker of an appearance by Frank Francisco(we KNEW it had to happen)giving up a pair of runs and not endearing himself to Mets fans( BIG surprise there!)

Mets highlights were Daniel Murphy's 35th double and RBI.... Anthony Recker's two hits and RBI and Eric Young's two hits, stolen base and run scored.

Another young pitching stud Mets fans should keep their eyes on is young Gabriel Ynoa, a Dominican native pitching in Savannah who won 15 games in the regular season and South Atlantic League pitcher of the year. He pitched wonderfully in Savannah's playoff game tonight going seven shutout innings in a 6-0 five-hitter Savannah romp, with relief help from the still promising Met farmhand Jeurys Familia. A win tomorrow night by another intriguing young arm( and New York area local) Steven Matz would win the South Atlantic playoff championship for the Savannah Gnats. Some good news for Mets fans, for once!

Saucy, I sincerely believe that the Mets brass do indeed have patience when it comes to Ike. Sandy loves the kid and knows as many of do that Ike has a lot of untapped power, I don’t know what to do with Lucas he can play first now and again next year but I want Ike Davis to be the Mets first baseman next year. He is resting comfortably right now taking it easy but will be moving towards some baseball activity soon I will fill you in when he does.

Wally Backman came close to quitting last year not a good situation between him and the Mets at all right now too bad cause I got to see first hand how he handles his guys and it is impressive to say the least. When you mess up expect to hear about it from Wally but with respect he does it in a teaching way so you learn from the experience. But get him hot and watch out  I will never forget one day I was in the Bison’s clubhouse and Wally stormed in looked at me and said “I’m gonna need you to step outside now son” Wally waiting to keep was about to happen private between him and the player. I knew someone was in big trouble maybe it was the smoke comin out of Wally’s nose and ears not sure but somethin was a commin. After, I asked the kid who got talked to, and noticed I said Talked to, Wally does not scream at the players, umpires sure but not his boys. Anyway the kid told me how great Wally was in explaining what was bothering him and it was a real learning experience and not a bawling out. That’s Wally a great teacher and father figure to his team.

I too like what I saw from Aaron Harang, with some of the starters all having erratic starts it was good to see.

As to grandma Frank Francisco oh boy he’s back and it’s the same ole same ole very very scary to see him waddle out to the mound I’m thinkin nothing good is gonna happen here. And oh yeah did he plunk Jayson Werth on purpose? Would not surprise me Numb nutz says no he was just erratic well yes he IS erratic pretty much all he is.

David Wright continues to say he wants to play as many games as he can before the season ends I am just not sure I am ok with that. Looking at what just happened to Jetter it worries me that David will come back to soon and maybe he should shut it down go down to his beloved Virginia and take some time off to fully heal but he will have none of that talk. The good thing is that it will put Murphy back in the 2 hole where he is most comfortable. Wright by the way will put a ring on his longtime girlfriend Molly’s finger just after Christmas, those two finally tying the knot.

Back to Murphy and his batting order. Murph never complains it’s not in his nature he will play any spot Terry puts him on but I happen tom know he prefers second best of all.
I don’t know if you guys saw last week when the Mets were out of town and the opposing team played Daniel’s number one entrance song “I'm Shipping Up To Boston” by Dropkick Murphy. I don’t think that team realized that it was Murphs song it was just something they were playing along with some others but Murph got a big kick out of it put his hand up and said “here I am” Duda was on first and shouted “Hey, you must be up”

Speaking of Murphy here he is doing his acrobatics.

Great pictures! Thanks!

I regret to say I didn't get to a single baseball game this season. Times were incredibly tough. But last year I took the bargain bus to Washington and Pittsburgh once each, and also saw the Carolina League Wilmington Blue Rocks with my brother and nephew.

Here's hoping for better times!! (I see a light at the end of the tunnel...or is that just a freight train?)

Great hearing from you Thad :D I'm afraid for the Mets maybe that is a freight train a comin and it's a comin right at us :help:

Terry Collins had some really awesome things to say about Daniel Murphy yesterday and in case you missed it I wanted to share it here. Collins praised Murph for staying in the lineup down the stretch while battling nagging issues. Friday's game will be Murphy's 145th of the season, and he could play in 161 of the team's 162 games this year. He will bat third against the Marlins. “Make no mistake, Dan's beat up," Collins said. "He plays so hard, he's always beat up. He slides hard, he dives for balls. That takes its toll on the season. He comes to the ballpark, he wants in the lineup. He never asks for a day off. That sends a huge message to all those young players. "He's been our man of steel for sure." Collins also credited Murphy for being a presence in the lineup while the big bats around him have been sidelined or traded away. Murphy is hitting .313 in his last 28 games, and is batting .281 with 10 homers and a career-best 68 RBIs on the season. He also has a career-high 18 stolen bases. "Dan has been the backbone ever since David went out," Collins said. "He's the one guy that teams know is a professional hitter. To everybody in every club he's the dangerous guy in our lineup. And we needed that. We need to be able to lean on that type of guy."
Nicely said Terry, Yup that’s our boy Murphy ..|

Justin Turner feeling a bit better but looks like he may be out till at least next weekend hope to know more later today. Meantime JT gets bored easily and when he does he just gets mischievous so yesterday decided to take part in the interview process. Hey JT I’m gonna tell Burkhardt you’re trying to take over his job while he is on assignment with FOX and what the heck you are holding in your hand you crazy wacky kid. ;)

Well, after getting swept by the Nats, and outslugged by something like 13-0 in HR's, it was nice to see the Mets get a win vs the Marlins, with 2 HR's of their own from Andrew Brown and a big 3 run shot from Lucas Duda. Niese pitched a solid game, although he got touched up by Giancarlo Stanton for two dingers. Stanton is a monster, kind of in the same boat as many Mets hitters with little support around him. Latroy Hawkins closed out the game, and let me tell you I am verrrrry surprised to see the quality pitching Hawkins has provided this year. I personally would never have signed him, but he has proven me wrong. Let's go Mets!!
