Libby got the partisan shaft - and now Georgie boy is using his "get out of jail free" card

chance exactly how did Libby get the partisan shaft. The judge was a republican appointed by Bush himself.

Which democrat was involved in this that you base that statement on?

Hitler was a genius. He was simply insane. Kinda like Hillary.

Yeah, that's why he completely screwed the Wermacht in the execution of the war, and only listened to his yes-men. Hitler was a POLITICAL genius, in that he managed to successfully marginalize and demonize the opposition and form a cult of personality around himself. In terms of actual execution of power and conducting war? He was a fool.

Niether Hillary nor Bush are comparable to Hitler. Don't try to compare them.

What Libby did wrong was to take a bullet for the VP and the Pres by failing to cooperate with the Special Prosecutor and lying to the Grand Jury in order to cover up the false claims used to take us to war. What Bush did wrong was to obstruct justice by giving Libby a pass in order to insure his silence.

It was about Valire Wilson and yellow cake in Niger, and blowing the cover of a non-covert "covert CIA operator/operative" . And her pissed off husband.

No, it was all about manufacturing a basis to go to war and silencing critics.

Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) issued the following statement on Bush's decision:

Today's decision is yet another example that this Administration simply considers itself above the law. This case arose from the Administration's politicization of national security intelligence and its efforts to punish those who spoke out against its policies. Four years into the Iraq war, Americans are still living with the consequences of this White House's efforts to quell dissent. This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice."

I suppose the Senator felt she had to say something about this appalling Administration’s contempt for the law or for justice when either are an inconvenience. This commutation is just another example of this, most likely to save Cheney and Rove's and perhaps the President's hides.

But I would stay very quiet if I were you. Better refrain from bringing Mrs. Clinton’s statement to people’s attention lest it remind voters once again of the tawdry pardons her husband gave on the last day of his presidency to their family and felon and refugee from justice friend's families who were big financial supporters of theirs. That was an equally disgraceful and shocking chapter and one that has been brought back to life, only too vividly, by the Libby commutation with all the bad taste and lack of scruples that was also shown by the Clinton White House then when she was apparently so powerful a player. Both actions were appalling, amoral and degrading to American justice and its standing in the world. No one, except the crooks want more of either.

This is just further proof that this administration is corrupt from top to bottom and believes it is above the law.
How sad Libby is a hero among conservatives who believe he was wrongly persecuted. Libby will probably become the next Oliver North.
North, who also lied to congress during the Iran-contra mess, went on to be an icon for the Reagan administration. His conviction was overturned and he went on to a successful life as an author and commentator.
In Washington, it appears that CRIME DOES PAY!
I am sure Cheney is breathing a lot easier now that he doesn't have to worry about Libby dropping the other shoe on his involvement in the leak.
Oh wait, I forgot, the White House was not the source of the CIA leak, how silly of me
I am sure Cheney had a lot to do with Bush making the decision to commute Libby's sentence, which I believe, after the dust settles over all the outrage thus has caused, will end up as a full pardon.
18 more months of Bush and his gang of lies and corruption. How will we survive?

:D :D :D As an outsider it is certainly good entertainment watching U.S.Presidents follow each other in handing out questionable pardons. In U.S.politics it appears that one side is no better than the other. Maybe the best way is to remove the power of presidential pardons from that office. The only thing about the U.S. that I'm interested in right now is the 6000. U.S. sailors and Marines that are about to arrive in Sydney for 4days on the 5th July and I'm sure they will not be giving a thought to all this political bullshit.

$250 000.00 ?????
Pocket change.

He'll probably make that much money in just a month, on the right-wing taking head tour.

I'm sure the speaker's fee's will more than cover the fine.

And maybe OJ Simpson can give him some pointers for his book deal; maybe he could call it "If I Did It: Part Two."

Presumably the fine will get paid by the $5M defense fund that Fred Thompson was working on for him?

Bush doesn't see obstruction of justice as that serious an issue especially for his own chronies. It's totally predictable.

He'll also pardon Libby eventually to make sure Libby doesn't squeal.

Squeal on whom? We know who let the cat out of the bag on Plame. It was Armitage. And Fitzgerald knew that when he questioned Libby. So why ask the question if you know the answer? More importantly, if it was a crime reveal Plame's identity, why was Armitage not charged? Helpful hint: It wasn't against the law to do so. There was never a violation of the law that was being investigated, because Plame did not fit the criteria called for by the statute. I have to agree that Bush will probably pardon Libby just before he leaves office.

Libby was convicted of that crime by a jury and the President's commutation doesn't dispute the conviction itself. What then was Libby lying to the FBI and obstructing juctice about?

But maybe you're right. Maybe Libby was so used to lying and obstructing justice that he just couldn't stop himself when there was nothing to lie or obstruct justice about. LOL.

heres a thought

maybe he was following the orders of Darth Cheney

Food for fodder -- one of the US headlines today was that the White House has not ruled out a full pardon.

There are obvious distinctions between the two cases, as the Senator noted:

Clinton Draws Distinctions on Pardons

KEOKUK, Iowa (AP) - Democratic presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton drew a distinction between President Bush's decision to commute the sentence of White House aide I. Lewis ``Scooter'' Libby - which she has harshly criticized - and her husband's 140 pardons in his closing hours in office.

``I believe that presidential pardon authority is available to any president, and almost all presidents have exercised it,'' Clinton said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. ``This (the Libby decision) was clearly an effort to protect the White House. ... There isn't any doubt now, what we know is that Libby was carrying out the implicit or explicit wishes of the vice president, or maybe the president as well, in the further effort to stifle dissent.''

Libby, a former chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney, had been sentenced to 30 months in prison as well as two years' probation and a $250,000 fine for perjury in connection with the leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plane's name to reporters.

Just hours after a federal appeals court rejected Libby's appeal, Bush announced his decision to commute the prison term portion of the sentence, which he labeled excessive.

As she campaigns with her husband for Iowa's leadoff precinct caucuses, Clinton has joined other Democrats in ripping Bush's decision. In the interview, she said it was ``one more example'' of the Bush administration thinking ``it is above the rule of law.''

Her husband's pardons, issued in the closing hours of his presidency, were simply routine exercise in the use of the pardon power, and none were aimed at protecting the Clinton presidency or legacy, she said.

``This particular action by the president is one more piece of evidence in their ongoing disregard for the rule of law that they think they don't have to answer to,'' she said.
