Retaining The Ashes 2006/7

Looks as tho' Panesar will play in Perth, tho' no confirmation yet.

Good thing about a WACA Test is that we Brits can watch more of the match when we get up in the morning.

I wonder if the Northern Territory will ever host a test match...Alice springs to mind...

The full Monty, at last, on the JUB sports forum.:=D: 5 wickets, including a bemused Warney, on the opening day at the WACA. If only Monty had played in Adelaide...

Am tempted to stay up to watch the 2nd day's play over-night, but my boss says the UK economy will collapse if I, and many other English cricket fans, don't go to work tomorrow.

A difficult decision: the UK reduced to third world status, while we watch the likes of Flintoff and Pietersen hit the Aussies out of the match...:help:

tell your boss that he is a very un-australian for having that point of view

3rd Test, second day
Australia build after England stumble

Australia built a commanding position on the second day at the WACA extending their first-innings advantage of 29 to an imposing 148 with strong innings from Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting.

Stumps score at the WACA
Aust 244 & 1/119 (Ponting & Hayden 57 apiece)
Poms 215

Oz has the upper hand, I fear.

The Punter has passed 500 for the series.

My boss - her name is Sandra - was happy to see me at work today. The UK economy might be safe, but the Ashes look lost.:-({|=

The English team is going to be a lot harder to beat if they figure out how to put several good days of cricket together.

Oh Dear (well - for the Poms, anyway)...

I am watching the test right now (I bet greaves has given up in disgust) - and Australia are just about to go past 500 runs.
2 centuries already - The Aussies are bashing the ball all over the pitch - and Gilchrist is looking to have a shot at the fastest test Century ever. He's on 89 from 49 balls...

Not quite...

98 off 56 balls...

Still a great knock tho'...

*EDIT*
100 off 57 balls - 2nd fastest Century ever in the history of Test Cricket!

Go Gillie!!!

*EDIT* (again)
Australia declared. England need 557 to win.

*EDIT* (yet again)
England - No runs and one wicket down in the first over...
I think I'm going out to get a few beers...

To take Davis Cup parlance, going to be dead rubbers in Melbourne & Sydney. All over red rover.

The highest 4th innings total to win a test match - 418 - was achieved by the West Indies in Antigua in May 2003 v the Australians.

Sport is about breaking records; re-writing sporting history.

But I think that famous commentary quote:

"The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey."

is more apposite, as Australia certainly have England by the balls.

But, as the greatest English footballer of all time, Jimmy Greaves, once said:

"It's a funny old game.":D

The highest 4th innings total to win a test match - 418 - was achieved by the West Indies in Antigua in May 2003 v the Australians.

And the highest 4th innings total to win a test match the WACA is 342.

So, with England needing 557 to win, they only need to exceed the existing record for the ground by 62.9%, and the world record by 33.3%. Easy as! ..| :gogirl: :D

By the way, this looks like a good test match for setting records. Gilchrist's innings included these two:

Equal fastest half-century in an Ashes test, equalling Graham Thorpe from 1997. :=D:
Fastest century in an Ashes test, and second fastest in the history of Test Cricket. :=D: ..| :=D:

Importantly, the records are shared, with Enlgand also setting (or on track to set) new records:

Most expensive over in Ashes history (Panesar conceeded 24 runs)
Shortest period holding the Ashes  :help:

:D (!) :D (!) :D Go Aussies! :D (!) :D (!) :D

Well - after a shaky start, the Englishmen dug in and batted solidly - Cook in particular. His was a well deserved and steady if not spectacular century - but "steady" was what the England team needed, so all kudos to him. A very mature performance for a 21 Y/O.

Unfortunately (for the Poms, that is) it fell to Glenn McGrath to spoil the party shortly before the close of play, with 2 wickets down in the one over. Had England closed the day at only 3 wickets down, instead of 5, I'm sure their tails would have been quite well up and it would have been an interesting final days play.

As it stands, it looks very much as if the game has swung very strongly back towards the Ashes being regained by Australia tomorrow. Had McGrath not wreaked his late havoc, it could just have been a different story.

The tail will have to wag ridiculously hard for England to recover anything from this now.

I've stayed up all nite to watch England make a real fight of this match, only to see their good work undermined by 2 wickets in one over from Mcgrath in the last 15 minutes of the day.#-o

I'm a nervous wreck. But you have to say England still had a great day, especially when you consider how well the Aussies bowled and fielded.:=D: :=D: :=D:

292 still needed to win by England, and Pieterson and Flintoff still there.....|

I'll need the Freemantle doctor if these two can put England within touching distance of a win or draw tomorrow.

True - if the team could sustain that sort of effort over a longer period, then they would become a very tough team to beat.

That having been said, it should still be 3 - 0 to Australia by the end of tomorrow.

Alastair Cook is 22 on Christmas Day. Any topless photos around of him anywhere?
He is the first batsman to score 4 first class centuries before getting into a test side. A very good effort.

Bawling my eyes out here ..... SO PROUD!!! That's all I can say for now!
