not allegedly, there's a straight-up gay character... it's been over a decade since I've read the book, so I can't recall the name, but there was a homosexual doctor in Ender's Shadow. he had adopted a bunch of kids but lamented that his life still felt meaningless because none of the kids were his own biological children.

by the end of the series, he'd converted to straight and was married to a woman (and was depicted as happier as a result)

I don't recall the doctor as being gay. And he didn't adopt the kids, anyway, he basically manufactured them according to a genetic scheme to try to make super-kids who would help him control the world.

Well, Orson Scott Card is a fucking asscunt for being a homophobe, but I don't think that watching a movie based on one of his works can necessarily be construed as "hating gay people", especially if you think that the movie is good.

Orson Scott Card is a producer of the film. He will make money based on boxed office earnings. He'll also make more money from the increase in book sales, resulting from the movie.

Ender's Game is one of my favorite books, but Orson Scott Card is a bigot and I feel conflicted about that. My friends and I won't be paying to see the movie.

Let him reap the benefits. Money doesn't buy happiness, you know?

but if this movie is a box office flop, Hollywood won't give him even more money for the rights to the next books in the series (and as the books progress, his anti-gay agenda gets more and more obvious. by the "Ender's Shadow" book, the plot is basically all about how great it is to make babies; there's one gay character who's only introduced to lament about how he can never be happy in life because he can't have his own biological children, and as a result his life is forever meaningless -- though by the end, he's converted to straight and is much happier)

But it will take far more than gays behaving like little crybabies to make this film flop at the box office. And even if it does flop that alone doesn't necessarily mean they wont want to make more films in the series. And personally I would love to see the storyline you described get laughed down in theaters. Wouldn't you like to see gay and straight people alike publicly laughing at the absurdity of such a notion?

I do plan on watching the film, just to be able to get the info first hand and see if there is anything there worth all you people getting your panties in a bunch over. You see, I like to gather the facts before running off half-cocked to join the whinepool.

And I never said there was anything wrong with not liking homophobia, just that the gay community has an extreme tendency to over react when one or two members get their feathers ruffled. Then you get a mob scene as all those around jump on the bandwagon without understanding what it is they are attacking.

As I said, I would love to see any homophobic scenes in the film being publicly laughed down in the theaters, which is quite likely to happen more than viewers being rallied to the banner of homophobia. Wouldn't that be worth the $12 admission price?

You like to gather facts? Really? More like make things up and pass them off as facts like you've proven to do this ENTIRE thread.

It's not about whether there are homophobic scenes in the movie or not, it's about the money making an extremely homophobic person millions who is very likely to fund anti-gay organizations to prevent something that he's STRONGLY AGAINST which is gay marriage and any other gay rights. Go ahead and watch it though but you lose the right to bitch about any type of homophobia that comes your way because you support it but I know you will anyways because you like to complain. I'm still waiting for someone to clarify just who this alleged gay character in the book is. I re-read the entire series last year, and I don't recall any gay characters or any "conversion" to straight.

It's a grey area. I'm choosing not to see the film because I think it looks awful, but saying that people are 'supporting homophobia' by seeing it is quite extreme.

Has <this> article been posted yet? (Sorry if it has). I don't know how accurate these supposed sources are, but it's worth reading anyway.

But multiple sources from both inside and outside the companies that produced the “Ender’s Game” film – distributor Summit Entertainment, visual effects company Digital Domain and book-rights holder OddLot Entertainment – tell TheWrap that Card’s fee has already been paid through a decade-old deal that includes no backend.

And though Card takes a producing credit, he had zero say or creative input in the adaptation, according to all those involved with the movie who spoke with TheWrap about “Ender’s Game.” That stands in support of the idea that he’ll neither gain from its success, nor suffer from its failure.

I'm still waiting for someone to clarify just who this alleged gay character in the book is. I re-read the entire series last year, and I don't recall any gay characters or any "conversion" to straight.

I added it to my Kindle to reread when I get a chance I have a very distinct memory of being 16 and putting the book down in disgust at the homophobia, but I also haven't read it since it was first published in 1999.
